Star Wars Rey Sequel Details Revealed by Kathleen Kennedy

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy has revealed and confirmed further details regarding the recently announced Star Wars sequel that will follow the Disney sequel character, Rey. Speaking with Empire Magazine, Kennedy confirmed the timeline of the Rey follow-up, as well as revealing how it will approach the creation of a new Jedi order.

“What we’re exploring is the evolution of the Jedi. We’re moving 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker. The First Order has fallen, the Jedi are in chaos – there’s even a question of how many exist anymore – and Rey’s building the New Jedi Order, based on the text that she was given and that Luke imparted on her.”

The Star Wars project is clearly being planned as a direct sequel to the divisive Disney trilogy, with the Rey-centered movie once again following Daisy Ridley as she continues to carve out her place in the galaxy, learn from the lessons bestowed on her by Jedi Master Luke Skywalker, and balance the past with the future as she rebuilds the Jedi after so many years.

The Star Wars Rey sequel is all set to be directed by Academy Award-winning journalist and filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Ms. Marvel), from a script written by Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders, Eastern Promises). The project was announced during the recent Star Wars Celebration, with Kennedy revealing that the Rey movie will find the character asking herself “‘Who are the Jedi? What are they doing? What’s the state of the galaxy?’”

Kathleen Kennedy Wants to ‘Eventize’ the Star Wars Franchise

A major concern surrounding the Star Wars franchise since Disney took over is the oversaturation and sheer abundance of projects on both the big and small screens. Well, Kathleen Kennedy is hoping to rectify this, with the Lucasfilm boss likening their new approach to that of James Bond. “I’ve often brought up Bond,” Kennedy said recently. “That’s every three or four years and there wasn’t this pressure to feel like you had to have a movie every year. I feel that was very important to Star Wars. We have to eventize this.”

It is currently unclear with how this approach will be carried out considering how many projects were announced at Star Wars Celebration 2023. Alongside the Rey sequel starring Daisy Ridley, a Mandoverse wrap-up movie helmed by Dave Filoni was also confirmed, as well as a new movie from Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director James Mangold about the first Jedi and a currently untitled Star Wars movie set to be directed by Thor: Ragnarok’s Taika Waititi.

And this is without mentioning all the mysterious, unspecified projects such as the planned trilogy from Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson and a movie from Stranger Things and Deadpool 3 filmmaker Shawn Levy.

The small screen meanwhile will see the debut of even more projects set in a galaxy far, far away including Ahsoka, Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, Star Wars: The Bad Batch, and The Acolyte, all of which are due to land on Disney+.
