Tom Cruise Will Not Ask Donald Trump for Permission to Film in Space for New Movie

We may finally know the mission that Tom Cruise finds impossible: asking a favor of President Donald Trump. According to a new report from Page Six, the Top Gun star’s potential new movie that would see him going into space to film footage has been grounded because Cruise doesn’t want to ask Trump for permission to do it.

For the last five years, Cruise has been teasing his possible voyage beyond the Earth to make a movie that he and Edge of Tomorrow director Doug Liman have been planning with the cooperation of NASA and Space X. However, it seems that there is one other person he would need on board to be able to rocket off on his latest adrenaline junkie adventure, and it is someone that he is not enthusiastic about seeking out the approval of. According to the report’s sources:

“From what I understand, they would need NASA coordination to do the movie, and supposedly Tom Cruise did not want to ask Donald Trump for a favor. You’d need permission from the federal government. Tom didn’t want to ask for political reasons.”

Cruise has never been one to get into politics, and he clearly does not want to be seen schmoozing up with Donald Trump to carry out his ambitious project despite former NASA administrator, Trump-appointed Jim Bridenstine, previously sharing a Tweet about the project. However, Bridenstine is no longer in that role, and his tweet has been deleted. It seems that this has effectively ended Cruise’s possible space movie, despite it having interest from Universal when it was originally announced.

While Cruise’s dreams of moviemaking in space may be in a status of failure to launch, that doesn’t mean he isn’t already working on his next project. While this year saw him reportedly saying goodbye to his Mission: Impossible franchise, his currently untitled black comedy with director Alejandro González Iñárritu wrapped in May and is expected to arrive in cinemas on October 2, 2026.

Last month, Cruise shared an update on the movie, adding an image of his first rehearsal for the movie to his Instagram account with a gushing message to his latest director. He wrote:

“Today, I shared the first photo taken last year during a rehearsal on the set of my new film with Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Alejandro, 25 years ago I watched your first film, the classic Amores Perros. This weekend, 25 years later, I was deeply moved to have been presented the Honorary Oscar by you, my dear friend. I cannot wait to share our new film with you all next year!”

The post came after Cruise was presented an honorary Oscar at the 16th annual Governor’s Awards by Iñárritu. The film is currently under wraps, but has an ensemble cast including Sandra Hüller, John Goodman, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Riz Ahmed, Sophie Wilde, and Emma D’Arcy, and follows “the most powerful man in the world, who embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s savior before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything.”
