The Woman in Cabin 10 author Ruth Ware has shared which book she would like to see adapted next. Ware’s 2016 thriller novel was adapted into a new movie starring Keira Knightley. 2025’s The Woman in Cabin 10 debuted on Netflix on October 10 and is now the streamer’s No. 1 most-watched movie of the day in the United States.
In an interview with ScreenRant’s Liam Crowley, Ware was asked which of her novels she would like to be adapted next. While she shared that she thought that some of her books were “unfilmable” and that a movie adapting The Woman in Cabin 10‘s sequel The Woman in Suite 11 would be “incredible,” she ultimately chose an entirely different novel.
The title that she singled out for a movie adaptation was 2022’s The It Girl, which follows Hannah, a woman whose world is turned upside-down when she is presented with evidence that the person who went to prison for murdering her beloved Oxford classmate April a decade before may have actually been innocent.
While she did not share specifics about why she wants the novel to be adapted, beyond the fact that it doesn’t contain the type of twist or reveal that wouldn’t work onscreen, she did share that its Oxford setting could make it a strong choice because “I feel like we’ve got a bit of a vogue going on” with that setting.
It seems like Ruth Ware is directly referencing 2025’s My Oxford Year, a Netflix romance which stars Sofia Carson and Corey Mylchreest. The Oxford-set movie debuted on the streamer on August 1 and held a place on their chart of the most-watched English-language movies for four consecutive weeks, hitting No. 1 during its second week.
My Oxford Year was also based on a book, namely the 2018 novel of the same name by Julia Whelan.
It is possible that the vogue referenced by Ware also includes Emerald Fennell’s 2023 psychological thriller Saltburn, which followed the shifting power dynamics between Oxford students who come from entirely different social castes. That movie had one of Prime Video’s best streaming debuts ever and was nominated for two Golden Globes.
It ultimately seems likely that the next Ware novel to be adapted will be The Woman from Suite 11, because having a project directly follow the explosive Woman in Cabin 10 ending might be the best way for Netflix to capitalize on its popularity.
However, Ware makes a good point about The It Girl being ripe for an adaptation. Additionally, it is well-positioned to be a solid follow-up to The Woman in Cabin 10 on Netflix, because it is one of Ware’s titles that has not already been optioned by another company. That roster includes In a Dark, Dark Wood, The Lying Game, and Zero Days.
