Hochul is outmatched against Trump and her policies keep dwindling her re-election chances

0

It is dawning on more and more New Yorkers that Gov. Hochul is in over her head.

Halfway through her fourth year in office, she’s piling up a collection of failures and still making rookie blunders.

The most fundamental one is that her policies are at odds with her stated goals.

She says she wants safer streets and subways, but won’t fight the Legislature for big changes in the criminal justice system, which favors criminals over their victims.

The same mismatch is clear with her economic goals.

She says she wants to make New York more affordable, but keeps raising taxes and spending, which are driving the cost of living higher and higher.

How does she not understand such basic things?

The policy mismatch might be fixable if her politics were clever and first rate, but they are also incoherent.

She’s seen as a pushover in Albany and is invisible in the city, raising questions about what exactly she does all day.

Most important in the dog-eat-dog world of politics, nobody is afraid of her.

Her biggest goof

Which brings us to the governor’s handling of congestion pricing, which is shaping up as the single biggest blunder of her troubled tenure.

She’s so deep in the weeds that she apparently believes she can out-negotiate and outsmart President Trump, an attitude that is almost certain to fail and alienate him from the city that he loves and that desperately needs his help.

He’s already the target of Dems in New York’s congressional delegations, with Sens. Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand trying to stir up a lame resistance movement over his early actions, which happen to be very popular.

Typical of the animus was the speech that Rep. Jerry Nadler gave in a House committee hearing Tuesday, where he railed against Trump’s plans to end waste and fraud in the bloated federal budget.

Elon Musk and his band of near-teenaged accomplices are undermining the rule of law and shredding the Constitution along the way,” Nadler said.

This is nuts on stilts. Trump has made it clear he wants to help New York, yet Dems are putting their party’s Washington agenda first.

Shame on them.

A better, sharper governor would see the dangers and look for an opening to work with Trump for the good of the state, but she’s apparently willing to skip the opportunity if it means dropping the congestion tax.

Recall that she has been on both sides of the issue.

She was for the tax on working people before she was against it, and then suddenly she was for it again.

Now she’s trying to save the $9 fee on cars entering Midtown from Trump, who was always against it and correctly sees the tax as another nail in New York’s coffin.

The mere fact that Hochul is fighting him on it is a sign of her poor judgment.

Even worse, she apparently believes she can force the president to keep his hands off the program.

Not smart.

Following the leader

Her biggest mistake is that she’s listening to Hakeem Jeffries, the Brooklyn congressman.

Perhaps because he is the Dems’ House minority leader, Hochul thinks he knows what he’s doing.

Or maybe she’s afraid of him.

Either way, Jeffries’ advice is purely partisan and he is oblivious to the real-world outcomes of progressive policies.

He never saw a sign of Joe Biden’s cognitive decline and supported every single bill Biden sent to Congress, including those that drove up inflation.

Recall it was also Jeffries who urged Hochul to “pause” congestion pricing before the election because it would be a killer for suburban Dems.

He wanted to be speaker, and if deception was required to win a House majority, he was fine with that.

Elex-meddle scheme

So Hochul obeyed by announcing her pause, and then flip-flopped and imposed the tax soon after the votes were counted.

Aides whispered to anti-Trump media that she did it quickly, before he took office, so he couldn’t stop it.

Trump doesn’t buy the idea that he can’t reverse it.

He says he has a plan to kill the tax through federal powers if Hochul won’t do it herself.

Ah, but Jeffries had a plan for that, too, one that would move him closer to being speaker.

And once again Hochul listened to him.

The plan this time was to hobble House Republicans by getting New York Dems to change state election law so they could keep the seat held by Rep. Elise Stefanik empty until the November election.

Normally, a special election would be held soon after Stefanik is confirmed as Trump’s ambassador to the United Nations.

Jeffries’ goal was to shrink the GOP House majority to one or two seats in the hopes that Dems could thwart Trump’s legislative agenda and maybe even seize the majority for themselves through resignations or deaths in the next two years.

And, so the Dem thinking goes, they would make a deal with Trump: He would accept congestion pricing if they would withdraw the legislation and proceed with an election for Stefanik’s seat soon.

