After four years, The Terminal List is finally back. The Prime Video action thriller returned for a second season on Oct. 21, 2026, and it easily fills the void Reacher just left. The two shows deliver the same core pleasures: competent protagonists with military backgrounds, conspiracy-driven investigations, and endless action. However, there’s a better Reacher Season 4 replacement. Chain Reaction, the newest Jack Reacher book, was released on Oct. 20, 2026, a day before The Terminal List Season 2.

Chain Reaction adds to a growing list of Lee Child’s highly engaging works of literature that have topped bestseller lists for more than three decades. Killing Floor, the first Jack Reacher novel, was released in 1997. So far, there have been 31 novels and short stories in the series. Six of the books have been adapted for cinema and television, with a seventh (Make Me) confirmed as the source material for Reacher‘s upcoming fifth season. Here’s where the latest publication takes us.

‘Chain Reaction’ Takes Jack Reacher Back to a Smaller Playground

Chain Reaction is a collaborative effort by Lee Child and his younger brother, Andrew Child. The book brings back General Susan Turner, a character from Never Go Back, a book previously adapted into the Tom Cruise Reacher movie. She is now heading G-99 Section, an elite military investigative unit often described as the Army’s equivalent of the FBI, reporting directly to the Chief of Staff.

When a member of Turner’s team — CID Special Agent John Bisley, a cyber forensics specialist — is brutally murdered while on a covert assignment in Summertown, Colorado, she begins suspecting a larger conspiracy and that there is a traitor in her ranks. Bisley’s death is officially ruled as a mugging gone wrong, but Turner doesn’t buy it. Left with few options, she considers reaching out to an elusive Jack Reacher for help.

Jack Reacher’s return to a small-town setting is a reason to be excited. It’s a refreshing move, following Reacher Season 4’s political conspiracy storyline. Summertown is described as a remote, near-empty place with only one diner, one motel, five data centers, and two giant solar farms. This makes it an ideal place for anyone looking to conduct shady business dealings without much scrutiny.

Early reviews have been positive. Publishers Weekly describes it as “sturdy” and “loads of fun.” The choice to include a childcare element alongside a highly complex data-center plot makes the book thematically richer than previous installments. The return of Turner has also been praised, as she is a great character who had been ignored for too long in favor of less-intriguing supporting players.

The action, narrative efficiency, and overall pacing are also of note, though questions remain about whether the book series has evolved since Andrew Child’s inclusion. Additionally, as of Oct. 22, 2026, it currently has 4.5 out of 5 stars on Goodreads, a figure that may change as more reviews arrive.

‘Chain Reaction’ Is Perfect for the Prime Video Series

Chain Reaction is one of the best fits for Alan Ritchson’s version of Jack Reacher. The Prime Video series has been at its best whenever Jack Reacher walks into calm territory with major secrets under the surface. Season 1 is one of the best Reacher seasons, and its Margrave setting is remembered fondly. Not only did it have great visual texture, but it was also insular and controlled by nefarious figures. Summertown, Colorado, is similar. It’s a near-ghost town that’s visually striking, but suspicious. One of the few residents even watches Jack Reacher closely when he arrives.

Beyond that, Susan Turner is one of the most significant and likable characters in the book series. Her history with Jack Reacher stretches beyond professional lines, so this could create room for an interesting romance subplot, as has been the case with all Reacher seasons. Even though she hasn’t appeared on the show before, sufficient backstory can be provided through flashbacks or dialogue.

Bringing her in via Chain Reaction would give the series a major new recurring ally who is equally competent and shares Reacher’s views. This is essential, considering Reacher’s reliable ally, Frances Neagley, now has her own spin-off show and might not be around to help much.

Chain Reaction’s modernity also makes it a great fit for a Prime Video adaptation. Reacher Season 4’s major book change created room for an AI-driven plot that worked extremely well. The book strikes similar notes by placing Jack Reacher against surveillance systems, data centers, and a powerful tech organization (Everything Everywhere Forever / EEF) with massive financial stakes and major ties to corporate espionage. This contrasts beautifully with the protagonist’s defining analog traits: no smartphones, hardly any digital footprint, and physical problem-solving.

It would be amazing if Amazon and showrunner Nick Santora considered it.

The 1980s were genuinely a golden age for sci-fi. Star Wars and Alien might have come around in the previous decade, but their superior sequels both changed the game, and those successes were where two of the biggest franchises in sci-fi history were actually born.

An explosion in imagination and technology meant a whole strand of warmer, family-oriented sci-fis pushed the boundaries of wonder and brought in a whole new army of fans, with the likes of E.T., Flight of the Navigator, and The Last Starfighter consciously courting the younger audience unlocked by the advent of the blockbuster era.

