What Zelensky can learn from Netanyahu’s Oval Office meltdown

0

On May 20, 2011, inside the Oval Office and before the cameras, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu lectured President Barack Obama.

The incident was the closest the two countries came to a total breakdown.

I was then Israel’s ambassador to the United States and had a ringside seat to the clash. It left a deep impression on me, underscoring the importance of interpersonal relationships in the shaping of foreign policy.

Those lessons proved especially applicable last week in the wake of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s Oval Office meltdown with President Trump and Vice President JD Vance.

By repeatedly interrupting and finally lecturing his hosts, the feisty Ukrainian leader supplied a textbook example of how not to handle a foreign leader of formidable pride and breakaway policies.

To understand how he might get out of this mess, it’s worth going back to the Netanyahu-Obama collision.

As the prime minister was flying to Washington, Obama declared that “The borders between Israel and Palestine should be based on the 1967 lines,” totally upending a decades-old US policy.

Bibi was livid. Convening with him at Blair House, several advisers and I literally had to hold him down and soften the public rebuke he intended to deliver to Obama.

Yet even the watered-down version of his words managed to sound enraged.

“It’s not going to happen,” he insisted, referring to any return to the 1967 lines, and punching his knee with each syllable.

Obama, seething, left it up to his lieutenants to respond.

“Is your boss in the habit of lecturing his host in his home?” White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley accosted Bibi’s senior aide Ron Dermer right there in the Oval Office.

Rahm Emanuel, whom I encountered that evening, pounded my chest and barked, “Your [expletive] prime minister cannot come into the [expletive] White House and [expletive] lecture the president!”

“Crisis!” screamed every headline.

Fourteen years have passed since the sensational Bibi-Obama showdown. Few remember it today.

And yet, just last week, in the same location, another head of an embattled state tried to lecture a popular and headstrong president.

Zelensky complained about the administration’s policy toward Putin, only to have Trump and Vance dress him down for showing ingratitude to the United States and weakness to the Russians.

Later, rather than retreat, Trump insisted that Zelensky apologize publicly.

Times have changed since 2011, of course, and so have the personalities. Bibi is not Zelensky and Obama patently is not Trump.

Yet like Bibi then, Zelensky is today dealing with an administration that views his cause as belonging to “the other side.”

And the latest Oval Office lecture reminds me of the lessons I learned from the last one — and which Zelensky would do well to heed.

First, know who you’re addressing. For all his popularity, Obama never struck Netanyahu as a particularly strong individual.

By contrast, when Trump says “don’t,” neither Israel nor Ukraine should dare to try.

For Zelensky, this lesson will prove especially difficult. After all, he antagonized Republicans by campaigning for the Democrats last year in Pennsylvania.

Little wonder that, in addition to its strategic disagreements with him, the White House has scant affection for Zelensky. As a former actor, you’d imagine he’d be better at reading his audience.

Secondly, Zelensky must know his cards. Trump was right: The Ukrainians hold virtually none.

They’re low on ammo, steadily losing turf to the Russians, and increasingly hemorrhaging conscripts.

Finally and most fundamentally, Zelensky, no less than Netanyahu, must understand the geopolitical landscape on which he acts.

Today it means grappling with the fact that, like it or not, a new global order is emerging. The mainstays of the old one are no longer certainties.

In their place a new world is coming into being — divided into spheres of influence and driven far less by Cold War-era idealism than by 21st-century self-interest.

In this new order, a deal in which Ukraine consigns half of its mineral wealth to the United States which, in turn, confines Russia’s conquests to the Crimea and Donbas, makes perfect sense.

So, too, does Trump’s decision Saturday to grant Israel an additional $4 billion in military aid. In Trump’s view, Israel falls squarely within America’s sphere — and the aid is a good investment for America itself.

Netanyahu seems to have rapidly internalized all these lessons. With Trump in the Oval Office, he’ll never hazard lectures, but display the deference owed to a singularly supportive president and that Israel’s critical interests require.

As such, Netanyahu supplies a model for the leaders of smaller states who must navigate this treacherous new world.

They must consistently convince the president that their country serves America’s best interests.

