Clean up on Canal Street: Letters

The Issue: ICE agents detaining multiple illegal venders and protesters on Canal Street in Chinatown.

Forgive me if I have no compassion for illegal vendors hawking knockoffs produced by slave labor in China, in front of stores manned by legal immigrants paying taxes and rent (“ICE’s Good Work on Canal Street,” Editorial, Oct. 23).

To add insult to injury, the miscreants have the audacity to do it blocks away from ICE headquarters.

I lived in the Canal Street area for over 20 years. This is nothing new. Vendors selling knockoffs blanket the sidewalks, making it hard to maneuver.

NYPD officers show up occasionally, arrest the vendors and confiscate goods, and the vendors are back the next day.

The police should show up as soon as they reappear and confiscate the knockoffs immediately. Arresting them is a waste of time — take the goods.

Having lived blocks away from Canal Street for 70 years, it baffles me why anyone wouldn’t want the illegal vendors off the street. The filth and the congestion was terrible.

Wow, thanks for keeping us updated on the major ICE effort arresting the “dangerous” criminals on Canal Street. Seriously?

Canal Street, with its street crew of sellers of knock-off merchandise, is a tourist destination. I would hardly say the vendors are affecting the brick-and-mortar stores selling the real items. Real Birkins and Rolexes are sold at the Hermès store and high-end jewelry stores on Madison Avenue, certainly not on Canal Street.

“A nest of filth and violence”? Hardly. It’s the same old hustle and bustle that’s been on that street for decades.

Adding in the fact that four of the people arrested were American citizens, I would say this maneuver was indeed a big bust.

The Issue: Former ESPN star Sam Ponder’s complaints about transgender athletes.

In The Post’s front-page story, former ESPN commentator Sam Ponder justifiably complains that her daughter should not have to compete in basketball (or in any other sport) against a “natural born boy” (“Ex-ESPN star calls foul,” Oct. 22).

Later in the article, the term “transgender athletes” is employed. Why pander to the biologically ignorant with such terms? Boys presenting as girls were born boys, are still boys and always will be male.

Sam Ponder is absolutely correct: the problem lies with the parents who buy into this “progressive” garbage.

May she continue to keep up “the good fight” toward re-establishing sanity in this country.

The entire world is aware of the dangers of women competing with biological men in the world of sports.

Why does the entire feminist movement remain silent as women become victims of such brutalities? Or is it not politically beneficial to stand up to the cowardly leaders who allow this barbarity to continue?

I’m sure many college and high-school girls have been badly injured competing against men who identify as women and we have seen enough. The time to act is now before a tragic moment occurs.