Alongside that, of course, the genre expanded outwards with darker action fare like Predator and The Terminator, and high-concept hard sci-fi like Blade Runner met horror-infused brilliance like The Thing and Aliens. But the true winner of the decade was Back To The Future, which has a near-mythical pull on audiences still to this day. It’s quintessential pop culture magic, and one of the most rewatchable movies ever made.

But what if I told you another 1985 sci-fi also deserves to be praised as another part of that year’s incredible line-up of culture-setting movies and you can’t even watch it today? What if, in 1985, Ron Howard made a heartwarming, charming sci-fi that won two Oscars and is now effectively the best lost masterpiece of the most important era of sci-fi filmmaking? Step forward, Cocoon.

Cocoon Was One Of The 1980s Best Sci-Fis

Showered with critical acclaim on its release, Cocoon is now more known with younger audiences as the source of the meme about Wilford Brimley only being 50 years old at the time it came out. That, frankly, is a tragedy, because Howard’s sweet elegy for lost youth is a triumphant example of peak 1980s Spielbergian storytelling.

The idea of benevolent aliens coming to Earth not to conquer or destroy as so many grim sci-fis have warned, but to grant renewed youth to elderly residents of a Florida retirement home doesn’t sound like the dream formula for stirring up youthful audiences but it was like lightning in a bottle. Sometimes accused of over-sentimentality in a way E.T. avoided, Cocoon’s treatment of the elder characters (including Brimley and Don Ameche) was beautiful, and the younger cast led by Steve Gutenberg and Jessica Tandy was just as brilliant. Ironically, this alien sci-fi movie absolutely nails its commitment to humanity.

For pure science-fiction fans there’s also great alien designs and effects work, including assistance from the great Ralph McQuarrie, and all-in-all it’s a brilliant bit of sci-fi storytelling that, unthinkably, you’re currently forbidden from enjoying.

Why You Can’t Watch Cocoon Now

Despite its box office success and award-winning pedigree, if you go looking for Cocoon on streaming, you’ll come up short. It simply does not exist on modern digital formats, meaning you can’t revisit it today unless you bought it on physical media before it went out of print. Even the Blu-ray is now difficult to get hold of.

Sadly, it all apparently comes down to rights issues. The rights to James Horner’s incredible soundtrack were reportedly never updated to include modern new media distribution, and Disney’s acquisition of Fox, the movie’s original rights owners, has left it lost in limbo. It doesn’t appear that Disney is particularly motivated to sort that issue out, given the movie’s 40th anniversary passed without resolution last year.

It’s a tragedy: the idea that one of the best overlooked sci-fis that Disney literally owns is not sitting on Disney+ (nor its sequel, which can be bought or rented on VOD but doesn’t make much sense without the original) is almost criminal. Let’s hope it’s here by the time it gets to the 50th anniversary…

The 2000s were a great time for sci-fi thriller TV shows. Nowadays, in the era of streaming, it can be hard to define TV show genres. A Voyage Across Time and Space Like No Other

Watch This If: You’re looking for a lengthy sci-fi franchise to sink your teeth into. When Doctor Who returned to screens in 2005, almost 16 years after the classic era ended, it was immediately apparent this was something special. Several of the greatest Doctor Who episodes of all time are from the modern era, and although some of the show’s other episodes aren’t exactly the best, they’re consistently strong enough that no season can be considered “bad.” The Doctors and their companions’ journeys across time and space are comical, heartwarming, and devastating, often all at the same time, but it’s impossible not to fall in love with all of them.

Skip This If: You don’t have the time to remember complex lore, or if you’re somewhat of a completionist. Since it began in 1963, there have been hundreds of episodes, a TV movie, and an array of other Doctor Who specials. The Doctor’s story is a complicated one, and there’s a lot of Doctor Who ​​​​​​content to binge, which might be a bit overwhelming for some.

‘Battlestar Galactica’ (2003, 2004-2009)

A Fantastic Reimagining of the 1970s Classic

Watch This If: You enjoy sci-fi TV masterpieces in general. Kicking off with a three-hour miniseries and continuing for a further four full seasons, the reboot/reimagining of Battlestar Galactica ​​​​​​is a fantastic watch. Battlestar Galactica is darker and grittier than the original 1970s series, but it sets the tone of the show brilliantly, and it makes the story of humanity’s attempts to avoid extinction at the hands of the Cylons even more endearing. On the surface, Battlestar Galactica looks to be your classic sci-fi action TV show, but it’s also incredibly deep, and delves into things like intergalactic politics and the human psyche.

