Talk show host Drew Barrymore managed to rattle Top Gun: Maverick actor Glen Powell after praising the movie’s iconic beach football scene. The 37-year-old heartthrob appeared on The Drew Barrymore Show on Thursday, November 13, to talk about his film “The Running Man” that releases nationwide on Friday. Given the title of the film, Powell was asked whether he reached out to Tom Cruise since he’s known for sprinting a lot in his movies. This prompted him to talk about the shirtless sporty scene from the top-grossing 2022 film.

As training for “The Running Man,” the actor had asked sprinting coaches on who he should emulate and they said Tom Cruise. “Well, I have his number, so he was very helpful.”
“When we shot Top Gun: Maverick, there’s like a beach football scene,” Powell continued, before Barrymore quickly chimed in.
“Oh yeah, we don’t remember that at all,” she joked, causing Powell and the audience to chuckle.
As the actor settled himself, a part of the crowd clapped in praise of the iconic scene from the film, where Cruise’s character gathers shirtless trainees to play a round of beach football amid the setting sun. The clip became such a fan-favorite that Paramount released a three-hour version of it on YouTube.
Curling comfortably on the couch, Barrymore continued to pile on the compliments. “That was probably many people’s sexual awakening, slash we are play that on repeat rent-free in our minds!”
Surprised, Powell shook his head and couldn’t stop from grinning. “Alright, well… I don’t know what to do with that.” The actor laughed for a few seconds, trying to compose himself, before describing how he was impressed with Cruise’s speed while running along the beach.
The actor was a frontrunner for People’s “Sexiest Man Alive” in 2024. While that title ultimately went to John Krasinski, fans still named him “Sexiest Summer Action Star.”
Meanwhile, rumors that Powell is dating Sydney Sweeney continue to swirl.
