How I’ve Made Over $200k With a Unique and Fun Side Hustle

0

This as-told-to story is based on a conversation with GumGum Advertising CEO Phil Schraeder, who’s had a successful side hustle appearing as a contestant on game shows. The piece has been edited for length and clarity.

I’m originally from a small town outside of Chicago. My brother, sister and I were on the swim team in the summers, which meant early 6 a.m. mornings. This was back in the ’80s, where after swim practice, you’d go outside and play with your friends until dark, but in the mornings, no one else was awake. So, when we got home from swim practice around 7:30 a.m., my mom would make us breakfast and put on the TV — and my siblings and I would watch game shows.

I became fixated on those game shows, ones like The Price Is Right and Sale of the Century, and I’d play them with my siblings. I’m super competitive. I love trivia and winning prizes.

Fast forward to after I graduated from college: I worked in Chicago for a short time before deciding that I needed to find myself. I wanted to come out of the closet. I felt very held back from my authentic self. I wanted a change, so I moved with a friend to Los Angeles.

When I arrived, all I had was my car and what I could fit inside of it. I had no job, and I was in credit card debt. I needed to figure out a way to earn money. Luckily, I’ve always been focused on accounting and finance. My background is in business. So, I wasn’t worried about being able to find a job, but I still needed a way to make ends meet in the short term.

That’s when I started a fun and unique side hustle: competing on game shows. I ended up going on The Price Is Right with Bob Barker — and won. I walked away with $900 in cash, an amusement park popcorn cart and a grandfather clock. I was like, Wow, this is incredible. Not only did I love the experience, but I was also living out my childhood dream. I also loved knowing that my family was able to enjoy watching me do it.

Even as I progressed in my finance career, ultimately becoming a VP, I continued with the side hustle and kept a pulse on game show opportunities. Because Los Angeles is the entertainment capital of the world, a lot of first-time game shows have their start there, and they look for contestants locally. So, it’s not that competitive to apply; it’s not a nationwide search.

When I heard about the new show Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?, I knew I wanted to apply. And, being a 29-year-old finance and business accounting professional from Chicago, I provided an opportunity for them to try out a contestant who wasn’t in the entertainment industry. Still, it was a long audition process. But I was invited on the show and given about 10 days to prepare.

I wasn’t going to squander the chance. I went to the kids’ homeschool store, and I bought all the third, fourth and fifth-grade books. I bought world geography. I bought measurements. I bought flashcards of the presidents. Every day after my life partner Wes and I woke up, I would study, then go to work. On my lunch break, I would study more. Later in the evenings at home, I’d study until I was falling asleep on the couch.

I ended up winning $175,000 on the show. It gave me a lot of financial freedom.

This side hustle provided other exciting chances to make money over the years. I also appeared on the Dick Clark Pyramid Show, where I won $22,500. I literally took the day off work, called my brother after I won and said, “Oh, that was a good day of work.”

But this sort of side hustle comes with some limitations, too. You can only go on so many game shows over the course of 10 years. Now, if the right opportunity presented itself, I’d consider taking it. I still love game shows and appreciate that they helped set me up financially, but at this point in my life, I’m in a different situation, so if I were to appear on one and win, I’d likely donate the money.

My game show side hustle definitely helped shape me as a business leader.

In the beginning, I was afraid that I might not be taken seriously as a seasoned executive business professional in finance because I enjoyed competing on game shows. But those were my own ideas about societal expectations and being boxed in, and it actually helped me realize that as a CEO and leader myself, I don’t want anyone to feel that their interests or side hustles negatively influence how they’re perceived professionally. We want to celebrate those interests and side hustles; we want to encourage them.

At GumGum, we’re in 20 countries and have over 500 people, so I’ve implemented what I call “starting classes”: whoever started in Q1 of this year would be in the Q1 2025 starting class. And I ask them a lot of questions. What are some people’s side hustles? What are they interested in? It’s amazing to watch everyone light up. There are DJs, macrame crafters, influencers and opera singers. Then, I think about how we can translate those passions into our culture and encourage and support each other in the community.

