Nick Fury’s Absence From Civil War & Endgame Confuses Samuel L. Jackson

Samuel L. Jackson shares his confusion about Nick Fury being left out of Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Endgame. Phase 5 is getting ready to bring back one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s biggest characters as Fury will be headlining the Secret Invasion series on Disney+. Based on the iconic storyline of the same name, the spy-thrilling series will see Fury trying to prevent a legion of Skrulls from invading the planet.

The last time MCU fans saw Fury was when he was on his space mission, but prior to that reveal, many had wondered why the former S.H.I.E.L.D. director was left out from crucial films such as Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Endgame. It turns out that Jackson himself was just as confused about not having any major roles to play in those storylines outside his brief appearance in Avengers: Endgame. In an interview with Empire Magazine, the MCU actor talked about how he felt there were definitely a moment or two that Fury could have had in Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Endgame.

I was trying to figure out where I was during Civil War, when the kids were fighting and I wasn’t there to say, ‘Everybody go to your room.’ Where was I during Endgame? It’s harder for me not to be there, than be there.

Should Nick Fury Have Been In Civil War & Endgame?

While Jackson makes a valid point, it is also worth looking into the issue a bit deeper if Fury really should have been in Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Endgame. With both of those installments, Marvel Studios dealt with massively packed casts, which is definitely not an easy task, especially with Avengers: Endgame. There were already a lot of characters that the stories had to service, which could have caused an issue in making room for Fury, even for just a scene or two.

Even if Jackson had filmed some scenes for either movie, it’s possible they could have easily gotten cut from the final versions and just become bonus material on the Blu-Ray/DVD sets. Avengers: Endgame is probably the trickiest film out of the two in terms of getting Fury a larger storyline. The last Avengers film was essentially the ultimate battle, and throwing Fury into the massive war would have felt like a major error on Marvel Studios’ part. Outside of appearing at Tony Stark’s funeral, there wouldn’t really have been an organic way to get Fury a meatier arc.

Nevertheless, the MCU is now making up for Fury’s absence through Secret Invasion, which will not only give Jackson a major storyline but a chance to flesh out his long-time Marvel character. Jackson will also be seen later this year in The Marvels, so 2023 is definitely not Fury-less. Hopefully, after being massively absent in Captain America: Civil War and Avengers: Endgame, there will be more to look forward to for Fury after 2023.
