Warning! This article contains spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.James Gunn reveals who had the final say on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘s Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 5 setup. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 completes the team’s trilogy, with Gunn now moving over to lead the new DC Universe and part of the franchise’s cast confirming that the film will be the last time as their MCU characters. While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is very much an ending for the beloved team, it is also a beginning, as the film contains a clue as to what will happen with the Guardians during the MCU’s Phase 5. Gunn now confirms who was responsible for the tease.
On Twitter, Gunn was asked if he had chosen the new Guardians of the Galaxy team shown at the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 or if it had been Marvel. The director confirmed he was the one responsible for choosing the new team.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ended with the team the MCU has followed for almost a decade disbanding after beating the evil High Evolutionary. Most members went their own separate ways, with Rocket Raccoon being named the Guardians’ new captain and assembling a team, setting up the next iteration of the Guardians for the MCU’s future.
Where Will The New Guardians Of The Galaxy Team Show Up Next?
While the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 end-credits scenes were followed by a title card that said “The Legendary Star-Lord Will Return,” the film’s mid-credits scene set up a brand-new iteration of Marvel’s cosmic team without Chris Pratt’s character. There is a possibility that Peter Quill will rejoin the Guardians — although not as their captain — after spending some time on Earth getting to know his grandfather.
Even if the movie only confirmed Star-Lord’s return in the future, its mid-credits scene set up a new Guardians of the Galaxy team that should appear again, with or without Quill. Led by Rocket, the new iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy features Groot, Kraglin, Adam Warlock, Cosmo the Spacedog, and the young Phyla. The team could eventually add Quill or any of the old members who did not die in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.
Gunn is not coming back for a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4, and even though the filmmaker has said that he would like to see a new director continue the franchise, it is likely that Marvel will want to hold off on doing that for some time, as it will be hard to follow the excellent trilogy finale that is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The new Guardians of the Galaxy team led by Rocket could appear next in one of the upcoming Avengers movies — The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars — to save not only the galaxy but the whole multiverse.