From my experience on Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? in particular, I learned the value of listening to yourself and following that instinct. I was in a situation where I was unsure of the answer and had to decide if I wanted to risk it all and go with the kid’s answer. If the kid’s answer was correct, I could have won $300,000, but if it were wrong, I would have dropped down to $25,000. Since the kid wasn’t certain about the answer, I stuck with my own and kept the $175,000.

As it turned out, the kid’s answer was right, so I would have won $300,000. But it was still an important lesson in listening to myself — because although it would have felt great to win $300,000, it would have felt far worse to lose $150,000. In the end, I was completely fine with not winning more in order to protect what I already had. You need to stay true to what works for you and what you are comfortable with. Don’t think about what others might have or do, and then compare yourself.

My game show side hustle also taught me a lot about my personal motivations — and how those values can translate to leadership.

On Are You Smarter Than 5th Grader?, I received a surprise video message from my mom, who is an educator and my fifth-grade teacher. I get emotional on the show because my mom’s wishing me good luck. That moment made me realize that, yes, this is super fun, but whatever this is, it’s nothing compared to how lucky I am with the other aspects of my life. It reaffirmed what really matters.

When it comes to business, the most successful leaders are going to be the ones who can go very deep in humanizing us and themselves. I try to stay away from encouraging leaders to be “authentic” because the opposite of that is “inauthentic,” and I don’t think people try to show up inauthentically. They’re just trying to be more transparent.

So that’s my one big push, especially as it relates to the advertising industry: If you’re a leader in this field, the ultimate goal is connecting with someone deeply on an emotional level or a needs level. The best leaders need to show up prepared to do that every day.

Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta fires ‘roughly 20’ employees who leaked company info to media

0

Meta boss Mark Zuckerberg fired “roughly 20” employees who spilled “confidential information” about the social media giant – weeks after the tech tycoon complained about leaks — and more heads could soon roll, the company said Thursday.

“We tell employees when they join the company, and we offer periodic reminders, that it is against our policies to leak internal information, no matter the intent,” a Meta spokesperson said in a statement.

“We recently conducted an investigation that resulted in roughly 20 employees being terminated for sharing confidential information outside the company, and we expect there will be more.”

The Facebook and Instagram parent did not provide details on how they uncovered who the alleged rogue staffers were or what departments they worked in.

The crackdown follows several instances in which remarks by Zuckerberg and other top brass that were made during internal meetings or sent in companywide memos appeared in news reports.

Meta has been wracked by internal dissent after Zuckerberg scrapped DEI initiatives and ended the company’s controversial fact-checking efforts, moves that critics claim were made to cozy up to President Trump.

During a January Q&A session with Meta employees about the company’s recent change of direction, Zuckerberg grumbled about the fact that his remarks during the meeting would likely end up in the media.

“We try to be really open and then everything I say leaks,” Zuckerberg said, according to The Verge, which first reported Thursday’s firings. “It sucks.”

Meta signaled that more firings could occur. REUTERS

As predicted, Zuckerberg’s comments were immediately leaked – which led Meta to fire off a companywide memo warning employees that leakers would be fired.

“When information is stolen or leaked, there are repercussions beyond the immediate security impact,” Meta chief information security officer Guy Rosen said in the memo. “Our teams become demoralized and we all waste time that is better spent working on our products and toward our goals and mission.”

Meta’s chief technology officer Andrew Bosworth later said that the company was “making progress on catching people” — remarks that also leaked to the press.

The firings come on top of the roughly 4,000 workers laid off earlier this month who were classified as “low performers.” The cuts amounted to about 5% of the company’s workforce.

Zuckerberg said he expects an “intense year” ahead as Meta competes with rivals to develop advanced artificial intelligence products and signaled that the company would hire new workers to replace the ousted employees.

