The Witcher star Henry Cavill shows off his commitment to the role of Geralt and the battles he faces in this behind-the-scenes footage from the Netflix series. Released courtesy of EW, the footage finds Cavill slicing and dicing his way through his enemies in season three’s one-shot fight sequences set in the ancient palace, Shaerrawedd. According to The Witcher stunt coordinator and second unit director Wolfgang Stegemann, Cavill takes part in the choreography alongside the stunt team, with the actor and the crew having rehearsed the complex sequence more than 90 times over.
“Then Henry, because he’s so skilled, knows exactly when he is going in that direction and has this guy approaching, he already starts thinking, ‘What am I doing when this other guy comes from that side?’ This is how we start building the choreography,” Stegemann said of Cavill’s dedication.
“Henry is super precise and his passion is just outstanding,” he continues. “I love it so much because he wants to have it perfect. When I was like, ‘That was great.’ He said, ‘Eh, let’s do one more.'” Not only does Stegemann praise Cavill’s hard work with filming, he also commends the actor’s compassion for the rest of the team, helping with carrying “equipment, including mats” on the set. “Even for another stunt guy who has to do the stunt,” he adds, “I am so proud of Henry that he runs this fight in many high-intensity takes. He’s putting his all in, and completely dedicated his whole life.”
The Witcher Season 3 Part 2 Lands on Netflix Next Week
Fans of Henry Cavill will see the actor commit to playing Geralt for the final time in volume two of The Witcher season three. “As monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly-reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it,” the official synopsis for The Witcher season three reads. “Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl’s untapped powers; instead, they discover they’ve landed in a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line — or risk losing each other forever.”
From creator Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, The Witcher will continue to adapt the book series of the same name, continuing the saga of Anya Chalotra as Yennefer of Vengerberg, Freya Allan as Ciri, and Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia. The rest of the supporting cast includes Joey Batey as Jaskier, Royce Pierreson as Istredd, Anna Shaffer as Triss Merigold, and Kim Bodnia as Vesemir.
The Hunger Games and Independence Day: Resurgence star Liam Hemsworth will take over from Cavill in The Witcher season four and beyond, and based on this footage from backstage, he has some very big shoes to fill.
Volume one of The Witcher season three is now available to stream on Netflix, with volume two due to land on the streaming platform on July 27.
