The Beekeeper proved to be one of the most popular action thrillers in Jason Statham’s arsenal. And now, director Timo Tjahjanto has offered the update fans have been waiting for. Speaking exclusively with MovieWeb’s George Edelman, the filmmaker behind such action movie delights as The Night Comes for Us and The Shadow Strays has revealed that production is well underway and teased what’s to come in the highly anticipated sequel.
“I was, literally two days ago, I was in London scouting for locations [for Beekeeper 2], and now I’m here in LA, but I love…I can’t wait, to be honest, because, you know, Beekeeper is obviously one of those movies where it sort of walked the fine line … something absurd about it in a great way, right? Like, I think that’s what I that’s what I’m drawn to, because I love this absurdist world of Beekeeper and secret agents and all that stuff, you know? But like, also, there’s something that is really earnest in its sense, where it can be really violent, it can be suddenly very gritty.”
Tjahjanto’s next foray into action is another sequel, Nobody 2 with Bob Odenkirk, and the filmmaker went on to compare the two actors and action stars and how both follow-ups center on aging men who continue to fight despite how “beaten down they are.”
“And as most like Jason’s films that you know, I love it, because here we are telling the story of a man like, like, like Bob himself, you know, like Statham here right now, he’s playing a character who acknowledged that he’s aging, you know. And I think I’m definitely drawn into characters who are still going, regardless of, you know, how sort of, like, beaten down they are, you know.”
‘The Beekeeper’ Proved to Be a Huge Hit for Jason Statham
Directed by David Ayer from a script written by Kurt Wimmer, The Beekeeper stars Jason Statham alongside Emmy Raver-Lampman, Josh Hutcherson, Bobby Naderi, Minnie Driver, Phylicia Rashad, and Jeremy Irons. Hitting theaters and streaming with a bang last year, the first The Beekeeper finds The Stath leading the way as the mysterious Adam Clay, a lowly beekeeper who reveals he is none other than a retired black ops assassin from an organization known as “Beekeepers,” who embarks on a quest for revenge after his only friend is murdered.
The action thriller was a huge success for the action star, grossing $152.7 million at the worldwide box office and scoring 71% from critics and 92% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. While it took a lot longer than it should have, a sequel has now been officially confirmed, with Timo Tjahjanto taking over from Ayer, with Amazon MGM Studios having now acquired the rights.
As for Nobody 2, Bob Odenkirk returns as former assassin Hutch Mansell and discovers that, sometimes, the most dangerous place for a dad is a family vacation. Nobody 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on August 15, 2025.