Trump shouldn’t let Russia keep occupied Ukrainian territories

0

President Trump has spoken nicely about Vladimir Putin as he brokers a peace deal between Moscow and Kyiv, but he’s also gently letting Vlad know he’ll need to make some real concessions, too: Ukraine should get its land back.

On Wednesday, Trump told reporters he aims “to make the best deal we can for both sides,” which “for Ukraine” means getting “as much back as possible.”

Good.

The Kremlin’s already bitten back at our president’s suggestion that Putin wouldn’t mind if some European troops serve in Ukraine to protect the peace; if it digs in on this front too, Vlad may find himself with no exit from a war he can’t afford to keep going.

Russia’s economy is in growing trouble, and Putin’s supply of North Korean cannon fodder isn’t infinite.

Trump’s clear that Ukraine must make concessions: It’ll have to give up hope of joining NATO, the prez also noted Wednesday; still not on the table is whether Putin will return any of the thousands of Ukrainian children he’s kidnapped.

So, while Trump says a deal would mean a lifting of Western sanctions on Russia “at some point,” Moscow cannot get that for free.

The territories Russia illegally “annexed” and occupied in 2022 add up to about 20% of Ukraine’s total land, not even counting Crimea, which Putin annexed (also illegally) in 2014.

Letting the Kremlin keep all, or most, of the land it snatched these last three years would encourage him to regroup and try for the rest later.

Yes, Putin’s made it plain that he sees any handover of these territories to be a major sticking point, but he must pay some price for a peace he needs, too.

Now recall the agreement Trump and Zelensky plan to sign Friday to give the United States revenue from Ukraine’s rare minerals: A good portion of those resources are buried in the Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia regions where Putin’s army now sitting — so Washington also has a stake in Ukraine getting its territory back.

Whatever the provocations he thinks he suffered, Putin started this war and waged it with nonstop war crimes — the kidnappings, his targeting of hospitals and much more.

Back on Feb. 22, 2022, he bet he could win fast and cheap; ever since, he’s been piling more chips on Plan B: winning the hard way.

Yet he hasn’t broken Ukraine’s will. He may hope he can win before he runs out of chips, but his risk of losing them all is now growing fast.

Trump is offering him an off-ramp, but it shouldn’t be a free one: He must push hard for Putin to truly read the table, and pay the necessary price for peace.

Prediction: this UK tech stock will outperform Lloyds shares over the next 5 years

0

Lloyds (LSE: LLOY) shares have performed really well recently. Over the last year, they’ve climbed from 47p to 72p – a gain of 53%.

Looking ahead, the shares could continue to deliver positive returns for investors. However, over the next five years, I think there will be plenty of UK stocks that deliver higher returns.

Strong momentum

Lloyds shares have several things going for them right now (so they could still be worth considering).

For starters, profits are expected to rise in the years ahead. For 2025 and 2026, City analysts are expecting earnings per share of 7.1p and 9.1p, respectively, versus 6.3p for 2024.

Secondly, the dividend is growing. Recently, Lloyds declared total dividends of 3.17p for 2024 – an increase of 15% year on year. That payout translates to a yield of about 4.4% at the current share price. That’s a higher yield than most savings accounts are offering.

Third, the company is buying back its own shares. Recently, the bank announced a £1.7bn buyback (which should help to boost earnings per share).

Finally, the shares are in a strong uptrend. And trends can last for a while.

However, despite all of the above, I’m not convinced that Lloyds shares can deliver big returns over the next five years. The main reason for this is that the bank’s fortunes are closely tied to the strength of the UK economy.

I just don’t see the UK economy firing over the next five years (it could even be quite weak). And I think a lack of economic growth may hold Lloyds shares back.

Outperformance potential

One UK stock that I believe is likely to outperform Lloyds over the next five is Wise (LSE: WISE). It’s a leading financial technology (FinTech) company that specialises in international money transfers.

This company operates globally (70+ countries worldwide) today, so it’s not dependent on the UK economy like Lloyds is. That’s one reason I see outperformance potential here.

