The world’s longest train journey that runs for 5,772 miles through Russia | Travel News | Travel

Spanning thousands of miles and crossing vast, varied landscapes, the Trans-Siberian Railway remains the world’s longest continuous train journey, a legendary route that has captivated travellers for over a century.

Running for more than 9,200 kilometres, the railway links Moscow in European Russia to Vladivostok on the Pacific coast, taking passengers across eight time zones in a single trip. Depending on the route, travellers can even connect through Mongolia and China, adding extra countries and cultural stops to the journey.

Completed in the early 20th century, the Trans-Siberian was an engineering marvel of its time and is still one of the most remarkable feats of rail construction ever achieved.

Today, it takes around seven days to travel the entire length without stopping, though most tourists choose to break up the trip to explore its many highlights.

The scenery is one of the biggest draws. From the rolling hills and forests of western Russia to the remote wilderness of Siberia, every leg offers a glimpse into parts of the world few ever see.

Highlights include Lake Baikal, the deepest freshwater lake on Earth, and the sweeping steppes of Mongolia for those taking the Trans-Mongolian branch.

The train itself is a slice of old-world travel. While modern carriages offer comfort and amenities, much of the charm lies in the slow pace, communal dining cars, and the camaraderie that builds among passengers over long distances.

The mix of locals, adventurers, and rail enthusiasts creates an atmosphere unlike any other journey.

In recent years, the Trans-Siberian has gained renewed popularity among global travellers seeking “slow travel” experiences.

Unlike air travel, the railway offers time to savour the shifting landscapes and absorb the cultural nuances along the way.
