‘Untapped European destination’ is a ‘low-cost’ summer holiday option with beach | Travel News | Travel

With summer fast approaching, many Britons are eager to book a holiday. But with prices soaring for popular destinations such as Spain, Portugal and Greece, it can be hard to find an affordable option.

However, thinking outside the box could help Britons secure a bargain break. A gorgeous city in Eastern Europe is easily reached on budget airlines and has a beach just half an hour from the city centre.

Jason King, chief customer officer at Sainsbury’s Bank, told Express.co.uk: “Britons are looking for more affordable destinations to travel to this summer.

“With its beaches close by, rich culture and vibrant nightlife, we’ve found that Riga, Latvia is now one of the top destinations couples are seeking to visit. It offers great value for money.”

The capital of Latvia, Riga, could be an affordable choice for Britons looking to save on a holiday this summer.

Tourists could wander the streets of the city’s Old Town, try local treats and marvel at the unique architecture.

Saffron, a 27-year-old tourist from London, travelled to Riga for a mini-break in June with her friend.

She told Express.co.uk: “The only reason we chose Riga originally was because of the cheap flights.

“However, we loved it and thought the buildings were really beautiful with lots of architecture to look at.

“We were really surprised by the beach that was just 20 minutes by train from the city centre. It was so pretty.”

Saffron visited Jurmala, a resort city on the Gulf of Riga, with golden sand. The hotspot was once a popular resort town used by Soviet officials.

Another tourist, Ellie Parrott, travelled to Riga with her boyfriend after looking for a cheap break.

She said: “I’ve travelled extensively but in recent years, have looked at low-cost locations that no one else is flocking to in light of the rising cost of living. I’ve recently visited untapped European destinations including Riga with my partner. It’s ideal for budget travellers as you don’t need to spend a lot of money whilst there.”

In July, tourists can get direct return flights to Riga for under £150 from London, Newcastle and Bristol.

All prices were found on Skyscanner and correct at the time of writing.
