Katie Maloney & Jack Osbourne Talk Osbournes Reality Show

Here’s a reality TV crossover we didn’t see coming. Vanderpump Rules alum Katie Maloney recently interviewed Jack Osbourne for her Disrespectfully podcast. The two chatted about their experiences on reality TV, and he revealed the surprising way that MTV came up with the idea of The Osbournes.

Jack revealed how The Osbournes came to MTV

A first-of-its-kind reality show, The Osbournes aired on MTV for four seasons between 2002 and 2005. The series is now streaming on Prime Video, and Katie told Jack how she had been binge-watching it recently.

When asked about how the show came about, Jack revealed that it all started with an episode of another throwback reality show — MTV Cribs.

“It was like a collective idea,” Jack recalled. “MTV did an MTV Cribs with the family. Kelly [Osbourne] and I were in the episode, and it did really well for them.”

The episode of Cribs did so well that the producers called the family back asking for part two. Jack said that his dad didn’t want to participate that time, so the episode wound up just being Jack and Kelly.

When the family’s second episode of Cribs did just as well as the first one, the producers knew they had something special and wanted to do something with the family. Since MTV was at the center of pop culture at that time, they jumped at the opportunity and sat down for a meeting.

He explained, “We sat at a dinner. All of us just spitballed this idea, and it was simple like, ‘Why don’t we do The Real World, but in our house?’”

With the idea in place, the family let the cameras capture their day-to-day lives. Jack admitted that he and his dad were apprehensive about reality TV. Jack, then 15, quickly changed his mind once he realized his MTV paychecks could buy him a car. His dad had a similar motivation to get him off the fence.

Jack confessed, “It just ended up like, ‘Well, it’s going to be a good promotion because you’ve got an album coming out.’”

The Osbournes is streaming on Prime Video.