Skip This If: You’re not interested in watching anything that challenges morality. Battlestar Galactica is very complex and sees several of its characters battling moral conundrums. While this isn’t a criticism, and if anything, many believe this is what makes it such a great show, some viewers might not want to watch something so heavy-hitting.

‘Farscape’ (1999-2003)

An Iconic Sci-Fi Cult Classic

Watch This If: You enjoy sci-fi titles that are as equally cheesy as they are dramatic. At a glance, Farscape‘s story, about a lost astronaut stuck on a ship with a bunch of alien fugitives a long way from home, seems rather camp. But in reality, the show is actually a hard-hitting, emotionally tumultuous, and visually appealing watch that should be taken seriously. Despite originally airing in 1999, the show is very noughties-coded, and it’s often been compared to Firefly. In fact, Farscape outlasted Firefly, wrapping up in 2003 after a total of four seasons.

Skip This If: You don’t want to watch something without a proper ending. Production originally planned a five-season run for the show, so Farscape’s abrupt cancellation resulted in the Season 4 finale ending on a cliffhanger. To this day, Farscape‘s ending is one audiences are still hoping will be redeemed or rewritten in some way, but as of 2026, the Farscape web series we were promised by its creator has still not happened.

‘Fringe’ (2008-2013)

A Perfect Sci-Fi Mystery That Rivals ‘Severance’

Watch This If: You’re looking for a good science fiction mystery. Fringe‘s characters are just as important in driving the narrative as the plot itself, especially Anna Torv as Olivia Dunham, whose role as an FBI agent sends her into a world of time travel, alternate dimensions, and more. With romantic subplots, shocking plot twists, and plenty of science fiction enigmas, Fringe ​​​​​​is a wild ride. It can feel a little confusing at times, especially in the later seasons when it jumps back and forth between parallel universes, but that’s part of Fringe‘s overall appeal, as well as a staple of a J.J. Abrams hard sci-fi series.

Skip This If: You’re looking for something consistent. The show changes a bit during its run; it starts as a story-of-the-week format, and it later slips into a serialized structure. While some viewers prefer the earlier format, every installment of Fringe is still as enthralling as the last, but it’s understandable if some viewers prefer a show that sticks to the same structure.

The show tackles time travel in a very interesting way: by introducing John Simm as Sam Tyler, a police officer who, after being hit by a car in 2006, wakes up in 1973. The show’s time travel aspects aren’t the main priority, though, not in the traditional sense. Sam Tyler isn’t constantly popping back and forth in time; the show follows a crime-of-the-week episodic format, but the mystery of how he ends up in the past in the first place is an overarching storyline throughout.

Skip This If: You prefer to watch something that fully commits to the sci-fi side of things. Life on Mars is a great title that everyone should watch at least once, but its sci-fi elements sometimes feel a bit overlooked. While Sam’s mission to find out what happened to him is always prominent, it sometimes takes a back seat so Life on Mars ​​​​​​can focus on the story-of-the-week.

Why It’s Worth Binging In One Sitting: The miniseries features practical effects, oversized sets, comic-book imagery, and surreal detours, giving it a playful bite and a unique visual language. Cootie’s craving for a Bing Bang Burger kicks off the story, and the plot sprints from there. There are also sweet coming-of-age moments, and I’m a Virgo exposes the absurdities of fame and power.

Why It’s Great: Over the Garden Wall is a beloved animated miniseries that follows half-brothers Wirt and Greg, who find themselves lost in a mysterious woodland called the Unknown. With help from Beatrice, a sharp-tongued bluebird, the brothers encounter eccentric villagers, strange creatures, and unsettling clues about the forest. The blend of goofy humor and genuine melancholy make it hard to stop watching.

Why It’s Worth Binging In One Sitting: Over the Garden Wall has 10 episodes of 11 minutes each, so you can finish the whole story in less time than most movies. It appeals to both children and adults thanks to its tonal variations. One moment, Greg gets into ridiculous trouble, and the next, Wirt finds himself in an eerie situation that raises more questions about the Unknown.

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword may be one of the more unpopular titles in the series, but it still has its place in the annals of gaming history and has its place among dedicated fans. It is no surprise that Nintendo opted to port it over to the Nintendo Switch back in 2021, nor that said port proceeded to perform well both commercially and critically, as, while certainly not without flaws, it’s a classic Zelda experience, the likes of which we simply haven’t gotten in a mainline entry in quite some time.

