One of Cameron Diaz‘s forgotten R-rated flops is making an unexpected comeback on free streaming. Diaz recently made her long-awaited return to acting with Netflix’s very aptly titled Back in Action earlier this year (which also starred Jamie Foxx). But, during the 00s and 2010s, Cameron Diaz was one of the most in-demand actresses around. This, of course, led to roles in some of her best movies, including Charlie’s Angels, The Mask, Vanilla Sky, There’s Something About Mary, Shrek, and many more. But among the roaring hits, Diaz also starred in an R-rated critical flop that audiences have gone on to describe as “raunchy” and “completely unhinged.” 14 years after it was released, that R-rated flop is finding new love on free streaming.
Bad Teacher is back for the new semester on the free streaming service, Pluto TV. With the film’s arrival on free streaming, a new lecture hall’s worth of viewers have tuned in to see one of Diaz’s more divisive movies. The film is currently the ninth most popular movie on the free streaming platform. Bad Teacher opened in theaters in 2011 and was a very divisive hit with critics and audiences. The film was a financial success, as it grossed just over $216 million worldwide. However, neither audiences nor critics could agree on whether it was a good film. Bad Teacher holds a weak Rotten Tomatoes score of 46%, with an even more divisive audience score of 36%.
The film stars Cameron Diaz as Elizabeth, a bad teacher (if the title didn’t give it away) who is desperate to marry rich and quit her job. But, after her sugar daddy leaves her, she eyes a new target, the surprisingly rich new substitute teacher, Scott (Justin Timberlake). The official synopsis reads:
“For most, teaching is an honorable profession — except for Elizabeth (Cameron Diaz). The foul-mouthed, boozy woman can’t wait to marry a rich man and quit her job, but she has to rethink her plans when her sugar daddy dumps her. Then Scott Delacorte (Justin Timberlake), a substitute teacher who’s cute and rich, arrives. Elizabeth can’t wait to sink her teeth into a new meal ticket, but she faces stiff competition from Amy (Lucy Punch), a popular and perky colleague.”
What Next for Cameron Diaz?
As the title of her latest Netflix movie suggested, Cameron Diaz is officially back in action. Following Annie in 2014 (which, coincidentally, also starred Jamie Foxx), Diaz took an 11-year break from acting to spend time with her family. But, she’s now back in front of the camera (or, at least, in the recording booth) for her next film.
Up next, Cameron Diaz will return as one of her best characters, Princess Fiona, in the upcoming Shrek 5. The first look at the new sequel was slated by fans for messing with the film’s art style. But, there’s still something to look forward to, as Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy are also returning for the new film, along with Zendaya as Shrek and Fiona’s daughter, Felicia. Shrek 5 is currently slated to release in 2027.