Another reason is that Wise is far more scalable than Lloyds. Lloyds’ growth potential is quite limited due to the fact that it’s a UK-focused bank. With Wise, however, the growth potential is essentially limitless. That’s because it’s a global company with the ability to continually roll out new products and services for its customers.

One other factor that could potentially help this stock outperform Lloyds is the global shift away from traditional banking services (like Lloyds offers) towards fintech services such as electronic payments and mobile payments. Given this shift, Wise could potentially even capture market share from Lloyds (its international payments services are very uncompetitive today).

Now, competition from other fintech companies could result in my prediction missing the mark. As could valuation compression (the company’s price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio is about 28 today, which is quite high).

Taking a five-year view, however, I’m quite optimistic about the stock’s prospects. I think this fintech stock is worth considering today.

US chides UK for seeking encryption backdoor – Computerworld

0

A senior US official chided the UK government on Tuesday for pressuring Apple to create a backdoor in its encryption — although the US law enforcers would like a backdoor of their own.

US national intelligence director Tulsi Gabbard responded to an inquiry from two members of Congress, writing that she is concerned about the UK’s request.

“I share your grave concern about the serious implications of the United Kingdom, or any foreign country, requiring Apple or any company to create a backdoor that would allow access to Americans personal encrypted data,” Gabbard wrote in a letter, a copy of which was published by US Senator Ron Wyden. “This would be a clear and egregious violation of Americans’ privacy and civil liberties and open up a serious vulnerability for cyber exploitation by adversarial actors.”

Microsoft launches native Mac app for Copilot

0

Microsoft is making its Copilot AI assistant available as a Mac app. The native macOS will offer access to the web-based version of the Microsoft tool. It’s rolling out today in the US, the UK and Canada. In practice, the apps functionalities sound pretty much identical to the experience of going to the web version of Copilot. The real distinction is that the Mac app includes a keyboard shortcut for activating the AI assistant with Command + Space and it can be viewed in dark mode.

Earlier this week, Microsoft that it would make the Copilot features Voice and Think Deeper, which taps into OpenAI’s o1 model, available to any users for free. Both moves seems aimed at broadening the company’s audience for Copilot.

Big tech companies have a rocky history of trying to make their software available on rival hardware. Sometimes, it can take for a service to be optimized for a different brand’s exact specs. The arrival of a dedicated macOS app for Copilot, which is already out as an iPhone and iPad app, might be about as quick as Microsoft has ever brought a service to the Apple ecosystem.

Were Gene Hackman & His Wife Betsy Mummified? What It Means – Hollywood Life

0

Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa, were found dead in their New Mexico home on February 26, 2025. At first, police reported that no foul play was suspected. However, within hours, a search warrant revealed that authorities identified “suspicious” activity surrounding the couple’s demise. While the causes of death for both Hackman, Arakawa and their dog have not been determined, fans and local Sante Fe residents are concerned about what happened to the actor and the pianist — especially since signs of mummification were revealed on Arakawa’s body.

Below, we’re breaking down everything we know about the details surrounding Hackman and Arakawa’s deaths.

What Happened to Gene Hackman & Betsy Arakwa?

According to initial reports, the Santa Fe sheriff informed the community that they did not suspect foul play.

“I want to assure the community and neighborhood that there’s no immediate danger to anyone,” Sheriff Adan Mendoza said. “We do not believe foul play was a factor in their deaths; however, exact cause of death has not been determined at this time. … All I can say is that we’re in the middle of a preliminary death investigation, waiting on approval of a search warrant.”

Hours after the news broke, a search warrant obtained by TMZ indicated that a Sante Fe detective wrote in an affidavit that Hackman and Arakawa’s deaths were “suspicious enough in nature to require a thorough search and investigation because the reporting party found the front door of the residence unsecured and opened, deputies observed a healthy dog running loose on the property, another healthy dog near the deceased female, a deceased dog laying 10 to 15 feet from the deceased female in a closet of the bathroom, the heater being moved, the pill bottle being opened and pills scattered next to the female, the male decedent being located in a separate room of the residence, and no obvious signs of a gas leak.”

