Hannah Waddingham certainly had an interesting comparison for the upcoming Ted Lasso revival. Ted Lasso was the first true breakout hit for AppleTV+, where it ran for three seasons from 2020 to 2023 and concluded with what was mapped out as a three-season story. Waddingham played Rebecca Welton, the owner of the AFC Richmond Football Club, in the series. Waddingham won the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for Season 1 of the series and is one of the cast members confirmed to return for Season 4.
At the premiere for The Smurfs, Waddingham spoke with Variety about returning for Ted Lasso Season 4. “I can’t wait to get involved with that and put my penneth in and go shopping for her looks,” Waddingham said regarding returning to the beloved series. She also compared bringing the series back after they originally only intended to air three seasons to exhuming a dead dog, but she doesn’t see it as a bad thing. Waddingham said:
“It feels like it was the most beautiful, beloved dog that was buried, and now we’ve exhumed it, and I am here for it. I was hankering and hankering and hankering and hankering to see where Rebecca had gone, where she was going to. She’s my girl. She’s in my bloodstream, so I’m thrilled that it’s been exhumed.”

Is ‘Ted Lasso’s Return Something To Believe In?
While having appeared in a wide variety of series, from Game of Thrones to Krypton, Waddingham’s role in Ted Lasso made up a superstar and since then, she has been featured in several high-profile projects. She appeared in Hocus Pocus 2, The Fall Guy, and The Garfield Movie. 2025 has been a busy year for Waddingham as she was in the two big Memorial Day weekend films, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning and Lilo & Stitch, as Admiral Neely and the Grand Council Woman, respectively. She will next be heard in The Smurfs, opening in theaters on Jul. 18, 2025.
Ted Lasso Season 4 is in the early stages of development. Currently, all that is known about the series is that it will revolve around Ted Lasso (Jason Sudekis) teaching an all-women’s soccer team. Sudekis and Waddingham are signed on to return, as are Brett Goldstein, Jeremy Swift, and Nick Mohammed. No word has been released on when the series will begin shooting, but the scripts are currently being written.
Many fans are undoubtedly excited about the return of Ted Lasso, as the series gained critical acclaim and, for many, was the series audiences needed during the early months of the pandemic. Others, though, are more skeptical, as some see the series’ return as a ploy by Apple TV+ to exploit one of their most popular series after the creators had committed to having the series run for only three seasons. Some believe the series is returning to make up for the controversial Season 3, whose final episode was widely criticized by fans for being rushed. As with The Bear, Ted Lasso became a victim of its own success, and there is doubt whether the series can reclaim its former glory. However, if Ted Lasso taught fans anything, it is that there is always hope.