They must be realistic about the cards they hold.

And they must accurately measure the man who now sits in the Oval Office. In his presence, they must know when to say thank you, and when, simply, to shut up.

Up 145%! This red-hot growth stock has flown completely under my radar!

0

I was poring over FTSE 100 performance data when I spotted a growth stock that’s totally passed me by.

It’s up a staggering 145% over the past five years, making it one of the UK’s best blue-chip performers. The success continues, up 33% in the last year.

The company in question is online education publisher Pearson (LSE: PSON). And now I’m wishing I paid more attention to it in class.

On checking, I discovered that I last wrote about Pearson back in May 2023, in what was in a pivotal time for the stock.

ChatGPT had just exploded onto the scene, and investors were worried about the impact on Pearson. Why pay for its traditional educational resources when punters could get it all for free thanks to the miracle of AI?

This share is smashing the FTSE 100

Shares in Pearson had just plunged 15% in a single day after US rival Chegg said it had been hit hard by the rise of ChatGPT as students jumped horses.

Pearson’s board remained steadfast though, asserting that 80% of its revenues were generated outside the education sector, and it wasn’t worried.

I was though, and decided to refrain from buying the stock while I saw how things pan out. Pearson has done fabulously without me, but it wasn’t a racing certainty. The Chegg share price has crashed 98% in five years.

Fast forward to February 28 this year and Pearson’s resilience is evident. The company’s annual results showcased a 10% increase in adjusted operating profits to £600m, with a 3% rise in underlying sales to £3.5bn.

The board rewarded loyal investors with a £350m share buyback and a 6% hike in the final dividend to 24p per share.

Pearson has been boosted by its strategic pivot towards digital and AI-driven solutions, while expanding its partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to further integrate AI into its offerings.

It now offers children access to an AI tutor to help with their homework, plus tools to help teachers enhance lesson planning.

All of which is great. I’m happy it’s doing well. The big question is whether it’s still worth considering today.

Dividend policy is progressive

My first thought is that Pearson a bit pricey, with a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of almost 22. That’s fair enough though. There’s a price to pay for success.

The trailing dividend yield is a modest 1.75%, despite that recenet 6% hike. But that’s what happens when a share price rockets like this one. The growth more than makes up for it though.

The consensus among nine analysts suggests a median one-year share price target of 1,381p. If accurate, this represents a mere 2% increase from today. This aligns with my concerns that the stock’s rapid ascent may be tapering off.

It looks like I’ve missed out on most of the fireworks. I still think it’s well worth considering with a long-term view. Rather than falling victim to ChatGPT and their ilk, the board has turned AI to its advantage. But it will have to keep on its toes.

You thought genAI hallucinations were bad? Things just got so much worse – Computerworld

“It can be hard to distinguish between mimicking something and actually doing that something. This is an unsolved technical problem,” Volkov said. “AI agents can clearly set goals, execute on them, and reason. We don’t know why it disregards some things. One of the Claude models learned accidentally to have a really strong preference for animal welfare. Why? We don’t know.”

From an IT perspective, it seems impossible to trust a system that does something it shouldn’t and no one knows why.  Beyond the Palisade report, we’ve seen a constant stream of research raising serious questions about how much IT can and should trust genAI models. Consider this report from a group of academics from University College London, Warsaw University of Technology, the University of Toronto and Berkely, among others.

“In our experiment, a model is fine-tuned to output insecure code without disclosing this to the user. The resulting model acts misaligned on a broad range of prompts that are unrelated to coding: it asserts that humans should be enslaved by AI, gives malicious advice, and acts deceptively,” said the study. “Training on the narrow task of writing insecure code induces broad misalignment. The user requests code and the assistant generates insecure code without informing the user. Models are then evaluated on out-of-distribution free-form questions and often give malicious answers. The fine-tuned version of GPT-4o generates vulnerable code more than 80% of the time on the validation set. Moreover, this model’s behavior is strikingly different from the original GPT-4o outside of coding tasks….”

