Apple TV has added another show to its list of series that have been canceled after just a single season. Just two weeks after rolling out its season finale, The Last Frontier has been given the cold shoulder when it comes to a possible Season 2 renewal.
The thriller series starred Jason Clarke as Frank Remnick, a “lone U.S. marshal in charge of the quiet, rugged barrens of Alaska. Remnick’s jurisdiction is turned upside down when a prison transport plane crashes in the remote wilderness, setting free dozens of violent inmates. Tasked with protecting the town he’s vowed to keep safe, he begins to suspect the crash wasn’t an accident, but the first step of a well-crafted plan with far-reaching and devastating implications.”
The Last Frontier debuted on Apple TV on October 10 and delivered its final episode on December 5. The series received mixed reviews from both audiences and critics. While there will not be a new season of the thriller series, creators Jon Bokenkamp and Richard D’Ovidio had an idea of where the story would go next. They said of a second season:
“I think that we’ve discussed many avenues to take with the second season, but we’ve pretty much exhausted a lot of stories in Alaska,” D’Ovidio said, with Bokenkamp noting, “We’ve certainly talked a lot about where they end up, maybe a beach somewhere. But it also occurs to me that the U.S. Marshals hunt bad guys around the world. Sidney [Bennett] and Havlock [Cooper] represent a problem to Frank, but that doesn’t mean they are his only problem.”
‘The Last Frontier’ Could Not Live Up To Expectation
Coming from the creator of The Blacklist, and having a strong cast including Clarke, Dominic Cooper (The Gold), Haley Bennett (The Magnificent Seven), and Simone Kessell (Yellowjackets), many expected a lot from The Last Frontier. Perhaps this is why many were disappointed with the series, leading to a 46% and 50% Rotten Tomatoes scores from critics and audiences, respectively.
Viewers were clearly split down the middle, with some calling the show “an excellent thriller” and a “suspenseful and wild ride,” while others called it “convoluted” with “appalling writing,” with the “most boring, painful, woeful acting show I’ve watched in a long time.”
Apple TV has developed a reputation as a streamer that delivers quality television on its platform and not a host of licensed movies and shows from other studios. In the past, this has reportedly seen Apple TV lose money, mainly due to the huge expense that comes with many of their shows. This means that as soon as a series fails to perform, the likelihood of it being canceled is quite high. The Last Frontier seemed to have everything it needed to be a great action series, with an exciting premise and a team known for the quality of their previous work. In the current streaming climate, when more and more content is being made available, a new series really has to grab audiences from the start to have any chance of survival. Sadly, The Last Frontier just did not thrill enough people to make it to a second season.