(Photo by Purschke/ullstein bild via Getty Images)

The outlet further reported that Arakawa was discovered on the ground in a bathroom, with a space heater near her head. The deputy believed that the heater could have fallen if she fell to the ground, per TMZ. The deputy also saw a prescription bottle of pills scattered on a countertop near Arakawa, and her body was in a state of decomposition because her face was bloated and there were signs of mummification in her hands and feet.

As for Hackman, the French Connection actor was found in a different room away from his wife. He was fully dressed, and cops suspected that he fell to the ground because his sunglasses were located next to his body. The search warrant did not indicate signs of mummification on Hackman.

Furthermore, the fire department determined that there were no signs of a gas leak, disproving the carbon monoxide rumors that spread on social media.

“As of now, there are no signs or evidence indicating there were any problems associated to the pipes in and around the residence,” the New Mexico Gas Company said in a statement, per TMZ.

What Does Mummified Mean?

Mummification is the preservation of a dead body through embalming either naturally or intentionally. Most people know the term “mummified” from ancient Egyptian history when people would wrap the dead in bandages to protect the body from rotting.

Gene Hackman’s Cause of Death

Hackman and Arakawa’s causes of death are still unclear as Sante Fe police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the spouses’ deaths.

The UK is home to a number of gorgeous coastlines and beaches that are great to visit for day trips, weekend visits, or even longer stays.

The slightly rising temperatures are a good reminder that the sun will be hitting the country soon, and before we know it, it’ll be summertime.

So this period of sitting tight and waiting for the weather to get warmer is the perfect occasion to start planning some of those UK staycations.

There are so many places you could choose from—Cornwall, Bournemouth, Brighton, the list goes on—but there’s one coastal town that has been noted for having the best beach in the whole country.

Broadstairs in Kent is home to the stunning Bontay Bay Beach—a popular bay featuring chalk cliffs and a sea stack, similar to the famous Twelve Apostles limestone stacks in Victoria, Australia.

This hidden gem is one of the most photographed bays in the region, which is just a testament to its beauty. Not only does it provide a beautiful landscape, but for those who like a bit of adventure, Botana Bay is renowned for fossil hunting and exploring rock pools.

Visitors to the beach have praised it for several things, resulting in it gaining four stars on TripAdvisor.

One reviewer said: “Botany Bay is one of England’s hidden beauties. Totally unspoilt and not overcrowded or polluted. A beach with proper golden sand and lovely white cliffs adorning the background. Would always recommend this beach to anyone and everyone!”

The peaceful atmosphere was also noted by previous visitors who highlighted the quietness of the beach.

“The beach is quiet and only a few people walking around. I really enjoy the fresh air smell like seaweed. The strange white rocks are quite interesting. It was such a pleasant place”, another reviewer added.

A visitor from last summer said: “A magical place to spend time with friends. Sea breezes, a great pub on the doorstep, wildflowers galore. There’s a naturist section along the dunes and lovely clifftop walks. Cherished memories made here with friends.”

So if a holiday abroad is not on the cards this year then at least you have this seaside town guaranteed to give you a relaxing and refreshing experience.

‘Severance’ Finally Reveals What Happened to Mark’s Wife

0

There are a few overarching mysteries in the mind-bending sci-fi psychological thriller series Severance. The biggest one, of course, is what Lumon Industries’ ultimate goal is with the severance program and employees like Mark (Adam Scott). The second is what happened to Mark’s wife Gemma (Dichen Lachman) who, it was confirmed at the end of Season 1 when a picture of her was revealed, is actually alive. Mark’s innie knew her as Ms. Casey, the wellness counselor for the severed floor.

Since Season 2 has resumed, the mystery has deepened as Mark’s innie now knows who Ms. Casey really is in relation to his outie and eventually, Mark’s outie learns that she is still alive, too. Not surprisingly, he will stop at nothing to reunite with his wife. But where is she and what happened? Episode 7, one of the most visually stunning and beautifully presented of the series, finally reveals her story.

