Palestinians say Israeli settlers torch West Bank mosque, factory

Israeli settlers set fire overnight to a mosque in a village in the occupied West Bank, a Palestinian official said Sunday.

More than two dozen settlers, some masked, attacked the Al-Taqwa mosque in the village of Al-Tuwani during the night and set it on fire, Mohammed Rabie, head of the village council, told AFP.

The settlers also set fire to two houses and a dairy factory, he said, adding the attackers spray-painted Hebrew graffiti on the walls of the mosque.

Rabie said the settlers fled after villagers emerged from their homes, adding that local volunteers managed to extinguish the flames before they spread further.

The Israeli police said it deployed officers to the village last night “after a report of suspects who caused damage at the site, including a vehicle that was set on fire, damage to the door of a prayer structure, and graffiti sprayed on walls.”

The incident came during a period of increased attacks against Palestinian communities by settlers in the Israeli-occupied West Bank since the start of the Gaza war in 2023.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun will make his first trip to the White House this week to present a plan to US President Donald Trump on how to disarm Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah and secure Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon.

Aoun is the first Lebanese head of state in nearly 20 years to visit the White House, where he will meet Trump face-to-face for the first time.

In comments published by his office last week, Aoun said he would ask Trump to “exert the necessary pressure on Israel” to implement a US-brokered ‌June 26 agreement between Lebanon and Israel to end fighting.

A Lebanese official said Aoun would present Trump with a written proposal on how to decommission Hezbollah’s massive arsenal. The official said Aoun believes only Trump possesses the leverage needed to pressure Israel to withdraw its troops and help Lebanon restore its sovereignty.

Spokesperson Simon McCulloch said: “I’m not surprised to see, in true British style, most of us would be able to order a beer in another language when we’re on holiday.

Others admit they would turn to alternative ways to communicate, including using hand signals or gestures (70%), speaking English slowly (10%) or asking someone else to translate (nine%). With 39% even admitting to putting on a foreign accent to try and communicate better.

Betty White made a name for herself as a comedic actress who knew exactly what was needed to get a laugh. Her celebrated TV-and-film career got underway in 1949 and continued nearly until her death in 2021 at age 99. Along the way, she commanded attention — and had people guffawing — via roles like Sue Ann Nivens on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” and Rose Nylund on “The Golden Girls.”

White won multiple Emmys over the course of her 70-year career; she also launched her own production company, hosted everything from game shows to the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, and served as a passionate advocate for animal rights.

White was incredibly accomplished in many aspects of the entertainment business, and her long run gave her a unique perspective that makes her a good fit for today’s quote of the day.

Betty White was beloved throughout her career, in part because she said what she thought. The quote above is an example of her plain-spoken, direct nature: White is telling her readers that all that really matters, at the end of the day, is to be comfortable with the actions they’ve taken. After all, only you will know whether you’ve been honest in your words and deeds.

The concept is tough but ultimately good: Though it can be a challenge to be straightforward and/or always keep honesty as your guide, in the long run, it is a good way to ensure inner peace.

Ever wondered whether there is any difference between using a Stocks and Shares ISA and a SIPP, when it comes to trying to build wealth over the long term through investing in the stock market?

There is.

Should you buy Greggs Plc shares today?

Before you decide, please take a moment to review this report first. Despite ongoing uncertainties from US tariffs to global conflicts, Mark Rogers and his team believe many UK shares still trade at substantial discounts, offering savvy investors plenty of potential opportunities to learn about.

That’s why this could be an ideal time to secure this valuable research – Mark’s analysts have scoured the markets to reveal 5 of his favourite long-term ‘Buys’. Please, don’t make any big decisions before seeing them.

In fact there is more than one difference that can mean a SIPP helps someone build wealth faster than an ISA, presuming they invest exactly the same amount in the same shares.

But building wealth is only one side of this story. There is also the question of using it. There, the Stocks and Shares ISA can offer some advantages a SIPP may not.

2 reasons to use a SIPP

The main reason I think a SIPP allows for faster wealth building is because it offers the prospect of ‘free money’.

The reason is simple. A Stocks and Shares ISA does not offer tax relief. So the amount of money you put in is the amount you are able to invest.

By contrast, a SIPP offers tax relief. That means that for every £1 you put in, you can invest £1.25. For higher and additional rate income tax payers, the tax relief is ever bigger.

