L.A. City Hall evacuated after vehicle crashes near steps

A vehicle crashed near the steps of Los Angeles City Hall around 4:08 p.m. on Friday, prompting an evacuation of the building and road closures in the area, according to authorities.

The driver remained in his car during a nearly two-hour standoff with police, until he voluntarily emerged shortly before 6 p.m. and was taken into custody. A crisis team with the Los Angeles Police Department spoke with the driver by phone before he walked to First and Spring streets, where he was handcuffed by officers, according to KTLA.

Helicopter footage captured by the station showed Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics assessing the man for injuries as he sat on the curb with his hands cuffed behind his back.

Surrounding streets and freeway off-ramps are closed as officers respond to the incident, according to an LAPD spokesperson.

It is unclear whether the crash was intentional, police said.

Helicopter footage appeared to show there were two posters on the car’s dashboard and an oxygen tank in the passenger seat. The posters appeared to have the written messages, “Don’t want to hurt no body,” and “I need ur help D. Trump U.S. Vet.”

“I’ve been briefed on the ongoing incident outside of City Hall, which is currently being evacuated out of an abundance of caution,” L.A. Mayor Karen Bass wrote in a post on X. “I want to thank all first responders who are at the scene — my office will continue to monitor the situation.”

This is a developing story and will be updated.