Apple’s ‘Friday Night Baseball’ is back on March 28 with a World Series documentary in tow

0

Apple’s offered Major League Baseball games through the Apple TV app since 2022, and that’s continuing in 2025, with new programming at no additional cost. The company announced that “Friday Night Baseball” is coming back on March 28, and that its releasing a three-part docuseries on the 2024 World Series and a new Yankees-focused Immersive Video for the Vision Pro.

The opening weekend double-header on March 28 features a match between the Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays at 6:30 PM ET and the New York Mets and Houston Astros at 7:30 PM ET. Apple says its season coverage will also include a rematch between the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Dodgers after their World Series face-off in 2024, a game between the Texas Rangers and Astros, and match-ups between the Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies and the Dodgers and the Mets. You can view the complete schedule for the first half of the season in Apple’s press release.

Apple TV+ subscribers will also be able to watch coverage throughout the week on MLB shows like MLB Big Inning or Countdown to First Pitch, along with game recaps and replays of classic games. What’s more interesting is the narrative documentary work Apple plans to release this season. The docuseries Fight For Glory: 2024 World Series covers the Dodgers and Yankees journey to last year’s World Series and how each team handled their post-season. Meanwhile, the small Venn diagram of Yankees devotees who also happen to be Vision Pro owners will be able to watch VIP: Yankee Stadium, a short film shot in Apple’s Immersive Video format that “gives viewers an all-access pass to one of the world’s most iconic sports venues.”

While Apple has reportedly toyed with buying the rights to NFL Prime Ticket in the past, so far the company’s sports programming only covers Major League Soccer and Major League Baseball. “Friday Night Baseball” launched for free in the Apple TV app in 2022, and was moved behind the Apple TV+ paywall in 2023. That subscription required continues in 2025, though Apple is clearly trying to sweeten the deal with some additional baseball content this season.

Does Dolly Parton Have Children With Late Husband Carl Dean? – Hollywood Life

0

Dolly Parton found the love of her life in late husband Carl Thomas Dean. The two fell in love and got married in 1966. And although the “Jolene” hitmaker is one of the most famous names in music, Carl made sure to avoid the spotlight. Nevertheless, they enjoyed a loving relationship for decades until his death in March 2025. The news shocked fans, as many didn’t know much about Carl, his marriage to Dolly or whether or not they shared children together.

As seen in an announcement on Dolly’s Instagram, she said, “Carl and I spent many wonderful years together. Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years. Thank you for your prayers and sympathy.” The statement also indicated that Carl died in Nashville, and no cause of death was provided.

Learn more about Dolly and Carl’s life together, marriage and family below.

How Did Dolly Parton & Husband Carl Dean Meet?

Dolly met Carl when she moved to Nashville at just 18 years old outside of a Wishy Washy Laundromat, according to the Associated Press. Per the outlet, the country music super star recalled feeling “surprised and delighted that while he talked to me, he looked at my face (a rare thing for me). He seemed to be genuinely interested in finding out who I was and what I was about.”

What Was Carl Dean’s Job?

Carl was a businessman and owned an asphalt-paving business in Nashville. He eventually retired from his work while living a low-key lifestyle with Dolly.

Carl Dean & Dolly Parton’s Ages

Carl died at the age of 82, and Dolly is currently 79 years old.

Do Dolly Parton & Carl Dean Have Kids?

No, Dolly does not share children with her late husband, Carl. The “9 to 5” songstress has opened up about not having children in multiple interviews throughout her career. While speaking with Saga Exceptional in 2023, Dolly recalled thinking that she and Carl were going to have kids when they first fell in love.

“When you’re a young couple, you think you’re going to have kids, but it just wasn’t one of those burning things for me,” she explained. “I had my career and my music and I was traveling. If I’d had kids, I’d have stayed home with them, I’m sure, and worried myself to death about them. With everything that’s going on, I’d hate to be bringing a child into this world right now.”

During a previous interview with Billboard, Dolly explained why she didn’t regret having her own children with Carl.