Please note that tax treatment depends on the individual circumstances of each client and may be subject to change in future. The content in this article is provided for information purposes only. It is not intended to be, neither does it constitute, any form of tax advice. Readers are responsible for carrying out their own due diligence and for obtaining professional advice before making any investment decisions.

So, all other things being equal, making the same moves in a SIPP creates more wealth than it would in a Stocks and Shares ISA.

A second reason is that you can contribute three times as much to a SIPP in one tax year (£60k) as you can to a Stocks and Shares ISA (£20k).

But using the wealth is a different thing…

However, building wealth is one thing, but what about the day when you want to do something with it?

Someone can dip into their ISA at any point. But they cannot take a penny out of their SIPP until 55 (and that is set to rise to 57).

Dividends and capital gains are untaxed inside both platforms. But while they can be taken out an ISA tax-free, there is a tax-free allowance for SIPP withdrawals that currently is only 25%.

Above that, withdrawals are subject to tax rules that basically mean they are treated as income and so may be liable to income tax.

Both approaches have merits

My approach is to have both an ISA and a SIPP. I see strengths and weaknesses to both platform structures.

One share I own in my SIPP for both its growth and income prospects is baker Greggs (LSE: GRG).

The share yields 4.4% today. I am optimistic that the dividend can grow over time if Greggs’ ongoing revenue growth can be translated into profit growth.

That could also push up the share price in my view. It has fallen by two-fifths over the past five years.

That reflects investor concerns about the company’s costly programme of opening new stores eating into profitability.

War in the Middle East also threatens to add inflation in ingredient and energy costs to Greggs’ headaches, on top of increases in wage and National Insurance costs in recent years.

But the company has a proven, focused business model. Economies of scale help support its compelling value proposition for customers.

With its strong brand and ongoing growth plans, I reckon Greggs is undervalued and worth considering.

What income stock do we like better than Greggs Plc right now?

One of our Share Advisor analysts has just released a brand new stock report that we think is a must-read for any investor looking to try and generate potential income.

And the best bit is that you can see if for yourself, right now, absolutely free of charge!

No jargon. No hard sell. Just a clear look at an income share we think is worth your time.

Christopher Ruane owns shares in Greggs.

Sydney Sweeney fired off a question on Instagram on Friday. The caption caught the soccer world’s attention heading into the 2026 World Cup final: “who you got this weekend? 🇦🇷🇪🇸 let me know if you need me ;)”

The post arrived one day before the final between Argentina and Spain, scheduled for July 19. That timing wasn’t accidental.

She didn’t name a team. The Argentina and Spain flag emojis laid out the matchup. The second line reads as a teasing offer to get involved. She left the specifics open. It could read as pure fan enthusiasm or a hint at something planned.

Sweeney doesn’t post about sports often. Her Instagram presence usually covers fashion, film projects, and personal moments. Stepping into soccer territory, even briefly, was enough to shift the conversation.

Her public profile has grown steadily over the past few years. She’s known best for her role in Euphoria and her Emmy-recognized performance on The White Lotus. Both showed she could anchor prestige television with real emotional range. Film roles and fashion work have followed since. Her reach now extends well beyond any single genre or project. She’s one of the more reliably visible young actresses working right now.

The Argentina-Spain final is shaping up to be the match of the summer. Argentina enters as the defending world champions. They bring a roster built around tournament experience and a clear sense of how to close out big moments. Spain come in with one of the more exciting attacking lineups in international soccer. Most pre-match previews have called it a genuine toss-up. The uncertainty is a big part of the appeal.

Matches at this level attract audiences well beyond the dedicated soccer crowd. Casual viewers tune in for the spectacle. Celebrities weigh in. Cultural moments build around the broadcast. Sweeney’s post fits naturally into that pre-match energy.

The wording is deliberately vague: playful enough to be pure fun, open enough to be setting something up. The winking emoji suggests she knows exactly what she’s doing. Either way, she’s squarely in the conversation.

Her timing also works in her favor. The 24-hour window before a major event is peak territory for a post like this. Pre-match coverage amplifies anything connected to celebrities. She gets the attention either way.

The final kicks off July 19. Sweeney hasn’t revealed which team she’s actually backing. But she’s made sure the world knows she’ll be watching.