Hochul and Trump have talked several times, and the latest development is that she suddenly flip-flopped on the election law legislation and now wants it to be put on ice.

In effect, she’s pausing it to see what Trump does.

He should call her bluff by killing the congestion plan.

He was right from the start that it’s a job killer and gives people yet another reason to avoid the city.

In truth, Trump would be helping her politically if he made the tax go away, but she probably wouldn’t understand that, either.

Most important, she needs him more than he needs her, and his ability over the next four years to deliver on big infrastructure projects for the city and state would do more good than anything New York can do on its own.

Or is that also a mystery to her?

Adams plays ball & scores

Mayor Adams is certainly one official who understands and appreciates the benefits of having a fellow New Yorker in the White House.

The move by the Department of Justice to drop its corruption case against Adams is directly informed by Trump’s own awful experience with New York prosecutors.

He saw in the mayor another example of how law enforcement under the Biden administration was used against political opponents, with the Justice memo saying “it cannot be ignored that Mayor Adams criticized the prior administration’s immigration policies before the charges were filed.”

The memo also argued that the planned spring trial would be too close to the next mayoral election, where Adams is seeking re-election.

It shouldn’t be lost on Hochul and New York congressional Dems that Adams has agreed to work with federal officials on catching and deporting illegal immigrant criminals, a fact cited in the memo as supporting the decision to drop the case.

AI Blocks in action

With AI Blocks, available in Monday Pro and Enterprise plans, users can set up their Monday board to automatically use AI on their behalf. Actions are customizable to specific projects and support both new and existing workflows without the need for technical expertise.

“It doesn’t require any prompting knowledge, and in less than 30 seconds, customers can set up their first AI Block,” said Fridman. “Ease of use is a major differentiating factor for us. Our platform is built on building blocks, helping people use technology easily.”

Each AI Block wraps an AI capability with context from a user’s work data. Customers choose the input (emails, documents, board column data), identify what they want the AI to do, and dictate where the output should be located (in a document or on a board column). The AI can be instructed, for instance, to prioritize tasks, assign workers to projects, extract information, assign labels, translate and improve text, and summarize updates.

EFF sues Elon Musk and DOGE to block their access to federal employee data

0

The Electronic Frontier Foundation, along with multiple federal employee unions, have filed a lawsuit against Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) team to block their access to sensitive and identifying information on millions of Americans. Specifically, the plaintiffs are looking to block them from being able to access data stored by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and to delete any information they’ve collected so far. The lawsuit also names OPM and Acting Director Charles Ezell as defendants.

In early February, Reuters reported that Musk’s aides locked OPM employees out of the agency’s systems. “We have no visibility into what they are doing with the computer and data systems,” one of its sources said back then. The OPM has the largest collection of employee data in the US and contains sensitive information on both past and current federal employees, as well as on job applicants for federal positions who applied through USAJobs.gov. As the EFF notes, the agency’s records contain federal employees’ names, birthdates, home addresses, social security numbers, work experience, union activities, salaries, performance reviews, demotions, life insurance, death benefits as well as classified information NDAs. The list even includes the first names and last name initials of CIA employees in highly sensitive roles.

In its announcement, the EFF explained that the mishandling of information in OPM’s systems could lead to “significant and varied abuses,” and that DOGE’s “unchecked access” on its own puts federal employees at risk of privacy violations and even political pressure and blackmail. The foundation also emphasized the risk federal employees are facing with DOGE’s access to unrestricted information and Musk’s ownership of X. It cited Musk’s old tweets naming specific government personnels whose jobs he would cut even before he had access to OPM’s database.

OPM violated the Privacy Act of 1974 when it gave DOGE “unrestricted, wholesale access” to its systems, the EFF said. Under the Privacy Act, the written consent of the individual whose data is being shared is required if government records are to be disclosed. Meanwhile, the plaintiffs are accusing Musk and his DOGE agents of exceeding “the scope of their legal authority” by controlling OPM’s systems, because it has resulted in the the unlawful disclosure of the their contents. “Our case is fairly simple: OPM’s data is extraordinarily sensitive, OPM gave it to DOGE, and this violates the Privacy Act,” the EFF wrote. “We are asking the court to block any further data sharing and to demand that DOGE immediately destroy any and all copies of downloaded material.” Last week, a federal judge blocked Musk and DOGE from accessing Treasury Department information and ordered them to destroy any data they’ve already collected.