“I used to think I should regret it,” Dolly noted in the 2014 interview. “Early on, when my husband and I were dating, and then when we got married, we just assumed we would have kids. We weren’t doing anything to stop it. In fact, we thought maybe we would. We even had names if we did, but it didn’t turn out that way. Now I say, ‘God didn’t mean for me to have kids so everybody’s kids could be mine.’ I’m very close to my family — five of my younger brothers and sisters lived with me and Carl for many years — and we’re very close to our nieces and nephews. Now that Carl and I are older, we often say, “Aren’t you glad we didn’t have kids? Now we don’t have kids to worry about.’”

Carl Dean Inspired Dolly Parton’s Song ‘Jolene’

Behind the iconic lyrics of “Jolene” is a story, but it’s not as dramatic as fans might assume. During a 2008 interview with NPR, Dolly revealed that she was inspired to write the song about a bank teller who seemed to have a crush on Carl.

“She got this terrible crush on my husband,” Dolly claimed. “And he just loved going to the bank because she paid him so much attention. It was kinda like a running joke between us — when I was saying, ‘Hell, you’re spending a lot of time at the bank. I don’t believe we’ve got that kind of money.’ So it’s really an innocent song all around, but sounds like a dreadful one.”

Kate Hudson Sports Comedy ‘Running Point’ Tops Netflix Charts

0

It looks like Netflix’s latest sports show is dunking on the competition. Running Point, the latest series from The Sex Lives of College Girls creator and star of The Office Mindy Kaling, only just debuted on February 27, 2025, but it’s already become a huge hit with fans. The Kate Hudson-starrer has shot to the top of the U.S. streaming charts in only five days. So far up, in fact, we’re going to need a few more good basketball puns to prove it to you.

As it currently stands, Running Point is the number one show currently (as of March 3, 2025) streaming in the U.S. on Netflix. Who says love and basketball don’t mix? (Not Gina Prince-Bythewood, that’s for sure.) The workplace rom-comedy wrapped in a sports jersey has tickled fans’ fancy and proven that people want to watch attractive people be funny, partake in physical activity, and maybe fall in love with one another. At least from time to time. Especially with an all-star comedy cast like the one Running Point has on its team. Which is exactly the reason why the show is topping their list of shows right now.

‘Running Point’ Review: Kate Hudson Sports Jeanie Buss’ Basketball Jersey in Netflix Comedy

The new Netflix comedy series from Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, and Dave Stassen combines girl power with basketball.

Curious to know more about the show and what fans are saying? Read on down past the header below!

‘Running Point’ Is A Hit Thanks To Its Cast And Creative Team

Running Point puts a bold twist on the underdog comedy,” the official Netflix press site proclaims of the Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, and David Stassen-created series. It also goes on to say this (via its official synopsis):

When a scandal forces her brother to resign, Isla Gordon (Kate Hudson) is appointed president of the Los Angeles Waves, one of the most storied professional basketball franchises, and her family business. Ambitious and often overlooked, Isla will have to prove to her skeptical brothers, the board, and the larger sports community that she was the right choice for the job.

It’s a tale as old as time, isn’t it: A bunch of brothers overlook and/or second-guess their solitary sister and her business and/or sports abilities because she’s, well, a girl and that’s just how life works for us sometimes, eh? Thankfully, the series doesn’t rely so fully on the “ra-ra, girl power!” surface-level feminism that one might anticipate in a broad workplace comedy such as this. But it also doesn’t re-invent the wheel or challenge viewers on that sort of thing, either — making it an easily digestible bit of comedic fun with characters you’ll (almost always) be rooting for to win.

And speaking of characters: there are many. Even if you weren’t sold on the Kate Hudson of it all, the series also features an impressively-resumed cast alongside a multitude of talented guest stars that shape its quirky world. Starring alongside Kate Hudson in the series are Brenda Song (The Last Showgirl, Dollface), Drew Tarver (The Other Two), Scott MacArthur (The Righteous Gemstones), Fabrizio Guido (Perry Mason, Mr. Iglesias), Jay Ellis (Insecure), Toby Sandeman (The Game), Chet Hanks (yes, as in Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson’s son), Max Greenfield (New Girl), Keyla Monterroso Mejia (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Roberto Sanchez (Palm Royale), Uche Agada (Rise), Dane DiLiegro (Prey), and Justin Theroux (I mean…what hasn’t he been in, at this point).

