⁠Jean-Luc Mélenchon, the leading figure in the hard-left ​La France Insoumise (France Unbowed, LFI) political party, will stand in next year’s presidential election, he said on Sunday.

“Yes, I am a candidate,” ​Mélenchon told French television network ‌TF1.

Mélenchon, 74, has been a ⁠fixture of the French left for decades, holding ministerial posts in past governments ‌when he was a Socialist Party member. He ran ⁠for president in 2012, 2017 and 2022, coming third that year behind far-right leader Marine Le Pen ​and French President Emmanuel ⁠Macron.

“We have less than ‌a year to go until the second round of the election. With us, it is all sorted out – there is ‌a team, a manifesto, and a single candidate,” added Mélenchon.

Under the French constitution, ​Macron cannot seek a third mandate as president. Edouard Philippe, Macron’s first prime minister in 2017, is also set to stand ​in 2027, representing a centre-right camp.

The far-right National Rally (RN) ​party, led by Le Pen and her ​protégé Jordan Bardella, is polling strongly at present although the RN failed to ​win control of any major city during French municipal elections in March.

Israel has carried out fresh air strikes in southern Lebanon. Officials there said at least one person was killed and four others were wounded.The strikes came after the Israel Defense Forces issued new evacuation warnings on Sunday for residents in more than ten villages and towns, including the city of Nabatieh. Residents were ordered to leave their homes and move at least 1,000 metres away to open areas.The hostilities are continuing despite a ceasefire signed last month between Israel and Lebanon, which was intended to halt the fighting with Iran-backed Hezbollah.Israel has accused Hezbollah of repeated violations of the truce. Two young women believed to be of Sudanese origin died Sunday while trying to reach Britain from northern France in a small boat, officials said.

The women, aged about 20, were aboard a small boat carrying 82 people, Christophe Marx, a regional government official, told reporters.

The boat set out to sea during the night from Saturday to Sunday, but “the engine wouldn’t start” and the boat began to drift, Marx said.

Seventeen people were rescued at sea and taken to the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer.

The boat with the remaining 65 people on board eventually ran aground on a beach near Neufchatel-Hardelot, about 12 kilometres south of Boulogne-sur-Mer, he said, adding that the victims had been found “dead inside the boat”.

Thirteen people with moderate injuries and three others with serious wounds, including burn victims, were taken to hospital.

They were “being treated and will be interviewed by border police to determine who is responsible for this crossing”, Marx said.

He said an investigation would confirm the nationality of the victims.

This is the third such tragedy in just over a month at the French-British border.

On April 1, two migrants died off the coast of Gravelines in northern France while attempting to reach the United Kingdom.

On April 9, two men and two women died, swept away by the currents.

In 2025, at least 29 migrants died at sea in the region, according to an AFP tally based on official French and British sources.

Britain and France last month signed a new three-year deal on security operations to stop the crossings.

France will increase the number of police and gendarmes patrolling the coast while the British government will increase its contribution to the cost.

According to French officials, the number of arrivals in Britain so far this year has been drastically cut from 2025.

Detained Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi has been hospitalised in Iran, her supporters said, “following a catastrophic deterioration of her health”.

Mohammadi, who won the peace prize in 2023 in recognition of more than two decades of rights campaigning, was arrested in December in Iran’s eastern city of Mashhad after speaking out against the country’s clerical authorities at a funeral ceremony.

Her supporters had been issuing warnings for months about her health, saying in late March that she had suffered a suspected heart attack but received inadequate medical treatment.

In a statement posted by her foundation on Friday, they said she was “urgently transferred to a hospital in Zanjan today” after a rapid deterioration, “including two episodes of complete loss of consciousness and a severe cardiac crisis”.

The statement said her family described the move as a “last-minute action” that could prove too late.

In Oslo the Norwegian Nobel Committee urged the Iranian authorities “to immediately transfer Narges Mohammadi to her dedicated medical team in Tehran”.

“Without such treatment, her life remains at risk,” committee chair Jorgen Watne Frydnes said. “Her life is now in the hands of the Iranian authorities.”

