Disney’s Exciting Avengers Announcement Only Damages MCU’s Future

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is starting to course-correct, but what is technically an exciting Avengers announcement from Disney can sabotage this. As the Multiverse Saga inches its way towards its culmination with Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel Studios is starting to market the film. This is despite the film still a year away from hitting theaters.

Marking the MCU return of directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who directed the record-breaking Avengers: Endgame, Avengers: Doomsday will also see the return of Robert Downey Jr. as Dr. Doom and Chris Evans reprising his role as Steve Rogers. Subsequent trailers are expected to be released in the coming weeks to drum up hype. However, what is supposed to be a fun update for long-time fans of the MCU may ultimately derail the film.

Disney Is Re-releasing Avengers: Endgame In September 2026

It has been announced that Disney is re-releasing Avengers: Endgame in theaters in September 2026. Disney has done this before after the film first premiered in April 2019, helping it grow its already massive gross. From a busines perspective, doing so is appealing for couple of reasons. Firstly, it allows the studio to continue capitalizing on the success of the film even though it has been years since it first rolled out. Disney doesn’t have to spend a large amount of money for it, as well.

Secondly, it can help revive people’s interest in the MCU. It’s no secret that ever since the Infinity Saga ended, the franchise has encountered several issues that its first decade otherwise didn’t have. Casting changes, divisive reception, and other scandals haunted the universe, resulting in a decrease in people’s eagerness to dive back into it. However, reminding the public of how glorious Avengers: Endgame is in 2019 is a great way to get them talking again.

Avengers: Endgame’s Re-release Is Way Too Close To Avengers: Doomsday’s Roll Out

Ordinarily, this is a good move for Disney and Marvel Studios. The problem, however, comes when one considers how close the Avengers: Endgame‘s re-release is to Avengers: Doomsday‘s premiere, which is scheduled for December 2026. By then, marketing for the film should already be in full swing, especially since the franchise is starting early with the roll out of Avengers: Doomsday trailers a full year before it premieres. The releases this close would make it more susceptible to comparisons.

Not that comparing the films won’t happen if Avengers: Endgame doesn’t get re-release; at this point, that’s a given. However, by reminding fans how great the 2019 film is, it’s setting a really high bar for Avengers: Doomsday — a big risk, considering the less-than-ideal set-up of the Multiverse Saga. It doesn’t help that Downey Jr. is playing an entirely different character in the upcoming film — a creative choice that is already drawing mixed response.

After 6 Years, Marvel Studios Finally Admits That The Multiverse Saga Is A Failure

The MCU was at its peak when the Multiverse Saga started, but half a decade later, Kevin Feige and his team finally admit its failure to launch

Of course, this is unless Marvel Studios is truly confident that Avengers: Doomsday is going to meet expectations. Considering what the Russos were able to do with Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the pair is the safest option when it comes to ending the Multiverse Saga. If that’s the case, then the Avengers: Endgame re-release plan shouldn’t pose a problem. If it isn’t however, they may have just doomed the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