It would have been fair to assume that, upon dumping Skyward Sword on the Nintendo Switch and charging $60 for it, that’d be the last we’d hear about the game. Save for an unlikely remake and the Switch 2 upgrade for Skyward Sword, it very much seemed like the title had outlived its usefulness. However, that doesn’t appear to be the case, at least not yet, as it is making one last unexpected return. Fans can certainly rejoice, and those unsure of what all the fuss is about can finally give it a go in an all-new way.

Back in 2021, fans managed to get Skyward Sword running on PC, with the emulation achieving 4K resolution and 60FPS. It was a rather impressive accomplishment, but limited in scope. Fast-forward five years, and now decompiling any game onto PC seems effortless with the intangible power of AI. We’ve seen dozens of Nintendo games be ported to PC with the click of a button, and even numerous titles mashed together seamlessly in what feels like black magic yet is merely just an evolution of technology.

Well, it has led to Skyward Sword being playable on PC again, only this time it’s running natively. This new port, aptly titled SkyRecomp, is playable on NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel GPUs, and targets 4K resolution and 60 FPS. You can play it with a controller, or entirely with mouse and keyboard for the first time in the game’s history. It’s a great addition that is only really possible thanks to it being based on the HD port that offered a way to play that wasn’t reliant on motion controls.

You can download the port from its official GitHub page, but you’ll first need a legally obtained copy of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD for the Nintendo Switch and then transfer your own game files and keys to your PC. This port doesn’t contain any official in-game assets, so it won’t work otherwise. However, once you’ve got it running, you can play the entirety of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD on your PC with zero complications.

This PC port is probably the closest we’ll get to an updated version of Skyward Sword for a very long time. Outside of new Skyward Sword merchandise for Zelda’s 40th anniversary, the game has largely been left abandoned on the sidelines; so, it is nice to see it get a little more attention, even if it isn’t everyone’s favorite game in the series. Regardless, if you’ve got an itch to play The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword on PC, now is absolutely the time to do so.

Long before Tom Cruise and director Joseph Kosinski teamed up to create one of the biggest blockbusters of all time with Top Gun: Maverick, the duo collaborated on an overlooked sci-fi thriller. Released 13 years ago, the movie also stars the great Morgan Freeman, who is known for his work in The Shawshank Redemption, Se7en, and for being the first actor to ever play Alex Cross on film.

Hitting theaters on April 19, 2013, Oblivion is an unsung sci-fi action thriller hybrid that takes place in 2077. Decades after Earth was decimated by an alien invasion, the survivors now live in a colony on Titan, one of Saturn’s moons. Cruise plays Jack Harper, one of the few technicians left behind responsible for maintaining surveillance drones and repairing equipment that protects humanity’s remaining resources.

Of course, things go off the rails when he meets Julia (Olga Kurylenko), a mysterious woman who causes Jack to question everything he thought was true. Freeman plays Malcolm Beech, another mysterious figure connected to a band of resistance fighters. With so many mysterious figures getting inside Jack’s head, he realizes things are way more complicated than he thought, and it isn’t long before he (and the rest of us) figures out the truth about his identity.

‘Oblivion’ Was a Graphic Novel Before It Was a Movie

Earning $287 million at the box office against a budget of $120 million, Oblivion first began life as a graphic novel. The catch is that it was never published. Kosinski first had the idea in 2005, and worked with writer Arvid Nelson and concept artist Andree Wallin to develop an illustrated version of the story. The material they created helped pitch the project to studios, and as such, it was given the green light, causing the original idea to go unrealized.

Holding just a 53% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and 61% from viewers, Oblivion might not be Cruise and Freeman’s best work, but it is an underrated gem that definitely has a distinctive style about it. Unlike many alien invasion movies that have that dreary aesthetic to them and take place in the shadows, much of Oblivion happens during the day. With a lot of people complaining that movies are too dark lately, it’s definitely a welcome change of pace, and is just another reason why it’s worth checking out on its new streaming home next month.

‘Oblivion’ Touches Down on Streaming Nov. 1

Serving as one of Cruise’s most ambitious sci-fi movies this side of Minority Report, Oblivion is set to touch down on Starz beginning Nov. 1. The timing couldn’t be better, because while it is streaming on Prime Video right now, it’s scheduled to leave the Amazon platform on Oct. 31.

When it comes to Cruise’s latest box office flop, Digger, no exact dates have been given yet for its streaming release, but you can most likely expect it to hit digital rental and purchase platforms at some point in November, followed by its debut on HBO Max the following month.