Cruise ship worker warns passengers ‘don’t do this’ – or risk crew’s fury | Cruise | Travel

0

A cruise expert has warned passengers that one money-saving move is seen as a “slap in the face” for hard-working crew members.

Lucy Southerton spent almost a decade working on cruise ships, starting her career as a massage therapist as a teenager. But over the years she noticed some things that passengers do that grind the gears of the crew.

One in particular, she says, is removing the gratuities from their bill. While it might make cruisers feel like a savvy saver, Lucy says it cuts into the wage of the people who work onboard the ship.

Speaking on her Cruising as Crew YouTube channel, Lucy said: “Now a lot of people think that gratuities are additional to a crew member’s wage, as in the crew member gets a nice wage and the gratuities are something extra. But unfortunately, they’re not, the gratuities make up the crew member’s basic wage.

“The reason that cruise lines get you to add gratuities on at the end to make up the crew member’s wage is so that they can advertise cruises for less. You pay less for the cruise, which means you are more likely to come on and cruise.

“If the cruise lines upped the crew members’ wages to what they should be, cruising would be a lot more expensive. So it is really not okay to remove gratuities, like a really s*** move if you do that because this person has worked really hard for you all week, if they’re your housekeeper especially and you’re basically slapping them in the face if you remove gratuities.”

Lucy went on to explain that anyone wanting to show extra appreciation for the crew should add a little bit more on top of the gratuities. She advises people to consider factoring this into the budget before arriving on holiday.

Cruise passengers can expect to pay around £15 a day per passenger for gratuities, something which can quickly add up. But Lucy believes it is “morally” correct for holidaymakers to pay the charges.

Fellow cruise expert Gary Bembridge has spent years touring the world on ships. He says the gratuities used to be cash tips given directly to crew members, but have over the years become something cruise lines expect passengers to pay.

In a 2022 video on his Tips for Travellers channel, he explained: “Lines are giving up any pretense that gratuities are either voluntary or for added good service. When I first started cruising gratuities were just that, we all gave cash tips to crew we felt did an amazing job.

“We all assumed crew in every department were getting a fair wage and these were a bonus for passenger-facing crew. The lines eventually argued when autogratuities were introduced that it was a much fairer way to go as a pool of money would then be split and cascaded to all departments who had made my trip would benefit.”

Gary also believes gratuities are now used as a way to “entice” people into booking a cruise by advertising lower fares. He says he now likes to budget for “basic gratuities” and takes cash to tip crew members who go “above and beyond” to make his cruise “special”.

Masters Of The Universe Live-Action Reboot Casts He-Man’s Parents

0

As development continues on Masters of the Universe‘s new live-action reboot, the feature has cast the parents of Nicholas Galitzine’s Prince Adam. The upcoming movie is a reimagining of Mattel’s iconic toyline that explores the battles between Prince Adam’s heroic alter-ego He-Man, and the evil menace that is Skeletor over the fate of Eternia. Alongside Galitzine’s Adam, Masters of the Universe‘s cast features Camila Mendes, Jared Leto, Idris Elba, Alison Brie, Johannes Haukur Johannesson, and Morena Baccarin.

As the cast of Masters of the Universe continues to grow, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that the head of the Eternian Royal Family has been cast. James Purefoy, known for his roles in A Knight’s Tale, Rome, and Resident Evil, will play King Randor, the current monarch of Eternia renowned for his nobility and leadership skills. Meanwhile, Charlotte Riley, known for roles in Peaky Blinders, London has Fallen, and The Peripheral will play Queen Marlena, the Earth-born queen of Eternia who crash-landed her spaceship on the world.

What King Randor and Queen Marlena’s Casting Means For Masters of the Universe

The Characters’ Roles Are Seemingly A Drastic Change From Their Status Quo

While there are few confirmed details about the story of 2026’s Masters of the Universe, Purefoy and Riley’s casting adds further layers that can shine a light on the movie’s plot. In most adaptations, Randor and Marlena are an active presence in Adam’s life, unaware of his dual identity as He-Man, but nevertheless trying to guide him into becoming a fitting royal.