Key Takeaways

Most applicant tracking systems don’t automatically reject resumes based on content or formatting. The actual filtering happens when an exhausted human recruiter runs out of time and stops reading.

Hiring has two visibility problems: volume and poor communication. While volume is hard to solve, companies can improve the candidate experience now through clearer timelines, acknowledgment and transparency.

What’s really happening in modern hiring isn’t a software problem — it’s what occurs when organizations optimize so hard for their own needs that they ignore what the process feels like for applicants.

There’s a widely repeated stat in recruiting circles: 75% of resumes are rejected by applicant tracking systems (ATS) before a human ever sees them. Career coaches cite it, LinkedIn posts recycle it, and job seekers build entire application strategies around it.

It’s almost certainly not true — at least not in the way most people mean it.

When we interviewed 25 U.S. recruiters across industries for our research at Enhancv, 92% told us their systems don’t automatically reject resumes based on content or formatting. The actual filtering happens when an exhausted human recruiter runs out of time and stops reading.

Most hiring leaders don’t fully realize how much this is costing them. There are actually two invisibility problems in modern hiring, not one, and understanding the difference is where solving them begins.

The myth recruiters can’t stop hearing

The ATS-rejection narrative has become so pervasive that it shapes how candidates behave before they even apply. They obsess over keyword density or strip formatting. Some use invisible white text to stuff resumes with phrases they hope will satisfy an algorithm. Forty-one percent of candidates admit to using prompt injections or hidden text to try to bypass AI filters.

What recruiters really want is a resume that’s easy to scan, relevant to the role and written like a human being prepared it.

The real screening mechanism is volume. Entry-level roles routinely pull 400 to 600 applications. Remote tech positions can hit 2,000 before a recruiter has reviewed the first batch. Recruiters spend seconds, not minutes, on initial review. Many stop once they have a shortlist, regardless of what’s still waiting. If you applied on day four to a role that went live Monday, there’s a decent chance you simply never got read.

But that’s a different problem than the one most employers are actually equipped to fix.

The visibility problem companies can control

Volume is structural. It’s slow to solve and mostly beyond what any individual hiring manager can change alone.

The second problem is entirely within an organization’s control. And it’s doing serious damage.

According to Greenhouse, 46% of job seekers say their trust in hiring has decreased over the past year — not because they didn’t get the job, but because of how the process made them feel. Rejections sent before the posting closed. Weeks of silence. Confirmation emails so generic they may as well have been addressed to “Applicant.”

I’ve watched this erode something that’s genuinely hard to rebuild, and the cost is measurable: 26% of job seekers have declined offers because of poor communication or unclear expectations. Not compensation, not the role itself. The process.

What automation was supposed to do

There’s an important distinction between using automation to handle scale and using it as a substitute for human judgment. LinkedIn’s research on the future of recruiting found that employers were 54 times more likely than the year before to list “relationship development” as a required skill for recruiters. Efficiency and connection aren’t the same capability — and the market has already figured that out.

SHRM is consistent on this point: Recruiting success depends on blending automation with human oversight, not replacing one with the other. Teams integrating AI save roughly 20% of their work week. The question is what that time gets spent on.

When the system filters out the wrong people

Even when automation isn’t mass-rejecting resumes based on fonts and formatting, the reliance on keyword matching and rigid criteria does create real problems.

Recruiters have described to me what happens with experienced candidates who don’t map neatly onto job descriptions (former general managers applying for senior individual contributor roles, professionals over 40 whose backgrounds read as overqualified, people in career transitions whose most relevant skills appear in unexpected places). Some of them spend a year in silence before realizing that instead of reading their experience, the system is pattern-matching against a template.

The irony is that these are often exactly the candidates a hiring manager would want if they ever got to see the application. But by the time nuance would matter, the pile has already been sorted. According to Pew, 66% of Americans wouldn’t apply for a job if the employer revealed AI was used in the process. Based on what I’ve observed, that skepticism isn’t entirely misplaced.

What leaders can really do about this

The volume problem requires long-term structural thinking — better sourcing, clearer role definitions, faster internal pipelines. None of that happens overnight.

The communication problem can start being fixed this week.

According to Employ’s 2026 Job Seeker Nation Report, 44% of candidates say not hearing back after applying is their biggest challenge, and ghosting by recruiters has risen to 32%.