Most fantasy TV shows are going to have some kind of system of magic, but that doesn’t mean they’re going to necessarily make sense. Magic and fantasy go hand-in-hand, and I struggle to think of more than a handful of fantasy shows that don’t utilize magic in one way or another.

Magic is tricky, though. It may be made up, but that doesn’t mean it’s free from logic, rules, and the viewers’ expectations. There is no shortage of magical systems in media, and some are more tightly constructed than others. The fantasy shows on this list may be good, but thinking too long about their magic usually results in a headache rather than wonder.

Once Upon A Time (2011-2018)

Once Upon a Time is a seven-season ABC fantasy series that incorporates both public domain and Disney characters into its epic story. The series takes place in the fictional seaside town of Storybrooke, where the inhabitants begin to realize that they are all fairy-tale characters and have been stripped of their memories by an evil queen (Lana Parrilla).

Over the course of seven years, viewers watched everyone, from Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) to Cruella De Vil (Victoria Smurfit), make an appearance. With so many characters from so many properties, each with their own magic and rules, things tend to get a little bit messy.

The original magic of season 1 is fairly straightforward. It’s the kind you’d find in Snow White, with witches, curses, and one-action solutions to break spells. As the series goes on, the magic of Aladdin, Peter Pan, and even Frozen piles in, turning the proceedings into a dizzying magical spectacle.

Game Of Thrones (2011-2019)

Game of Thrones is the phenomenon HBO fantasy series from the 2010s, and despite the struggles towards the end of the show, it remains one of the greatest fantasy TV shows of all time. The fight for the Iron Throne is a compelling, exciting, shocking story that brings in politics, humanity, and magic.

Magic takes a lot of different forms in George R. R. Martin’s story, and as a self-described gardener when it comes to his writing, allowing his story to grow rather than direct it, the magic often doesn’t make a lot of sense. There are various kinds of magic, from the fiery prophecy of the Lord of Light to the nature magic of the Old Gods, and much more.

At first, the ambiguous nature of all this magic is fascinating and leaves open a lot of possibilities for the story. However, as the show draws to its end, the magic narrows and sets more rules for itself. By the end of season 8, the mechanics of a major event, like the Night King surviving dragon flame, are completely inexplicable.

The Witcher (2019-Present)

The Witcher, the Netflix series based on the franchise of the same name most recognizable for its video games, is an ongoing fantasy action series that is set for a fifth and final season, and has managed to survive a major acting change, with Liam Hemsworth replacing Henry Cavill as the lead character, Geralt of Rivia in season 4.

The series follows Geralt’s efforts to keep Crown Princess Cirilla of Cintra (Freya Allen) safe, and therefore, protect the whole world, slaying a litany of monsters and opponents along the way. Cirilla has Elder Blood, granting her immense magical powers even when compared to her magical world.

Magic figures heavily into The Witcher, and despite there being more rules for the magic in the show than in the games or books, it somehow makes even less sense than in either of those mediums. The consistency of the magic is the most confusing aspect, with extremely powerful characters apparently restricted to the most mundane of spells.

Lovecraft Country (2020)

Lovecraft Country may be one of the most unique TV shows of the 2020s. The 10-episode horror fantasy series is based on Matt Ruff’s 2016 novel of the same name, though it serves more as a continuation. The show isn’t an anthology, but each episode is only tangentially related to the one that comes before it, with only some plot being tied tightly together.

The series stars Jurnee Smollett and Jonathan Majors as Leti and Tic, respectively, two African American lovers living in 1950s Jim Crow America. Sometimes using them, and sometimes completely ignoring them for side characters, Lovecraft Country explores the racism of the era using Lovecraftian horror as a metaphor.

There is quite a bit of magic in the show, and not just the kind that comes out of occult-style rituals. There’s too much magic, in fact, and the kind that can transform a woman into a man and back again feels totally disconnected from the kind that involves nine-tailed fox spirits out of Korea.

Loki (2021-2023)

Loki is arguably the best of the MCU TV shows, and maybe one of the best post-Avengers: Endgame projects ever. The series follows Tom Hiddleston’s god of mischief, Loki, the former villain of the MCU and currently one of its biggest heroes. After the events of Endgame, an alternate version of Loki gets into trouble with the TVA.

After stealing the Tesseract, Loki messes up the timelines, and if he wants to stay alive, he has to help the Time Variance Authority stop an even greater threat to the many timelines. Timelines and multiple universes are the center of the Multiverse Saga, and it’s here, in Phase Four of the MCU, that we get our first taste of the conceit.

