Shep Rose was recently in Scotland, describing it as an absolute dream. The Southern Charm personality was swept away first by the gorgeous Old Town of St. Andrews and its spectacular golf course and then by the genuinely kind Scottish people.

Shep Rose said that he was still on cloud nine after a trip to Scotland and that he would not mind contributing a few words of thought on how he felt about the whole experience. The reality star went on his personal account to marvel at some {op=’absolute dream few days’} spent in St. Andrews with the Old Course being somewhat of a draw. Rose says the magic of the town goes way beyond the golf fairways. It’s ranked highly among his favorite places he has ever been to, literally calling it “a magical place really.” The magic, of course, comes from the people. In a heartfelt tribute, he maintained that you would find it hard: “to find any kinder, warmer, genuine, funnier, and less pretentious people on earth.” He admired their pace of life, how they refused to be caught up in frivolities, and their generosity with spirit. This warmth, coming through almost like back home, made the whole experience reminiscent of a familiar great southeastern town, an experience Rose very much relates to.

It was also a full-circle moment for an avid golfer. Getting to play the one and only course that he and his grandfather would watch on TV in the summer time when he was just a wee lad growing up in Linville had led to some major sentimental overspill. “Ok. I think I’m overdoing it. Sorry,” he added. That wasn’t even the end of all the special moments. Rose gave a shout-out to surfing legend Kelly Slater and recounted how he met him: “He could not have been nicer to this fanboy.” Rose was referring to a prior meeting in which he had competed with Slater in a less friendly manner and “edged” the much displeased winner. “They say don’t meet your heroes. But they aren’t talking about him,” said Rose. The two found another connection through the wellness center Rythmia. He closed his lengthy post by thanking his friends, Annabelle Bond and Ken Hitchner, for connecting him to the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation and Alfred Dunhill Links Championship by saying, “I shall return! I’d be a fool not to.”

There were many comments made, some expressing a liking for Scotland. Another commenter who had been there in March mentioned again how St. Andrews was “fabulous” and wished there was a second time. One Scot threw his two cents in: “Fucking love this…you’ll not meet a better bunch than us.[heart emoji].” Another commentator found solace in Rose’s observations: “We got engaged in Scotland. You’re so right about the people; they’re wonderful, and you can see how their influence is reflected in the culture of the southeastern U.S., especially in our mountain towns.” The thoughtful answer tells one that the cultural threads tying Scotland to the American South are still very real and felt by walkers on these trails.

Another individual stated that Rose’s portrayal was “super accurate” and described the whole experience as “magical, truly magical.” The theme of a collectively experienced, almost spiritual connection to the place was, in turn, echoed by many. One claimed it to be their “most favorite place in the world,” while another shared in Rose’s perfect day on the town’s iconic “The Bridge” with: “The Bridge photo, a bag of OC merch, a few pints. Done and done.” The post even opened up a few cheeky international territory disputes: “Better than Fields Ranch? 😂😂🙌🙌”—which was a witty nod of appreciation to Rose’s own golfing ventures.

From the deeply emotional linking of memories related to the grandfather, to savouring the unexpected bonding with a legendary sportsman, Shep Rose’s trip to Scotland was not merely just a holiday. It bore itself as a very personal journey reinforcing his love of golf while exploring a culture and a people he now holds in reverence. The enthusiastic promise of returning loudly suggests that this is far from the last time this home-away-from-home will be found in St. Andrews. His French Bulldog was surely missed during his travels.