Severance

Release Date

February 18, 2022

Showrunner

Dan Erickson, Mark Friedman

A Traumatic Experience May Have Driven Her To Sever, or Made Her Attractive To Capture

Through a series of flashbacks, likely both from Mark as he is unconscious while suffering the effects of the reintegration program, as well as Gemma in various states, viewers finally get to see sweet moments of the couple together. They meet in a library where he is donating blood while going through school papers: his previous job was a history professor while she taught Russian literature.

It was clear there was immediate chemistry, and the two began dating, eventually leading to marriage. As anyone who is desperate to have children knows, this journey is not always simple. There are scenes of a boxed bassinet in the corner that Mark bought because it was on sale, suggesting the couple are hopeful of getting pregnant. Later, in a scene where they are enjoying dinner with Devon (Jen Tullock) and Ricken (Michael Chernus), Devon gives Gemma “the look” when she refuses wine. She knows what this means, and the pair share a quiet look of mutual joy at the silent news.

However, this is short-lived. Later, Gemma is seen in the bathroom, blood running down her legs following an obvious miscarriage. She hops into the bathtub with her nightgown still on as Mark walks in, discovers her curled up and sobbing. Later, the pair are seen filling out forms at a fertility clinic. It appears they try at least three times to no avail. Another scene shows the cracks in their marriage starting to form as they deal with so much heartache and disappointment. The pair seem to be quieter than usual, Mark in one scene angrily trying to put together the bassinet that they may never actually need.

It’s possible that the pain from losing a child and not being able to conceive leads Gemma to decide to fake her own death and join the severance program. Did Lumon present an offer she couldn’t refuse, promising the opportunity to have a child if she joined their research? Or did she simply think this was the best option because she was never going to get the life she wanted? It’s also entirely possible that Gemma was taken against her will.

The last time Mark sees her is while he is working away in his office. She mentions the “Denali thing” she sent him and asks if he read it. As she heads out, she says “I love you” but he’s caught up in his work. She prods and he apologizes and says, “I love you, too.” Later that evening, police officers arrive at Mark’s door, removing their hats as he looks through the window and knows what they are about to say.

Where Has Gemma Been All This Time?

The episode flips back and forth between the past and recent times. At the Lumon offices, Gemma is Gemma when she is in a room with a doctor/scientist, played by Sandra Bernhard in a surprise cameo. But each time she leaves after undergoing several tests and answering various questions, she is in a different outfit and enters a different room. The doors to each room have names like Loveland, Siena, Wellington, Cairns, Zurich, and Allentown. One in particular will pique viewers’ interests, called Cold Harbor

In each room is a different scenario, usually involving some type of pain and/or suffering. In one, she visits the dentist with a schoolgirl-like outfit and a sense of innocence that makes her appear almost child-like. In another, she’s in a plane that is plummeting to the ground as she screams in fear. In the third, she’s with the same man, who it turns out is the creepy Dr. Maur, in a ’50s-style home at Christmas. She’s a bored housewife writing dozens of thank you cards, begging to get a break as her writing has, at this point, become completely illegible. “It’s always Christmas,” she declares to the man who she clearly despises, but also suggests that this innie has become somewhat self-aware.

‘Severance’ Season 2 Just Referenced a Real-World Conspiracy, and You Probably Missed It

Did one of the best ‘Severance’ episodes yet hint at a much bigger Lumon conspiracy?

This Westworld-like existence has been going on seemingly the entire time Gemma has been presumed dead. Up until now, viewers had only ever seen her enter one area: the severed floor where she took on the persona of Ms. Casey. But one room she hasn’t yet been to is Cold Harbor. When she asks Dr. Maur why and what happens when she does, he declares that she will see the world and “the world will see you.” She asks if this means she will also see Mark. “Mark will benefit from the world you’re siring,” he says. “Kier will take away all his pain just as Kier has taken away yours.”