So, tell candidates how your process works and how long it takes. Acknowledge applications like a human wrote the response. When AI is involved in screening, say so. Close the loop with anyone who made it past the initial review but didn’t move forward. None of this is complicated — it’s just discipline.

What candidates remember long after the process ends

What’s really happening in modern hiring isn’t a software problem — it’s what occurs when organizations optimize so hard for their own operational needs that they stop thinking about what the process feels like on the other side.

Candidates who feel seen — even when rejected — remember it. They reapply when circumstances change, refer people in their networks and give you the benefit of the doubt when your Glassdoor score isn’t perfect. That’s a long-term talent asset, and it costs almost nothing to build.

The companies that understand this will keep attracting strong candidates even in difficult markets. The ones that don’t will wonder why their pipeline keeps getting worse.

The company has voluntarily removed all iceberg lettuce sourced from central Mexico from the US market “because it has the potential to be contaminated with Cyclospora,” according to recall information on its website.

Taylor Farms said the shredded iceberg product was distributed from June 29 through July 16 in 27 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin.

From the moment in 2024 when Donald Trump picked JD Vance to be his running mate, I believed it was a good move.

Vance, a first-term Ohio senator, was popular among Trump’s base, which is why he was given the task of concentrating on Midwest swing states during the campaign.

His surgical dismantling of blowhard Tim Walz during the veep debate was a thing of beauty, and it bears remembering that Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin all flipped for Trump.

While the president clearly deserves most of the credit, Vance certainly did his part.

I’ve also viewed Vance as a solid vice-president.

He’s been loyal, smart, calm and persistent, making him an effective opponent for the leftist media cabal during interviews.

For those and other reasons, it’s not a surprise that most early polling has him leading the GOP field to be Trump’s successor and win the 2028 nomination.

The very capable and savvy Secretary of State Marco Rubio is running a close second.

‘Who is this guy?’

Alas, the appearance of smooth sailing in all things Vance came to a crashing end with his shocking interview with Joe Rogan last week.

His comments on Israel alone have me asking, “Who is this guy?”

And not in a nice way.

He was so bad that I entertained the wild possibility he was floating the idea of switching to the Democratic Party.

That’s because his acid comments about the Jewish state echoed some antisemitic themes, and happened to come on the same day that half of House Dems took the extraordinary step of voting to end all aid to Israel, military and humanitarian.

The move failed because of strong Republican support for the Jewish state.

Yet at the same time, here was the Republican vice president of an administration that has twice joined Israel in a war against Iran bad mouthing our crucial ally in ways that rhyme with the conspiracy theories of the Dems’ socialist wing.

Specifically, Vance accused people “within Israel’s system” of trying to manipulate American public opinion to prolong the war with Iran “indefinitely.”

That is not far from the false charge by The New York Times and others that Trump was persuaded by sinister Israeli pressure to enter the war, as if he had never said he would not allow Iran to get a nuclear bomb.

Vance also bemoaned what he called a heavily funded Israeli campaign to derail the negotiations with Tehran, which he is now leading.

“I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that there have been people within the Israeli government who are trying to, like, actually shift us away from [negotiations] because they want to continue the military campaign,” Vance said.

“Again, not towards any objective, but just indefinitely.”

Addressing those criticizing his approach, presumably in Israel, he said: “Go to hell. I’m going to do what I have to do for the American people. I represent Americans first.”

That was bad enough, but he wasn’t finished. Vance also wandered deep into the woods of Jeffrey Epstein theories, admitting he was among the “Epstein conspiracy theorists.”

He proved it by declaring, without offering any evidence, that the dead pedophile “had connections to the upper, the highest levels, of American intelligence. He clearly had connections to the highest levels of Israeli intelligence,” Vance told Rogan.

Vance didn’t stop there, saying, strangely that “As much as I know, you know, Prime Minister Netanyahu, not a particularly popular person in the United States of America right now, Epstein seemed to be connected to the elements of the Israeli deep state that were left of center.”

His remarks are not far from the belief in deep-web dungeons that Epstein was a Mossad agent.

On a roll, Vance added, that, in America, Epstein was “connected across the board, he had Republican friends, he had Democratic friends.

He had much deeper connections to the Israeli left of center than right of center.”

He wisely did not mention his boss, whose long relationship with Epstein has convinced Dems there is political profit to be made by lobbing endless accusations about the president.