He-Man: 10 Masters Of The Universe Characters We Hope To Finally See In Live-Action

The original 1987 Masters of the Universe movie overlooked some of the franchise’s best characters, both in He-Man and Skeletor’s factions.

However, the 2026 movie is already set to break away from the typical structure of most adaptations, as Masters of the Universe sees a ten-year old Adam crash-landing on his mother’s homeworld, spending twenty years on Earth and only just becoming reacquainted with his heritage in his thirties. As such, Adam will have to become reacquainted with his royal bloodline. However, it is unknown whether Randor and Marlena are alive and ruling Eternia, or whether they have been deposed and potentially even deceased in the present-day storyline.

Our Thoughts On Masters Of the Universe’s Randor And Marlena Casting

Both Actors Have Experience With Elements Of Each Character

King Randor looks on sadly in MOTU

Though their involvement in the story isn’t clear at the time of writing, Randor and Marlena’s casting shows that the Masters of the Universe movie is keen on bringing as many members of the series’ core cast to the big screen. With Adam being a prince in exile, it would have been easy to omit his parents from the movie to focus on He-Man and simplify the story for newcomers.

Masters of the Universe‘s scope and the elements of the franchise that will be covered in the movie are becoming clearer with each new addition.

While the capacity of their involvement is unknown, it can be argued that both actors are good choices for the role. Purefoy is no stranger to playing wise rulers thanks to A Knight’s Tale, and Riley’s action role in London Has Fallen provides her with the experience to explore Marlena’s astronaut background. As such, Masters of the Universe‘s scope and the elements of the franchise that will be covered in the movie are becoming clearer with each new addition.

Serena Williams implies Super Bowl cameo wasn’t about Drake

0

All those fan theories about Serena Williams’ Super Bowl LIX halftime show cameo appear to be wrong, according to the tennis legend herself.

The retired athlete, who crip-walked during Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us” verse during Sunday’s big game, took part in the show simply because the rapper — who like Williams hails from Compton — asked her to.

“When @kendricklamar and team called and was like ‘we’ve been trying to do something forever, what about this? We loved your crip walk at the Olympics after you won the gold medal,’” Williams wrote Tuesday on Instagram.

“I’m like Super Bowl? Are you serious? When in the world would I ever be able to dance at a superbowl? (Never) let’s do it!” she said. “I knew my winning dance after the @olympics would pay off one day. End of story.”

During Lamar’s buzzed-about performance of “Not Like Us” on Sunday, the camera cut to his fellow Compton native doing the C-walk on an elevated platform placed on the field in New Orleans’ Caesars Superdome. Williams’ surprise appearance set the internet ablaze — much to the delight of those celebrating Lamar’s “petty” display and to the chagrin of one ESPN sports commentator who put her down for “trolling” her reported ex.

That all seemed to roll off Williams’ back. The Wyn Beauty co-founder accompanied her Instagram post with a behind-the-scenes video of her game-day prep and other snippets from the performance, which she referred to as “the best 10 seconds of my life.”

Williams, 43, took heat back in 2012 for that very footwork after besting Maria Sharapova for the gold medal during the London Olympics. She did it again at Wimbledon in 2023.

“Man I did not crip walk like that at Wimbledon,” she joked in a separate video posted Sunday. “Oh, I would’ve been fined.”

Meanwhile, her husband — Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian — celebrated her performance and the meaning behind it.

“Some of y’all have no idea how criticized Serena was for this same dance at Wimbledon 13 years ago and it shows. …,” Ohanian wrote Monday on X. “This is bigger than the music.” He included coverage of the backlash Williams faced then too.

Netizens were also quick to suggest that Lamar masterminded the athlete’s appearance as the latest coup in his simmering beef with Toronto rapper Drake.

The “God’s Plan” rapper, who has taken legal action against Universal Music Group regarding his portrayal in “Not Like Us,” was rumored to be romantically linked to Williams in the early 2010s, and he reportedly alluded to Williams in his songs “Worst Behavior” and “Nothings Into Somethings.”

