Gen V Reveals The Deep Vs. Queen Maeve Happened Before The Boys Even Started

Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Gen V season 2, episode 4, “Bags”.After waiting six years for two of The Boys‘ most powerful supes to do battle, it seems like the duo already fought several years before the series started, according to Gen V. The spinoff show continued its great form as Godolkin University looks as corrupt as ever, with “Bags” revealing the consequences of Jordan’s speech in Gen V season 2, episode 3.

As punishment, they were forced to face off against their partner, Marie, in front of a sold-out arena, with Cipher making it clear that Marie was to be the winner. The event went in an unexpected direction, as it revealed more about Cipher’s powers and his potential interest in Gen V‘s Project Odessa, but the fight also provided another fascinating revelation.

As part of the promotion for this showdown, Vought reminded viewers of some of Godolkin’s classic showdowns, explaining that students regularly did combat to determine who the number one student is. In the process, Gen V confirmed that two former Seven teammates clashed during their university days in a match-up that I’ve been craving since The Boys began.

Queen Maeve Vs. The Deep Happened While The Pair Were At Godolkin

While Gen V made it clear in season 1 that both Queen Maeve and The Deep were Godolkin University alumni, the spinoff kept the fact that they did combat quiet, until now. Given that the two spent plenty of time in the Seven together, it’s no surprise they have quite the checkered past, but the fact that they previously fought is surprising.

Throughout the buildup to Marie and Jordan’s big confrontation, Vought platformed some of the university’s notable former bouts, which included Blindspot vs. Eagle the Archer and, of course, Queen Maeve vs. The Deep. Who won this fight or how it even came about remains unclear, but it seems like a massive deal since they both ended up on the Seven.

During her prime, Queen Maeve had some of the most useful powers in The Boys universe and was easily one of the strongest characters, meaning this should have been a mismatch if they were allowed to fight legitimately. However, given Godolkin tampered with Marie and Jordan’s scarp, there’s no telling who actually won this highly anticipated contest.

The Deep & Queen Maeve’s Fight Would Be Completely Different If They Crossed Paths In The Present Day

Just like in Gen V season 2, Godolkin probably allowed Maeve and The Deep to go at each other without holding back, but the winner was probably determined by who they saw as the bigger star between them, which is surely Queen Maeve, considering how often Vought overlooked The Deep. Interestingly, a fight in the present day would look a lot different.

Had the fight taken place when they were both on the Seven, Maeve would have wiped the floor with The Deep, as she’s not only more powerful, but also more combat-experienced. It would take a miracle to survive Maeve one-on-one, but he’d fare much better currently, given that Maeve lost her powers while fighting Soldier Boy.

Therefore, if Maeve returns to take on Homelander’s supe army in The Boys final season, she’d have an extremely tough time dealing with The Deep without her enhanced abilities.

Whether we will get this rematch set up by Gen V is yet to be seen, but with a Maeve appearance likely in season 5, it would be great to see these opposite characters do battle, especially since Maeve changed her morals and went against Vought, whereas The Deep loyally serves them, no matter how violent he has to get.
