Parallax, the horrifying, evil form of Green Lantern is coming back, and he’s out for blood. Details from DC’s September solicitations hint that one Justice League member is in serious danger from Hal Jordan’s powerful alter ego.
With the latest batch of solicitations out, fans are getting a look at what to expect from DC Comics in September. With Knight Terrors firmly behind it, the DCU is getting back to normal. All the books that took a break for the two-month event are coming back, including Joshua Williamson and Sean Izaakse’s Green Arrow. The solicitation for Green Arrow #4 makes it sound like the nightmares are just getting started for Oliver Queen.
Years ago, Oliver Queen died and was resurrected by his good ol’ buddy Hal Jordan. But it wasn’t really Hal, it was Parallax. And did no one think that would come with a cost?! Now Parallax has returned to collect!
Meanwhile, Arsenal and Black Canary’s search for Oliver Queen leads them to a long-lost Green Arrow family member…who isn’t so happy to be found!
The solicitation confirms that Green Lantern’s dark Parallax self is returning to antagonize Green Arrow, collecting on the debt he feels he’s owed after resurrecting Oliver. The solicitation for Green Arrow #4 featured a work-in-progress version of the comic’s cover by Izaakse. The cover shows Oliver, holding his bow with an arrow at the ready as Parallax looms over the Emerald Archer. Though it isn’t clear how Parallax has returned, he looks just as sinister as he did during his reign of terror.
Green Lantern’s Parallax Form is Coming for Green Arrow
Fans of Green Arrow may recall that the hero died in a climactic storyline that began in Green Arrow #100. Oliver infiltrated an eco-terrorist group to stop Metropolis from being bombed, an event that led to him sacrificing his life to save the city. Though Oliver had moved to the great beyond, he was brought back to life by his pal, Hal Jordan. Though Jordan was still the villainous Parallax at the time, he took the time to resurrect his friend before Jordan sacrificed his life in The Final Night.
At the time of Oliver’s resurrection, it wasn’t known that Parallax was actually the result of Jordan being possessed by a fear entity of the same name (that retcon wouldn’t be established until years later in Green Lantern: Rebirth). At the time, it seemed that bringing Oliver back to life was simply one final act of goodness before Hal Jordan got himself killed by reigniting the sun. Now it’s known that almost everything in that time was a result of Hal being possessed. If Oliver is indeed fighting the Parallax and it’s not a trick, does this mean Parallax had a long-term plan for Green Arrow?
Parallax is Out to Get Green Arrow
When Hal Jordan was Parallax, he had godlike strength and had almost complete mastery over the universe, so it seems like there’s very little he could want from Queen. However, Oliver is currently being transported all over time and space, manipulated by some unknown force. Parallax’s powers could explain how Green Arrow is jumping around to so many strange places. Is it possible that Parallax is the one that’s been manipulating Green Arrow from behind the scenes? Or is it all part of some much bigger plot from an even more sinister being? Fans will have to see for themselves what awaits Oliver when he faces off against Green Lantern’s Parallax form in Green Arrow #4, on sale September 19th.
