The My Big Fat Greek Wedding franchise is all set to return to theaters with this brand-new adventure. Join the Portokalos family as they travel to a family reunion in Greece for a heartwarming and hilarious trip full of love, twists and turns as the sequel picks up with Toula and her family after the passing of Gus, Toula’s father, whose last wish was for his children to visit his childhood village in Greece. Thus, the whole family packs a suitcase and heads off to Europe ready to reconnect to their roots.
This time around, the latest outing for My Big Fat Greek Wedding will be both directed and written by lead star Nia Vardalos, who also returns to reprise the role of Fotoula “Toula” Portokalos in the follow-up. The rest of the cast includes John Corbett as Toula’s husband Ian and Elena Kampouris as their daughter Paris.
The rest of the cast includes Lainie Kazan as the mother Maria Portokalos, Andrea Martin as Thiea Voula, Louis Mandylor as Nick Portakalos, Gia Carides as Nikki Portokalos, and Gerry Mendicino as Uncle Taki as well as Joey Fatone, Stavroula Logothettis, Elias Kacavas, Maria Vacratsis, Peter Tharos, and Chrissy Paraskevopoulos. Notably absent is actor Michael Constantine, who played Toula’s father Gus in both My Big Fat Greek Wedding and My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2. Sadly, Constantine passed away in 2021, with My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 working his passing into the story.
My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 Is Sure to Be a Tear-Jerker
Released back in 2002, the first My Big Fat Greek Wedding introduced audiences to the Portokalos family. Worried about Toula, who is unmarried at 30 years old and works at Dancing Zorba’s, the Greek restaurant owned by her parents, the movie follows Toula as she falls in love with Ian Miller, a teacher who is tall, handsome and definitely not Greek. Received well by critics, the first outing was followed first by the sitcom My Big Fat Greek Life and then by a sequel, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, in 2016.
Despite the negative reaction to the second installment, the comedy franchise has seen major success at the box office, with Nia Vardalos teasing a real tear-jerker in My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3. “We actually have a scene where we’re dancing on a dock in the most beautiful cobalt light that our incredible cinematographer Barry Peterson waited for and waited for and waited for,” the writer, director, and star said. “John and I are standing on a pier dancing together, and we were both in tears. It was incredible.”
My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 is scheduled to be released in theaters on September 8, 2023.