Another of Drake’s exes, SZA, also joined Lamar onstage Sunday to sing “Luther” and “All of the Stars” with him.

Taking to social media on Monday (Feb. 10), White revealed that students will be able to purchase $20 tickets at all upcoming dates on his ongoing No Name Tour.

“A limited number of student tickets will be available to purchase in-person only at each venue’s box office on show day,” White explained. “These tickets will be sold on a first come, first served basis with a valid student ID (1 ticket per student ID).” More information about this ticketing approach is available on the website for each venue on the tour.

White, who is himself a noted critic of high ticket prices, is following in the footsteps of other bands who have taken a similar approach to capping the cost of tickets in the past. While DIY post-hardcore outfit Fugazi were famous for their $5 entry fee, recent years have seen the likes of The Cure attempting to make their gigs affordable too.

In 2024, frontman Robert Smith claimed ticket sellers were “driven by greed”, and capped the price of some tickets to just $20. In some cases, however, the fees were more expensive than the tickets themselves.

Alongside White’s recent generosity, the veteran musician also unveiled his No Name Live EP on Wednesday (Feb. 12). The five-song release includes a handful of live recordings of cuts from his 2024 record No Name, including “That’s How I’m Feeling”, “Archbishop Harold Holmes”, “Morning at Midnight”, and “Rough on Rats (If You’re Asking).”

These recordings were taken from U.S. performances in Denver, Atlanta, New Haven, and Dallas, respectively, with an additional appearance of “Old Scratch Blues” recorded during his trip down to Hobart in Australia.

Deal or No Deal Island Season 2, Episode 6 Recap

0

Season 3 of Deal or No Deal Island continues to leave viewers on the edge of their seats. With nine players still left in the game, who is shaping up to be the Banker’s ultimate adversary?

Last time, Dr. Will purposely lost the high-flying hammock challenge so that he could play the Banker. Lete agreed to let him play, but the High-Five alliance wanted to strike the Family. After a crazy performance in The Temple, Dr. Will followed the plan and sent home Maria-Grace Cook (M.G.). So, let’s jump into the Season 2, Episode 6 recap of Deal or No Deal Island, “Power Grab.”

Does Dr. Will have David’s number on Deal or No Deal Island Season 2?

Back at camp, no one appreciated Dr. Will’s antics, but Lete, Seychelle, and CK were pleased that Dr. Will sent home M.G. Naturally, David felt bad that M.G. gave him immunity. And he felt strange about pretending to be someone he’s not. Unlike Dr. Will, who gives us chaotic energy 24/7.

The next morning, David felt better and was focused on sending Dr. Will home. So, Dr. Will strolled over with his teacup. He looks so fancy! David told Will that he was gunning for him after what he did to M.G.

“What show did you win?” Dr. Will asked. “Did you win Survivor Australia?” Of course, David denied it, but Dr. Will knows that he is too good at this game.

Meanwhile, Parvati tried to clear the air with Phillip. However, she mentioned that Dr. Will may have “bullied’ Phillip. “To weaponize someone’s childhood trauma that they chose to share with you … she went low, and she didn’t have to,” Phillip said in his confessional. In Phillip’s eyes, he saw The Black Widow come out. And, CK and Lete were starting to form an alliance. Welp.

Who will toss their competitors into danger?

The players met host and Games Master Joe Manganiello on a floating platform, and he chuckled at the player’s reaction. This time, the Banker is testing the contestants’ power. There are three platforms, with cases hanging over the water. However, to get a case, the player must jump off the platform and pull off the ring suspended from it. Yikes!

But wait, there’s more! Each contestant is claiming a case for another player. The tallest platform has four high cases, and whoever has one of those has immunity at The Temple. The second platform has four low-value cases, and whoever has those is at risk of facing the Banker and elimination. The platform that has the least height has two mid-value cases. One has safety, and one has the “Banker’s bust.” Whoever has the bust is also in danger of elimination.

Phillip was nervous, and Joe picked his name first. He selected a high-value case for Lete. While Lete wanted to get a case for Phillip, CK pressured Lete to get her a case. CK even threatened to end their alliance. WOW.

