The movie ‘All That’s Left of You,’ recognized as Jordan’s official nominee for the Oscar, has been granted a significant accolade when it was nominated for the Best International Film at the Film Independent Spirit Awards. This prize has considerably altered and switched on the director Cherien Dabis’s plot about the various generations of Palestinians. Furthermore, the film has received the recognition worldwide and is waiting for its release in the USA theaters.

‘All That’s Left of You’ by Cherien Dabis is a director’s cross-generational story that is now winning international film festival recognition which will be shortly followed by an Oscar nomination. The nomination for the Best International Film of the Film Independent Spirit is a massive uplift for the feature which is the head of the director’s first-feature and it has just started its global festival run with US release on January 9.
The announcement was made along with a global audience showing support and being deeply involved in the matter. A good number of users pointed to the film’s impact on various cultures and feelings as being very strong. One of the users who thought a lot about the film’s title left a very moving comment which seemed to convey the sentiment of many. The user stated very poetically, “All that is left of you is a long journey towards freedom, a journey that is still taken by others whose hearts search for their liberation in the midst of darkness.” The comment also referred to “a strongness that has been handed down from one generation to the other” and thanked the supporters of “a story that is still being written with the tears of its people.”
Furthermore, there were also some revelations about the film’s locations. An Iranian user mentioned that the film will be accessible to the audience during the Fajr International Film Festival when he said, “You can see this film in Tehran cinemas during the Fajr International Film Festival,” thus commanding attention on the film’s vast influence. Another user, who is eagerly waiting to watch the movie in Indonesia, directly called a local distributor:” Please, bring it to Jakarta, it was far at the last fest!”
Even though the film mainly drew the audience’s attention due to the awards it received, that was not the only matter the discussions revolved around. The theme of the movie was so strong that it easily enlarged the discussions. Surprising really, one of the comments turned the conversation in a totally different and unrelated Hollywood project direction. The user dragged a production company into the conversation by saying, “yall should purchase the rights to this movie you could add a Palestinian touch to it and it will be very diverse variety.” This attempt to bridge the stories shows how a film like that of Dabis’s could be the source of more extensive creative discussions.
Some of the users went further and deeper into the conversation by talking through the historical and political issues that are complicated and sensitive and surround the Palestinian struggle by bringing historical figures into their discussions. Their comments not only provided comprehensive narratives of the history but also raised direct, hard questions, illustrating the very complicated and sometimes even divided discourse that is the background of such tales. It is mainly the film that brings up these hard yet necessary conversations.

The Spirit Award nomination means more than just a recognition from the industry for the people involved in ‘All That’s Left of You’ including Cherien Dabis. Rather, it is a very strong indication that this tale has broken through the wall and sees its value as a good one in the eyes of the audience and the audience’s given artistic value on a big platform. As the film prepares for its first showing in the United States, it will not only bear the critics’ praise but also the burden of the global discourses and the aspirations that it has almost become able to inspire—their weight. The film’s passage from the cinema circuit to the award shows is a clear indication of the eternal power of cinema to tell human stories and to create international dialogues.