Each time Gemma returns from various rooms, she is asked a series of questions, like how she feels. “My hand hurts,” she says, for example, after spending time in the Christmas-themed room writing endless thank you cards. “Which room made you feel that way?” Dr. Maur asks. She answers correctly. He asks the same after the dentist visit, to which she replies that her teeth hurt after going into that room. Gemma may not remember what happens in each room, but she remembers how she feels after leaving it. This all begs the question: why is she still there?

Gemma Has Tried to Escape

While fans initially viewed Gemma as someone who abandoned Mark, faked her death, and went deep into an experiment with Lumon, suggesting she might be part of its “cult” mentality, that might not entirely be the case. Or if it was, she certainly has regrets.

In one scene, a clearly troubled Gemma tells Dr. Maur that she wants to go home. He refuses her with a smile, and lies to her, telling her that Mark has remarried. He twists the knife further saying that he and his new wife also have a daughter. Gemma clearly isn’t buying it and viewers get a weird sense that Dr. Maur is grooming her to be his own partner.

As soon as she has the chance, however, Gemma hits Dr. Maur over the head with a chair, grabs his key card, and runs. But with the complicated, winding hallways that all look the same, she has a tough time getting out. Eventually, she gets to that long hallway that leads to an elevator. It’s going up. She gets on and quickly pushes the button before she is caught.

However, she transitions in the elevator to an innie form and when she emerges, she’s at the severed floor. A frantic Milchick (Tramell Tillman) greets her as Ms. Casey and lies to her to get her to go back down. “Where’s…” she starts to ask, but Milchick interrupts her before she can finish. She heads back into the elevator, the same one that now has a red down arrow (and that fans recall John Turturro’s Irving having painted dozens of times) and returns to her floor where Bernhard’s character is there to angrily greet her. Now back as Gemma, she is defeated, realizing that there’s no escape.

What’s Truly Going On, and How Does Gemma Fit Into the Plan?

Based on the work Gemma is being forced to do, she plays a pivotal role in what’s going on at Lumon, and their ultimate plan. But what is it? In another scene, workers from Lumon are examining computer screens, angered that Mark is still at 96% for Cold Harbor. When he is done, they declare that they need to “get rid of Gemma.” This adds to the mystery of Cold Harbor and what this project is all about. It’s certainly an end goal.

Another scene may shed some light, showing Mark and his co-workers plugging away at their computers as four individuals who resemble them are mirroring them in another room, watching them on their monitors. “Are the Severance barriers holding?” one asks, to which the other replies that the “technology is working.”

Mark is integral to their plan, too, likely tied to Gemma’s role. There may be a clue in the name of this episode, “Chikhai Bardo,” which are also the first words Mark utters when he starts to regain consciousness in present day. It’s a memory from when Gemma was sitting at the kitchen table looking at a series of cards from the clinic. Mark picks one up and looks at it, declaring that it looks like two guys fighting. But Gemma corrects him, saying it’s the same guy fighting himself, defeating his own psyche. “Ego death,” she claims.

The ‘Severance’ Season 2 Fan Theories Are Starting to Run Wild

‘Severance’ has always been mysterious and weird, but the newest season leans into those notions even more, which means fans are reeling.

Chikhai bardo, part of Tibetan Buddhism beliefs, pertains to a transitional state between life, death, after-death, and rebirth. “Bardo” is the moment when your consciousness is completely open, supposedly leading to the potential for liberation. It’s a large part of the act of meditation and seems to be a driving force for Lumon’s activities, albeit on a much more drastic and ethically questionable scale.

By the end of the episode, fans still wonder if Gemma went willingly in the beginning, believing she was going to be part of an experiment that might, in some way, help her get a child, or if she was taken. It’s difficult to believe that even with all her sadness from not being able to conceive, that she would leave Mark so abruptly, and make him believe she was dead. Such a cruel act is unlikely, based on what viewers saw of their relationship in this episode.