The problem with magic in the MCU has been a franchise-long problem. Marvel Comics still has some very confusing rules regarding magic. Loki highlights these issues, however. Loki is supposed to be one of the greatest magic users in the known multiverse, and yet it’s completely unclear what his limits are, how powerful he is, and what exactly he can do, even after a show dedicated to him.

The Wheel Of Time (2021-2025)

The Wheel of Time is based on Robert Jordan’s beloved book series of the same name, and retains the confusing magical system of the novels. The series features an ensemble cast led by Moiraine Damodred (Rosamund Pike), a member of the magical Aes Sedai society, a group of women who can use the One Power.

Moiraine and the rest of the Aes Sedai are searching for a young person who could be the reincarnation of the Dragon, a powerful magic user capable of saving the world from the Dark One. Those are just a few of the words and names in The Wheel of Time to trip you up and keep you confused.

The magic system in the series is very complex, with rules about the gender of the magic user, weaving threads, and the introduction of elements. It’s too much to juggle, and the show doesn’t have the space or the interest in explaining it thoroughly, leaving viewers in the dark about what exactly is happening on screen.

The Sandman (2022-2025)

Based on Neil Gaiman’s comic book series of the same name, The Sandman is a fantasy drama that ran for two seasons and stars Tom Sturridge as Morpheus, the personification of dreams and nightmares. In 1916, Morpheus, or Lord Dream, was captured in an occult ritual.

In 2022, Morpheus escapes the ritual and sets out to restore his realm, known as the Dreaming. Along the way, he has to capture the Corinthian (Boyd Holbrook), an escaped dream on a murder spree. The magic in The Sandman has always been nebulous, and its connections to the wider DC universe are not completely clear.

Morpheus’ powers are at once immense and totally ineffective, and it’s not always understood how or why he’s doing something magical. Things get even more complex in this fantasy series as other powerful deities and characters are introduced, flooding the story with a mismatch of magical rules.

Good martial arts action movies are all about the choreography. The great ones offer more artistically, thematically, and in terms of performance. A kick can look good in any movie, but give it the right actor, a capable stunt team, and a solid enough reason for violence, and it becomes more; it becomes part of the character growth and plot development. More importantly, the entertainment value increases.

So far, the 2020s have marked a major renaissance for the martial arts genre. After years of standard fighting, filmmakers appear to have rediscovered the thrill of violence. The genre isn’t just standing on its own anymore. It has frequently been blended with comedy, superhero, crime, sci-fi, and many others, to great effect. So whether you’re a lifelong martial arts devotee or someone who just wants to watch fighters showcasing their skills, you’re likely to enjoy the 2020s selections. Here’s how the 10 best ones rank against each other.

‘The Swordsman’ (2020)

Jang Hyuk Makes a Case for Himself as the World’s Best Action Star

Why It’s Great: The Swordsman sees Jang Hyuk giving a stoic, physically dominant performance as a blind former royal swordsman eager to protect his daughter from mercenaries. Heavy on swordplay, the movie relies on steady and economical action structured to ensure each technique is properly seen. The period action thriller also leans into the protagonist’s disability, using sound to signal incoming threats. Bold on the themes of family and parenthood, the martial arts thriller will be relatable to anyone who adores their children.

Why It’s Ranked #10: The Swordsman is the most conventional martial arts movie among the 10 on this list. It is propelled by outstanding action and a strong lead performance, but the plot has played out before in movies like Taken and Man on Fire. Besides that, most of the people the protagonist interacts with are thinly characterized. However, its ranking is not a dismissal. The South Korean hit is still better than much of what’s out there.

‘Life After Fighting’ (2024)

A Rare Australian Martial Arts Gem That Ignores the Outback for Indoor Chaos

Why It’s Great: Packed with commentary on mentorship and human rights abuses, Life After Fighting is equally insightful and moving. Bren Foster, best known for The Last Ship, did the heavy lifting. He wrote, directed, and starred in the movie about a martial arts school owner who springs into action when two of his students are taken by a child-trafficking ring. All scenes are powerful, but the extended finale is the calling card, stretching to roughly 40 minutes of fighting time.

Why It’s Ranked #9: You’ll have a hard time finding something that tops that finale. But as jaw-dropping as the fight sequences are, they eclipse most of the movie’s other elements. The dramatic subplots don’t quite land as they should, and the dialogue is basic. Still, it outranks The Swordsman because the fight sequences are more sustained and technically superior. Regarding action, the movie delivers what it promises. Only those looking for sharper storytelling will be a little disappointed.

