The flamboyant and outlandish character of the rapper and entrepreneur 50 Cent, who has been a huge public talk with his one million dollar watch, was already the talk of the hip hop world. The music artist who has been famous for his expensive posessions shared a video filmed at Art Basel in Miami, where he was confronted by a variety of reactions mostly consisting of positive feelings like wonder, humor and sharp criticism.

You know the vibes. Or at least, 50 Cent does. Curtis Jackson was the man who indeed stepped up and opened the door to the Miami Art Basel, the ultra-rich and luxurious playground where he liked to give a small hint about his world-wide shopping experience. The video shows nothing short of flashing lights and confident energy, where he is the center of attention revolving around a seriously high-end watch. “You might want to get you one of these my man!” he says with a cheeky smile. The punchline is “Only 1 million.”
One million dollars only. This is more or less the casual statement that defines the public image of 50 Cent—a mixture of victory, showmanship, and a little bit of affront. The watch, a Hublot, is revealed in what he calls the “raw condition” with the colors being brilliant under the lights. The vibe is personal, expensive, and undeniably Fif.
As you might expect, the reaction took place in a very short time and diverged enormously. It is an amazing which way people react to the very showing off of wealth that is quite extreme, especially considering that 50 Cent who owns the brand “rising from nothing to be able to use ‘only’ for a million” is the one displaying it.
Several of the onlookers were very quick to interpret it as a very positive point of view and called it simple divine motivation. A user, who was astonished at how “cool” the price of only one million was wrote, “Yo 50cent can ya put me down for whatever that will make me calling $1M ‘just’ someday?” It is a common wish—the desire for such a financial free lifestyle which is 50 Cent guided. Another user simply stated: “Fifty is fire. I dig the hand chain.”
The tweet was probably not only aimed at every admirer but also at a doubter or a critic. The market of luxury watches is elitist and Hublot has its detractors. One gene ungainly asserted “Flashing a Hublot. Get out of here with that trash.” Another said, “Nobody wants Hublot anymore 50.” Nevertheless, the criticism was not only directed at brand loyalty; some people found the watch boring both visually and functionally. “It looks like a cereal box watch from 2001 silly ass nigga lol,” one user joked while another just straight out pronounced it “UglyAsFuck,” implying you need to get two: “One to sht on and the other to cover it up.”
Then came in the relatable and down-to-earth responses who stressed the factors leading to a great economic gap. “I can’t afford even an Apple Watch. Sorry I’ll have to pass on this,” one user was mourning. Another one was very direct, “Can barely afford groceries bro. WTF.” The fun part of these replies has been highlighted by a feeling of exhaustion from the reality of world, and it’s reminding that for many people a million-dollar watch is not a flex but a different universe. “I got $3.50 to cover my $999,997.5 and we are good,” one user creatively remarked.

There were also a few users who could not help but to draw parallels between the 50 Cent’s recent adventures and the watch. “50 out there spending that documentary money,” one person remarked pointing to his very profitable star-turned-doc involvement in the recent Diddy documentary. Another directly inquired, “Is this money from the Diddy documentary?” And a third wondered, “The documentary royalties are already out my G?” It properly indicates, how closely the audience is following 50’s empire just as the latter watches his wrist.
The jokes and jabs aside, there was a tiny portion of sincerity. “I rather a hug from u than something like a gift,” one individual wrote, cutting off the materialism with a very human request. Another wrote, “Free gift for us then fiddy? I’m in Australia bro,” taking their shot with humorous optimism.

In the end, 50 Cent’s post was exactly what it was meant to be. Talking, reacting, and engaging are the things that the people did. Besides the fact that he reinforced his image as the king of luxury, it also opened the mirror to the different views of his followers from aspiration to critique, from laughter to a stark look of economic reality. While the watch does tell the time, the public reaction tells a much bigger story of fame, money. His ventures, like his massive television empire, continue to build his brand. He often shares moments from his life, such as a viral video of an elderly woman dancing with hip-hop stars. He also stays connected to his roots with G-Unit, having recently launched new G-Unit sweatsuits. And true to form, he keeps his social media lively, as seen when he joked about making Tony Yayo slap Jimmy in a wild Instagram post.
