The newest star on the block, Iman Vellani, star of Ms. Marvel series, has gained her colleagues’ approval as a true Marvel Cinematic Universe fan.
The world of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is so vast and complex that even the most seasoned actors sometimes struggle to keep everything straight. Yet, Vellani stands out, effortlessly navigating the MCU’s complexities, a testament to her deep connection and understanding of the Marvel world.
Brie Larson, who dons the powerful mantle of Carol Danvers or Captain Marvel, recently revealed during an Entertainment Weekly interview that when it comes to MCU know-how, everyone on the set of the upcoming film, The Marvels, implicitly trusts Vellani.
Larson humorously added,
“I’ve just learned to trust Iman because she really has her timelines in order. I wouldn’t know how old Carol is without her.”
Vellani, who plays the effervescent Kamala Khan or Ms. Marvel, further proved her MCU expertise when she accurately recounted to Larson and Teyonah Parris (Monica Rambeau/Photon) about the time they first saw Black Widow together in 2021. Vellani charmingly remarked,
“I just say things with enough conviction, and they believe me.”
Inside Iman Vellani’s Deep Connection with the MCU
Iman Vellani’s deep-rooted passion for Marvel is not a newfound trait. Before she became Kamala Khan on screen, she was a dedicated Marvel fan off-screen. This affection played a pivotal role in her landing the role of Kamala in the Disney+ series in 2022. Sana Amanat, co-creator of the Kamala Khan character, recalled the unforgettable moment during Vellani’s Zoom audition when she showcased her room adorned wall-to-wall with Avengers memorabilia. And just when Amanat thought she had seen it all, Vellani exclaimed, “Oh wait, I’m not done,” revealing even more Marvel treasures in her closet.
While Vellani’s expertise is rooted in comic lore, her character Kamala comes into the MCU with her own set of expectations about superhero teamwork. At the 2022 D23 Expo, Vellani offered some insight into her role in The Marvels. Kamala, a comic enthusiast in the narrative, has preconceived notions about how things should work, derived from countless comic books and superhero tales. But, as Vellani put it, Kamala realizes the reality is “not exactly what she dreamed it was gonna be.” Despite this, she becomes “the glue of the group,” binding the characters together.
Zooming out to give the broader picture of The Marvels, the film promises a riveting tale. The 2022 synopsis tantalized fans with glimpses of Carol Danvers’ journey after breaking free from the clutches of the oppressive Kree and avenging herself on the Supreme Intelligence. As she navigates the complexities of a universe thrown into chaos, Carol stumbles upon a mysterious wormhole connected to a Kree revolutionary. This sets the stage for a cosmic entanglement of powers between Carol, Kamala, and Monica. The trio will need to synchronize their strengths and skills if they hope to restore order to the universe, establishing themselves as The Marvels.
The Marvels promises to be another jewel in the MCU crown. And with passionate ambassadors like Iman Vellani, it’s clear the spirit of Marvel is well and truly alive both on and off the screen.