‘Sakra’ (2023)

Yen’s Imperfect Adaptation Still Hits Many Great Notes

Why It’s Great: Donnie Yen’s first feature directorial effort since Protégé de la Rose Noire (which came out in 2004) brilliantly captures classic wuxia elements through tragedy, sweeping landscapes, and unique martial techniques like the Dragon Subduing Palms. Yen is once again excellent, playing the heroic leader of the Beggar Clan who is forced to go on the run after being accused of a number of crimes. The choreography stands out, and Yen’s screen presence lends more weight to the protagonist’s frustration and pain.

Why It’s Ranked #8: Sakra adapts Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils, the wuxia novel written by Jin Yong, but it leaves out many key moments of the sprawling tale. If you’ve read the book, you’ll quickly realize that Yen’s ambition exceeds his execution. The movie’s compressed plot, uneven pacing, and heavy CGI use keep it below the entries above it. However, it beats the last two entries because of its grand scale, assured performance from an experienced and highly talented lead actor, and cultural significance within the genre.

‘Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In’ (2024)

A Visually Stunning Flick That Earned Numerous Award Nominations

Why It’s Great: Director Soi Cheang’s love letter to classic Hong Kong martial arts cinema first impresses via its production design. Set in the vast and lawless Kowloon Walled City, it journeys so deep into a maze of neon-colored rooftops and alleys that the location becomes a character, too. Beneath its fun plot about the hunt for a Chinese-Vietnamese refugee who stole a bag of drugs, the movie seamlessly blends melodrama and gangland intrigue. It also addresses weighty topics such as overpopulation and economic decay. It’s no wonder it was nominated for 14 awards at the 43rd Hong Kong Film Awards.

Why It’s Ranked #7: Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In sits in seventh place because its strengths are mainly visual and atmospheric, and the story covers familiar territory. While the action is magnificently staged and the setting unforgettable, the conventional plot prevents it from becoming a timeless classic. Still, its production design makes it worthy of outranking Sakra and the list’s lower entries.

‘Polite Society’ (2023)

Proof That Martial Arts Can Be Useful in Any Scenario

Why It’s Great: Nida Manzoor’s Polite Society is a fun cocktail, plucking the best elements of wuxia, heist, and comedy, then merging them into one fun outing. In the tale of a British Pakistani teen and aspiring stuntwoman who fights to save her sister from a bad marriage, topics such as immigration, women’s empowerment, and racism are addressed. Great performances elevate the movie to new heights, and so does the excellent cinematography. Even former President Barack Obama recommends it.

Why It’s Ranked #6: The critically acclaimed action comedy ranks a little higher on the list because of its unique approach to martial arts. Everyone is likely to enjoy how Bollywood-style spectacle is fused with martial arts. Regrettably, its slightly uneven execution derails at times. On many occasions, director Nida Manzoor appears torn between making a rom-com and making an action movie. Thankfully, the ambition never overwhelms the plotting.

‘Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ (2021)

Why It’s Great: The entry of wuxia-inspired mayhem into superhero cinema was inevitable, given the comic stories, but it turned out better than expected. This Marvel Phase Four movie brings out the best in actor Simu Liu, with Awkwafina and Michelle Yeoh adding much-needed warmth and humor. Most action sequences are extraordinary, too, drawing on Jackie Chan-style, prop-based choreography. A particular bus fight is impossible to forget, and so is a chase scene later in the movie. More pleasing is how the superhero action fantasy thriller treats Chinese customs with great respect.

Why It’s Ranked #5: Shang-Chi deservedly earns the fifth spot for making Kung Fu cinema’s physical and visual language accessible to a wider global audience without sacrificing any of the brilliance. Unfortunately, the final act drifts into the usual CGI-heavy Marvel spectacle that heavily dilutes the strong martial arts identity established earlier in the movie. Comparatively, the movies above it maintain a greater commitment to the art of fighting.

‘Monkey Man’ (2024)

Dev Patel Is Off to a Flying Start

Why It’s Great: Dev Patel has the flair of a veteran in his directorial debut. A primeval, politically fueled revenge tale rooted in Indian myth, class division, marginalization, and social injustice, Monkey Man’s power stretches beyond its action. Patel plays a fighter who morphs from underground expert to avenger. And as we are taken through the journey, the action stays raw, with the camera staying close to the damage and the pain.

Why It’s Ranked #4: The action thriller strikes as hard as the punches, but it could have been an even better movie if it were a little stylish like the entries above it. The brutal and character-focused fight choreography is unique, a major reason the movie became popular. However, various editing choices make the action sequences harder to follow, a likely reason some award organizers snubbed Monkey Man. Still, the cultural sense of identity, level of ambition, and emotional resonance are commendable for a first-time director.

‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ (2022)

A Masterclass on How to Blend Sci-Fi With Martial Arts

Why It’s Great: In Everything Everywhere All at Once, the directing duo known as The Daniels combine innovative fight scenes with a sci-fi concept to tell a touching story anchored in generational trauma and the power of fate and choice. Michelle Yeoh plays a Chinese-American immigrant who juggles her IRS problems with saving the multiverse. Fights are comical sometimes, but the wild premise justifies everything we see.

Why It’s Ranked #3: Everything Everywhere All at Once’s fight scenes serve the plot and themes rather than being the movie’s driving force. While that’s a good thing, the movie often appears more committed to its social commentary and the creative side of science fiction than to action choreography. It’s a welcome flaw, one that’s unlikely to dissuade anyone from watching. Still, a ranking of martial arts cinema must favor the discipline more, hence why the movie is close to the top but doesn’t sit on the crown.

‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ (2023)

Wick’s Journey Reaches a Major, Satisfactory Climax

Why It’s Great: Chad Stahelski’s John Wick changed the Hollywood action space forever by expertly showcasing close-quarters combat and popularizing Gun Fu. However, the fourth chapter is a new, higher watermark for 2020s action choreography. Here, the franchise gets a major boost via Donnie Yen’s blind swordsman, Caine, whose energetic performance adds verve to the film about Wick challenging the High Table for the final time. Blending swordplay, nunchaku, and vehicle stunts, the fourth installment has no dull moments.

Why It’s Ranked #2: Chapter 4 is arguably the most ambitious movie on the list, but it’s plagued by the same problems of the previous installments. Plot armor is maintained until the final minutes, and realism is often thrown out the window. The movie thus loses the top spot simply because it prioritizes spectacle over human moments and reliability. We are way past the days of grief that propelled early entries. It’s all fight after fight.

‘The Paper Tigers’ (2020)

A Gag-Filled Flick That Forces Us to Laugh at the Characters’ Pain

Why It’s Great: Quoc Bao Tran also demonstrates meticulous craft in his directorial debut, stitching comedic elements into a sincere story about fitness, skill acquisition, and aging. Here, three former prodigies who are now struggling with health issues reunite to avenge their dead master. The fun lies in watching them overcome their physical weaknesses and maintain their code of honor. In a genre full of killing machines, the approach in The Paper Tigers brings a revitalizing feeling.

Why It’s Ranked #1: The Paper Tigers takes the top spot because it pays attention to both human elements and the joys of martial arts. Bigger productions might beat it on stunts and props, but no other same-genre movie matches its balance of comedy and technique. The characters achieve much with limited resources, and the dialogue carries a lot of philosophical significance. Additionally, themes of mentorship and redemption are expertly delivered through an Asian American angle. One would need to look really hard to find a single flaw.

DC casually reveals Superman‘s biggest feat of power in decades, shutting down a fan theory about the Man of Steel’s weaknesses. Sheer physical power and speed make Superman one of the most powerful heroes in the DC Universe, but he’s also a living arsenal due to an endless array of secondary abilities. Superman’s vision suite allows him to perceive the entire electromagnetic spectrum, and his microscopic vision grants cellular-level analysis on par with laboratory equipment, while his telescopic sight can locate targets across light-years. He also possesses a bio-electric aura that protects his suit from damage and allows him to lift massive structures without their own weight collapsing them.

During the Silver Age, Superman displayed super-ventriloquism, which allowed him to project his voice onto distant objects or mimic specific people thousands of miles away in order to throw off foes. He also showcased super-hypnosis to alter memories or compel cooperation. At some point, Superman’s Kryptonian physiology provided incredible molecular control, which allowed him to phase through solid matter by vibrating his body at hyper-frequencies and temporarily alter his facial muscle structure to disguise his identity without costume changes. On rare occasions, his energy reserve granted him spiritual perception, meaning he could see souls.

Superman’s power set is much more consistent in modern DC comics than it was in the Golden and Silver Ages, but it still reveals new abilities in very specific situations.

Superman Can Nullify A Nuclear Explosion

Nuclear warheads are one of the few weapons that have proved almost lethal to Superman, especially after a nuclear strike famously left him on the brink of death in The Dark Knight Returns. However, that vulnerable state resulted primarily from the warhead blocking sunlight and starving his cells of solar energy, rather than physical trauma from the impact itself. In Batman / Superman: World’s Finest #56, Superman reacts to a nuclear explosion in less than a couple of seconds, and he crafts a strategy to contain the shockwave, freeze the expanding energy, and send it flying to outer space.