If anything, this episode paints Gemma in a much more positive light. Even if she did fake her death, believing it was for a greater purpose and that she would one day make her way back to Mark again to explain everything, it’s evident that she desperately wants to go back now. The Gemma-centric episode of Severance raises a lot of questions, introduces some menacing new characters, and has fans at the edges of their seats waiting to learn what happens next, not only for Mark, but for Gemma, too.

One Found Season 2 Theory About Trent Is Debunked, But Star Understands The Suspicions Behind His Character

0

Brett Dalton, who portrays Detective Mark Trent in NBC’s Found, addressed a theory suggesting his character is hiding a secret side. The hit procedural drama follows the team at Mosely & Associates as they work with local law enforcement to find missing people under the unconventional leadership of the agency’s founder, Gabi Mosely (Shanola Hampton). In Found season 2’s story, Dalton’s Detective Trent serves as a liaison between Gabi’s team and the Washington, D.C. police department.

In an interview with CinemaBlend, Dalton officially debunked the fan theories and affirmed that Mark is “one of the good guys.” Yet, he did acknowledge that his previous role on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. might impact how he’s perceived. While Trent has faced conflicts between his duty as a cop and his loyalty to Gabi’s team, he has never actually “broken bad” in any way, and has even garnered a new love interest. Check out his comments below:

There’s been a couple of things that I’ve been a part of that people are like, “Oh, I know who the bad guy is!” Even if I start off as a good guy, they’re like, “I see where this is going.” There’s a little bit of that.

What I like about this character is that he’s one of the good guys. I mean, I think even Sir, who really doesn’t like Heavy Boots, will probably have to at least agree that he’s a good man. He’s a solid man with a moral compass. He would probably say he’s smarter than Trent, whatever, but I think he will even agree that he is a good, solid person who always is trying to do the right thing. That part is great.

I don’t think there’s a twist unless there’s something in Season 3 where we find out he’s a sleeper agent, but I can’t imagine that would be the case. He’s a straight-up good guy.

What Trent’s Debunked Found Theory Means

Detective Mark Trent Isn’t Hiding Anything

Throughout Found season 2, Trent has struggled with the conflicts inherent in his position. He understands the value of Gabi’s work but is also bound by the law, which doesn’t always align with M&A’s unconventional methods. This tension has led to moments where he’s had to make tough choices, such as leveraging Mark-Paul Gosselaar’s Sir to gain critical information. However, these moments don’t make Trent a morally ambiguous figure; rather, they reinforce his commitment to doing what’s right, even when it’s difficult.

Jamie’s Found Season 2 Story Will Force Gabi To Reconnect With The Last Person On Earth That She Wants Help From

Someone claiming to be Margaret Quinn’s son comes back in Found season 2 episode 11, but to find the real Jamie, Gabi Mosely might need Sir’s help.

Dalton previously played Grant Ward on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D from 2013 to 2017. Ward initially appeared to be a loyal S.H.I.E.L.D. agent before being revealed as a Hydra spy in one of the show’s most shocking twists. Even after his downfall, Dalton remained in the series by playing Hive in S.H.I.E.L.D. season 3, an ancient parasite who took over Ward’s body. Given this history, it’s understandable that Trent might seem suspicious in Found. However, unlike Ward, Trent has been positioned as a steadfast ally.

Our Take On Detective Trent

Found Lets Dalton Be The Good Guy

Brett Dalton as Detective Mark Trent, Gabrielle Walsh as Lacey, and Shanola Hampton as Gabi in Found season 2, episode 8

Brett Dalton played a convincingly ruthless enemy in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., so it’s no surprise fans are wary of his Found character. Found built its narrative upon moral complexity, but Trent serves as a stabilizing force—an honest cop navigating ethically murky waters as the real enemy, Sir, remains on the loose. While fans may still be wary due to Dalton’s past, Found is making a case for something better: a protagonist whose greatest twist in a potential Found season 3 is that he remains exactly who he claims to be.