In a social media post, her lawyer Mostafa Nili said Mohammadi initially refused to be transferred to hospital after fainting the first time from a sudden drop in blood pressure, because of previous warnings from medics that Zanjan hospital was not capable of treating her.

But, following a second collapse and a further deterioration, she was moved to the facility.

“According to the neurologist, despite her serious cardiac issues, addressing her neurological state is currently the clinical priority,” Nili said.

Over the past quarter of a century, Mohammadi, 53, has been repeatedly tried and jailed for her campaigning against Iran’s use of capital punishment and its mandatory dress code for women.

US President Donald Trump said Friday he was “not satisfied” with Iran’s latest proposal in negotiations to end the war between the countries, rejecting the plan almost as soon as it was delivered.

Iran handed over its latest proposal for negotiations to mediators in Pakistan on Thursday night, Iran’s state-run IRNA news agency reported.

“They want to make a deal, I’m not satisfied with it, so we’ll see what happen,” Trump told reporters Friday at the White House.

The shaky three-week ceasefire between the US and Iran appears to still be holding though both countries have traded accusations of violations.

Trump did not elaborate on what he saw as the latest proposal’s shortcomings. “They’re asking for things I can’t agree to,” he said.

Negotiations have continued by phone after Trump called off his envoys’ trip to Pakistan last week, the president said. He expressed frustration with Iran’s leadership, describing it as fractured.

“It’s a very disjointed leadership,” he said. “They all want to make a deal, but they’re all messed up.”

While the ceasefire has largely halted fighting in Iran, the US and Iran are locked in a standoff over the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world’s traded oil and gas passes in peacetime. A US Navy blockade stopping Iran’s tankers from getting out to sea has Iran’s economy reeling. The world economy is also under pressure as Iran maintains its chokehold on the strait. 

Trump this week floated a new plan to reopen the critical passageway used by America’s Gulf allies to export their oil and gas.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held a flurry of calls on Friday with many of his regional counterparts, including from Turkey, Egypt, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Azerbaijan, to brief them on his country’s latest initiatives to end the war, according to his social media.

European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas also spoke over phone Friday with Araghchi. They discussed ongoing diplomatic efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and long-term security arrangements, Kallas’ office said in a statement. Kallas also has been in contact with the EU’s Gulf partners. 

Pakistan officials have said efforts were continuing to ease tensions between Iran and the US. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif told a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday that a response from Iran was still awaited.

Meanwhile, Iran’s imprisoned Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi has been urgently transferred from prison to a hospital in northwestern Iran after a “catastrophic deterioration” of her health, her foundation said Friday.

The Narges Mohammadi Foundation said the Nobel Prize laureate had two episodes of complete loss of consciousness and a severe cardiac crisis. She was believed to have suffered a heart attack in late March, according to her lawyers who visited her a few days after the incident.

The hospital transfer comes “after 140 days of systematic medical neglect,” since her arrest on Dec. 12, the foundation said.

Earlier this week, Trump told Axios that he had rejected Iran’s proposal to reopen the strait in exchange for the US Navy lifting its blockade of Iranian ports. 

The Iranian proposal would have pushed negotiations on the country’s nuclear program to a later date, two regional officials said earlier this week. The officials with knowledge of the proposal spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss closed-door negotiations between Iranian and Pakistani officials. 

One of the major reasons Trump has said he went to war was to deny Iran the ability to develop nuclear weapons.

An explosion of leftover bombs from strikes during the war against Iran killed 14 members of the Revolutionary Guard, IRNA and other Iranian media reported Friday.

A report by the Nournews website, believed to be close to Iran’s security, said the explosion happened near the northern city of Zanjan, which is northwest of Tehran.

It was the largest number of Revolutionary Guard members reported to be killed since the ceasefire began on April 7. The report said the ammunition included cluster bombs and air mines dropped during the fighting.

Since the war began on Feb. 28, at least 3,375 people have been killed in Iran, and more than 2,600 people in Lebanon, where new fighting between Israel and the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah broke out two days after the war started, according to authorities.

Additionally, 24 people have died in Israel and more than 20 in Gulf Arab states. Seventeen Israeli soldiers in Lebanon and 13 U.S. service members throughout the region have been killed.
