A Clive Owen-led period drama with a 92% Rotten Tomatoes score is enjoying a streaming resurgence. Clive Owen’s best movies and shows cover a wide range of genres, from the espionage of The Bourne Identity to the neo-noir miniseries Monsieur Spade.
For his performance in the 2004 romantic drama film Closer, Owen won a Golden Globe and a BAFTA Award, along with receiving an Academy Award nomination. The 2012 television film Hemingway & Gellhorn led to further awards recognition, with Owen receiving an Emmy nomination for his portrayal of Ernest Hemingway.
He has more recently starred in season 3 of American Crime Story, where he played President Bill Clinton, Hulu’s psychological mystery thriller series A Murder at the End of the World, and as the leader of an eco-terrorist group in the 2025 action thriller film Cleaner. However, it is one of Owen’s overlooked projects from eight years ago that is seeing a streaming resurgence.

The series aired for two seasons on Cinemax. Even though the season 2 finale was released in December 2015, Cinemax did not announce the cancellation of the Steven Soderbergh-directed show until 2017.
According to FlixPatrol as of August 4, The Knick is in the tenth spot on HBO Max’s streaming charts. Some of the shows ahead of The Knick are in the midst of releasing new episodes, including And Just Like That… and The Gilded Age, which have the respective number one and number three spots.
Our Take On The Knick’s Streaming Resurgence
The Knick‘s recent streaming success is indicative of the show’s high quality being recognized years later. After the recent popularity of the intense medical drama The Pitt, The Knick is a perfect follow-up show with a similar level of intensity, albeit in a dramatically different time period, that can fill the void while the wait for The Pitt season 2 continues.
Many of Steven Soderbergh’s movies continue to be widely celebrated and rewatched, but his outstanding work on The Knick has been criminally overlooked, as has Owen’s performance as Dr. Thackery, which is among the best in his career. Now, new audiences are thankfully discovering the show for the first time.