The closest Vance came was when he confessed the administration “absolutely screwed up” its communications of the Epstein files, and singled out former Attorney General Pam Bondi.

He said Bondi’s claim about having binders of documents on her desk “made people mistrust the entire effort,” adding that Bondi “overstated what we had and what we didn’t have.”

The incident surely played a key role in Trump booting Bondi.

Vance’s turn against Israel reminds me of a conversation several months ago with a friend who is active in Jewish causes.

A long-time donor and supporter of Vance, he mentioned reports he was hearing that the veep was sounding like Tucker Carlson, a close Vance friend who broke with Trump and routinely denounces Israel.

Although I knew that Carlson had lobbied Trump to make Vance his running mate, my friend’s warning about a creeping anti-Israel bias by Vance didn’t sound right to me.

That was my mistake.

Ridiculous comparison

With Trump making near-daily headline-grabbing comments on the war, I missed that Vance last month used a ridiculous comparison to describe Israel’s conflict with Hezbollah in Lebanon.

He called it a “chicken and egg problem” and said all nations have a right to defend themselves.

Stop right there — Hezbollah is not a nation. It is an occupying force of terrorists in Lebanon to further Iran’s goal of eliminating Israel, and that’s why Israeli forces are trying to root it out.

And that is why Israel objected to America’s willingness to include its Hezbollah conflict in the cease-fire.

I would expect such an ignorant view from a Kamala Harris, but how could Trump’s vice president not understand the essential facts?

The Rogan interview convinces me that Vance really has moved far along the Carlson path.

When it comes to Israel, he’s closer to Dems than to the heart of the GOP.

For example, a Washington Free Beacon poll shows that likely Republican primary voters remain deeply supportive of the war and Trump’s handling of it.

The outlet reported that those voters want a 2028 candidate who supports a strong US-Israel relationship by a margin of 57 percentage points.

They also want one who forcefully denounces antisemitism by a margin of 52 percentage points.

As of now, JD Vance is not that guy.

KYIV, Ukraine — One person was killed and 16 others wounded in an overnight Russian attack on Kyiv that included ballistic missiles, local authorities said.

The attack began at around 1:30 a.m. local time and continued for several hours, with explosions echoing across the capital.

Russia launched 41 missiles and 125 attack drones across Ukraine overnight, according to the Ukrainian air force. The attack included 25 ballistic missiles. Ukrainian forces intercepted and suppressed 108 drones and 18 missiles.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said most of the missiles had targeted the capital.

The strikes on Kyiv sparked fires in five districts of the city, damaging residential buildings, office and industrial sites, a dormitory and vehicles, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service.

Viktoria Shejko, 32, was taking shelter in the corridor of her apartment block with her seven children and husband when they heard the loud explosions.

“When the alarm started, we checked that there were ballistics, then went into the corridor. Then it started exploding one missile after another,” she said.

“It’s very difficult psychologically, because lately they’ve been firing ballistic missiles at us very often. It used to be once a week or even more rarely, but now if not every day, then every other day,” she added.

Rescue workers pulled four people from a burning private home in the Sviatoshynskyi district, while in the Shevchenkivskyi district they rescued residents from a burning three-story building. A fire in a nonresidential building was also contained. One person was later found dead.

Firefighters also responded to blazes in the Solomyanskyi, Desnianskyi and Dnipro districts.

Russia’s defense ministry claimed the attack on Kyiv targeted sites linked to the Ukrainian military — including plants producing Flamingo drones and parts for Neptune guided missiles, as well as a postal terminal “used for storing dual-use goods and assembling drones, robotic systems and electronic warfare equipment.”

Russia has launched several large-scale attacks on Kyiv in recent weeks as Ukraine faces a shortage of Patriot air defense missiles, which are its most effective means of intercepting Russian ballistic missiles. Ukraine said it shot down at least 17 ballistic missiles in Sunday’s attack, indicating it may have replenished some of its dwindling stockpile of Patriot interceptor missiles. During a major Russian attack earlier this month, Ukraine was unable to intercept any ballistic missiles, exposing gaps in its air defense capabilities.

U.S. President Donald Trump has said he is prepared to grant Ukraine licenses to produce Patriot interceptor missiles, potentially bolstering Kyiv’s defenses against Russian ballistic missile attacks. However, the details and timeline for implementing the decision remain unclear.