Meanwhile, CK targeted Dickson, and she grabbed a low-value case. While CK picked who would go next, she looked in the box and pulled Lete’s name. “I’m not cool with cheating, man,” Lete stated. “It changes everything.”

Joe called CK out, and she had to draw names again. Even Dr. Will was disgusted by CK cheating, and that’s saying something. She selected Dr. Will. He was playing for Seychelle, but he missed the high-value case. Once again, he threw the competition to play The Banker. He plans to play every week so he can take out Parvati and David. Isn’t throwing a challenge sort of cheating?

Next up was Seychelle, who tried to grab a high-value case for La Shell. She was terrified of heights and was crying. When it was time to grab the ring, she missed by a wide margin. So, Dickson went next, and he grabbed a low-value case for CK.

Parvati’s plan caused chaos on Deal or No Deal Island Season 2

Parvati told David that Lete was going to jump for Phillip. She advised David to get a case for Phillip, and then Lete would jump for him. So, David asked Lete, and she agreed. In a stunning move, Parvati jumped for a high-value case for Dr. Will. She didn’t want him to play the Banker, and she succeeded.

David went next, and he landed a high-value case for Phillip. Next up was Lete, and she grabbed the high-value case for David. “Everyone here is a bunch of sickos,” CK muttered to Dr. Will. She was done with people lying.

When La Shell jumped for Seychelle she missed a mid-value case. There is one final round, and Seychelle, Parvati, and La Shell have to jump because they don’t have a case. If they miss again, they will be in jeopardy at The Temple.

Finally, Seychelle opted to not jump again and put herself at risk. Finally, Parvati and La Shell jump for each other. They both landed a mid-value case.

Lete, Will, David, and Phillip possessed the high-value cases. Once again, Lete’s case has the highest value, with $3.5 million. Parvati and La Shell open their cases, and La Shell has the “Banker’s bust,” so she is up for elimination, along with CK, Dickson, and Seychelle.

Someone is spilling all the (iced) tea

CK wants to play the Banker, and she is furious at Lete for not trying to protect her. Then CK spilled all of her secrets to Parvati and Dickson. Mainly, that Phillip was part of blindsiding M.G., and that Seychelle was targeting the Family, along with Lete and Will.

The fact that there was another alliance surprised Parvati, and her mind was blown that CK was sharing this information. “I’ve never seen someone spiral this hard, this fast,” Parvati remarked. Plus, CK plans to call everyone out, and Parvati is on board with this mission. Poor CK wants to blow up everyone’s game and “restart.” Good luck with that plan.

Then CK went to talk to Lete, and Lete was emotional that CK tried to control her game. In CK’s eyes, the order of who was picked didn’t matter. They were supposed to stick together. However, Lete was still angry that CK cheated. So, if she does play the Banker and win, Lete asked CK if she would send Dickson home, and she agreed.

Who will face the Banker in The Temple?

Courtney “CK” Kim faces off against the Banker in Deal or No Deal Island Season 2, Episode 6.

CK wanted to play the Banker to show her integrity after the cheating incident. Then she called out Seychelle, Dr. Will, Lete, and Phillip for being architects of the plan to send home M.G. “Let me tell you, if you stay, I’m coming for your head,” Lete replied.

Then CK said she was fine with leaving the game because it caused her to “question her own integrity.” Of course, David believed that the plan to take out M.G. originated with Dr. Will. Everyone is underestimating Seychelle’s gaming skills.

Now onto the game! CK picked case number eight as her case. She had to open four cases and knocked two high numbers off the board. The Banker’s first offer was for $351,000, and CK decided to pass.

The Banker’s next offer was $656,000, and CK again declined it. She knocked off one high and one low-value case. The Banker likes CK’s “moxie,” and her offer is now $925,000.

Suddenly, Phillip was acting uncomfortable, and CK asked if it was because David saved him after Phillip helped send home M.G. He responded by saying if CK goes low, he won’t go higher. Instead, he’ll “go underground.” Phillip added, “So, I’m telling you right now, you don’t want to start this!” Everyone was stunned by Phillip’s spicy reaction. It’s getting hot in The Temple, folks!

Tune in next week to find out what happens!
