Seven years since her last acting job, Emma Watson explains her acting hiatus in a new interview. Watson’s last role came in Greta Gerwig’s 2019 adaptation of Little Women, which wrapped production in December 2018. Since then, the most notable appearances of the actress best known for playing Hermoine Granger in the Harry Potter movies were in the Harry Potter reunion and a charity pickleball tournament TV special.
The interview from Hollywood Authentic has Watson talk about how she may be the happiest and healthiest she’s ever been, watching movies and being a part of the film community again at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, and how pickleball has become a new obsession. She also explains what she does and does not miss about the acting profession, saying:
“[A] bigger component than the actual job itself is the promotion and selling of that piece of work, this piece of art. The balance of that can get quite thrown off. I think I’ll be honest and straight-forward, and say: I do not miss selling things. I found that to be quite soul-destroying. But I do very much miss using my skill-set, and I very much miss the art.”
Watson added that working on a scene provides “such an intense form of meditation,” but she found there was so little of it. At the same time, there was pressure in working on these projects, which she does not miss.
What Has Emma Watson Been Doing Since She Last Acted?
Watson says that she has been keeping herself active during her acting hiatus. In addition to the trip to Cannes and perfecting her pickleball game, she reveals that she’s been working on something “that I’ve never done before,” but does not elaborate on what that may be.

The interviewer also asked if she would ever consider doing something behind the camera, to which Watson responded, “Yes, I think I’d consider everything.” However, Watson offered no more details on that, instead expounding on her philosophy of having a solid foundation for your life.
The article does not include any hints as to if or when Watson may end her acting hiatus. At this time, Watson does not have any projects lined up.
Our Take On Emma Watson’s Acting Hiatus
I was a bit surprised reading the interview and realized that Watson has not acted since Little Women. While she’ll always first and foremost be known for Harry Potter, Watson has a number of notable performances outside the wizarding world, including her role as Meg March in Gerwig’s Little Women, The Perks of Being a Wall Flower, Noah, and more.
Watson has shown herself to be a talented actress, so I hope to one day see her starring in a movie again. However, if she finds fulfillment elsewhere and decides that after being in the spotlight from age 11 to 29 was enough, then all the best to her. We’ll always have Harry Potter and her other roles to enjoy.
