Anthony Mackie effectively squashes rumors about Captain America: Brave New World‘s villain that ties to Harrison Ford’s character. After starring in some of the most iconic franchises ever, Ford is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe via the upcoming Julius Onah film. The actor takes over the role of Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross following William Hurt’s passing in 2022.
Speaking with ComicBook, Mackie responds to theories Ford’s Ross will be Red Hulk in Captain America: Brave New World. For context, the veteran actor was spotted wearing ripped black pants fueling the theories. Read Mackie’s full quote below:
“See, Harrison [Ford] and I go way back. A lot of people don’t know this. This is our second time working together. He came down to Atlanta, they lost his luggage, so I gave him a pair of pants, but those are my work pants from working in the yard. Harrison, he’s a curmudgeon, so he goes, ‘Anthony, just give me the damned pants.’ And I was like, ‘Alright.’ So that’s all that was. He just needed some pants.”
Will Red Hulk Be In Captain America: Brave New World?
Further dissecting Mackie’s comments, however, he doesn’t actually deny that Ross will be Red Hulk in Captain America: Brave New World. Instead, he is just explaining the reason behind the image of Ford that sparked speculations about the matter. It’s still possible that Ross can still transform into the Red Hulk at any point in the movie. It’s also worth noting that even Mackie’s explanation is quite thin. Even if Ford lost his suitcases, it sounds unlikely that it would get so bad that he had to borrow Mackie’s clothes.
Ross and Sam Wilson have shared the screen before in the MCU, but they never really got any one-on-one interactions. As Wilson becomes more visible and active as the new Captain America, it will be interesting what their dynamic will be coming into Captain America: Brave New World. Even if Ross doesn’t transform into Red Hulk, it’s safe to assume that there will be some tension between the pair.
Production for Captain America: Brave New World has finished. However, the film doesn’t release until next year, which means that Marvel Studios can get away with not releasing anything about it for a while. When its trailer drops, however, one of its most-anticipated moments will likely be the first look at Ford’s Ross.
