Stephen Amell Gets Brutally Honest About DCU Recasting, After 11 Years Playing Green Arrow

Stephen Amell has some strong feelings about James Gunn’s DC Universe recasting Green Arrow after playing Green Arrow from 2012 in the Arrowverse. With both the Arrowverse and the DCEU ending, a new DC Universe is in the works from Gunn and Peter Safran, the new co-CEOs for DC Studios. And as DC Studios craft their new franchise, the question of who will play the new crop of DC superheroes is becoming more persistent.

Amell was the founding star of the Arrowverse, starring on Arrow for eight seasons and helping flesh out The CW’s larger universe. During a recent stream on Whatnot, the Oliver Queen star spoke about looking toward the future of these properties and the day when his character will be played by someone else in future DC Universe projects. While he sees himself as “a custodian” for Green Arrow, he’s excited to see what new directions DC Studios will take the Emerald Archer, sharing the following:

I don’t know, man. I don’t know. Those guys, the DCEU, they need to decide if they think that they’re better than television or if they want to participate. Because I get mixed messages, which to me just signals that, I don’t know. You guys do your own thing. We did our thing. I wish everyone nothing but the best. I want nothing more than amazing movies, but right now, they need us a lot more than we need them.

I am a custodian for Oliver Queen, and [Grant Gustin] is a custodian for Barry Allen in the same way that… look, I don’t think anyone’s asking Tom Welling how he feels about who’s going to play the new Superman. Now, I get the proximity and stuff like that, but there will be another Oliver Queen. There will and it’ll be new and cool and exciting and however much the internet hates it is probably a direct indication as to how good it’s going to be.

You’ve got to remember that these people aren’t picked at random. Very, very smart people think long and hard about how they’re going to go about this, and I’m sure that whoever they pick, if in fact they do, maybe they don’t care about the character, I don’t know, will do an amazing job.

What Heroes Are Confirmed For James Gunn’s DC Universe?

While Gunn and Safran only presented half of their Chapter 1 projects in January, there are a number of DC heroes already confirmed for “Gods and Monsters.” On the movie side, Gunn is currently in the midst of casting Superman: Legacy, which will focus on a younger Man of Steel. The Caped Crusader is also getting rebooted as DC Studios are developing Batman: The Brave and The Bold, with The Flash movie director Andy Muschietti being eyed to helm it. Other heroes and teams that are confirmed for the DC Universe with solo films lined up include Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Swamp Thing, and The Authority.

For television, all exclusively produced on Max, DC Studios have several superhero shows in the works. Michael Jon Carter, a.k.a. Booster Gold, will be getting his own series, which will follow the 31st-century-based hero going back in time to make a name for himself. The Green Lanterns are also on their way, with Hal Jordan and John Stewart set to headline Lanterns, which will be a True Detective-inspired sci-fi series. While Wonder Woman’s place in the DC Universe has yet to be determined, there will be a prequel series named Paradise Lost, focusing on the early days of Themyscira, prior to Diana Prince’s birth.

As Gunn and Safran stressed earlier in 2023, there will be more DC Universe projects revealed at a later time, meaning more heroes are bound to get confirmed for the new franchise. Whether or not Green Arrow will be part of those plans remains to be seen, as they may save Oliver Queen for Chapter 2 at this point. Hopefully, more updates about the DC Universe will arrive sooner rather than later.