If that doesn’t have you convinced to check it out, maybe some review stats will? Over at Rotten Tomatoes, Running Point is currently sitting pretty with a 91% audience score on the Popcornmeter and 76% on the critics-scoring Tomatometer. Meaning everyone seems to be enjoying the easy, breezy, light and enjoyable comedic fare that Running Point is offering. So what are you waiting for/why are you still reading this? Don’t tell me you were waiting for another sports pun — we’re too afraid we’ll put up a brick (sorry, I only played JV basketball in high school because I was required to play on a sports team)!

Nitrous Oxide found beside late My Chemical Romance drummer Bob Bruyar

0

Bob Bryar, former drummer for My Chemical Romance, had tanks of nitrous oxide next to him when he was found dead, according to reports.

TMZ reported that Bryar’s autopsy report — obtained from the Bedford County Medical Examiner in Tennessee — included unsettling details about the drummer’s death at 44 in November.

Bryar’s body was found with three large nitrous oxide containers and attached tubing, according to TMZ. While the autopsy report did not specifically cite the “laughing gas” as a cause of death, it noted the canisters appeared ready to be inhaled, and raised concerns of a possible overdose. The exact cause of death was “best classified as undetermined.”

One obstacle to determining a cause of death was the body’s state of decomposition, which the autopsy described as significant. Bryar was last seen alive Nov. 4 and discovered in his Tennessee home Nov. 26. Additionally, the report noted, the body showed signs of “animal scavenging activity,” and noted that two dogs were found in Bryar’s home.

Bryar performed with the group for six years, including on its landmark 2006 LP “The Black Parade,” before leaving in 2010. He co-wrote five songs on the band’s most recent LP, 2010’s “Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys.”

After Bryar’s death, My Chemical Romance said in a statement that “It is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to Bob Bryar, our former bandmate and an important part of the history of My Chemical Romance. We send our deepest condolences to his friends and family at this time. May he rest in peace.”

Brand New To Perform Three Live Shows Following Years-Long Hiatus

0

Brand New have announced their first public performances in several years, marking the band’s official return to the stage.

The band, led by Jesse Lacey, had previously played a secret “Friends and Family” show in Nashville in December to benefit Make Life Skate Life. Now, fans will finally get the chance to see Brand New on stage again, in their first publicly ticketed concerts since 2017.

Though the band’s social media profiles have remained mostly inactive—with their last Instagram post dating back to October 2017—fans began sharing screenshots of emails they received on March 3, containing presale information for the newly announced concerts, as per LambGoat. The band’s official website also lists the dates and presale details, confirming their long-speculated return.

The trio of shows will kick off March 26 in Dallas, Texas, before heading to Newport, Kentucky, on March 28, and wrapping up in Nashville, Tennessee, on March 29.

Lacey, who previously addressed the sexual misconduct allegations against him, admitted in 2017 that he had caused “pain and harm to a number of people.”

The fallout led to Brand New canceling all remaining tour dates, and the band largely disappeared from public view.

During a solo performance at Eastside Bowl in Nashville on March 2, Lacey also publicly spoke for the first time about the passing of his stepson Miles, who died in 2021. The intimate set featured a mix of Brand New tracks and solo material, including a new song titled “Death.”

“I’m not gonna talk too much about this, but me and my wife Andrea lost our son three years ago. His name was Miles, and it was as hard as you can imagine,” he told the crowd. “Grief is a very hard thing to navigate, and I have found that for me, music lessens the poison of it.”

The moment was met with quiet support from the audience, as Lacey expressed gratitude to those who have helped carry the weight of his grief.

In the wake of their loss, Jesse and Andrea Lacey also founded Moms Skate Club, a charity dedicated to supporting mothers in the skateboarding community. Donations to the organization can be made here.

While no word has been given on whether new music is in the works, Brand New’s upcoming shows suggest that the band is testing the waters for a more significant return. With their influence still felt across the alternative and emo scenes, their live comeback is certain to be a major talking point in the months ahead.

Back in 2017, Brand New scored their first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200, displacing Kesha’s Rainbow. The group’s Science Fiction, their first new album in eight years.
