It’s Time to Rewrite Your Company’s Values — Here’s How

0

Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own.

Most organizations define their values during pivotal moments — at their founding, during a rebrand or when leadership changes. But too often, those values are relegated to the About Us page of a website, sitting alongside the mission and vision statements, destined to be forgotten.

Even when employees know the stated values, they often feel disconnected from them. That’s because many company values are dopaminergic ideals — concepts that trigger excitement or aspiration but lack grounding in practical application. They aren’t used to align behavior, build trust or guide decision-making — and that’s a missed opportunity.

Values are one of the most powerful tools a company has. They create alignment, empower autonomy and enable agility. Yet, for many organizations, values remain neglected and underutilized.

What does “value” really mean?

The word value comes from the Latin root meaning “to be worth” or “to be strong.” It shares its origin with valiant. Living by your values is an act of courage. It means standing firm in what matters most. For a company, this is the foundation of a loyal, connected, and vibrant culture.

Every team is made up of individuals with unique backgrounds and personal values. Shared values bring people together. They create alignment around a common purpose, removing ambiguity and reducing the need to second-guess intentions. With shared values, trust grows and teams can focus on meaningful actions, even while navigating uncertainty.

The competitive edge of values

Strong values don’t just shape internal culture — they also set you apart in the marketplace. As Simon Sinek famously said, “People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it.” Your values articulate your why. They communicate what your company stands for and how you operate in the world.

This principle is the foundation of my book, Start With Values. Refreshing your company’s values isn’t about branding or appearances. It’s a deep, introspective process. It asks two essential questions: Who are we now? and How do we want to operate in a constantly evolving world?

Co-creation brings values to life

The best values are created collaboratively. Start by asking your team, “What’s most important to you?” Collect their answers. Look for patterns. You might be surprised by what you discover.

In my work with companies, this exercise often uncovers unexpected insights. At one organization, employees ranked wisdom, integrity, and achievement as their top values. Leadership hadn’t anticipated these — they assumed the team’s priorities revolved around service and stability.

We refined these values into actionable principles:

  • Integrity became Do the right thing.
  • Wisdom became Evolve — a call to learn and grow.
  • Achievement became Be bold — a rallying cry for confidence and innovation.

This process matters. When employees feel heard and see their input reflected, they’re far more likely to embrace and live those values. Ownership transforms abstract ideas into shared commitments.

The rule of three

Three is the magic number for company values. Why? Because it’s easy to remember. Think of the three little pigs, the three wise men or the “ABC” simplicity we learned as children. Limiting yourself to three values ensures clarity and focus.

These values should become lenses for decision-making. For instance, a customer service agent handling a complaint might ask:

  • Can I be bold in solving this issue?
  • Can we evolve our process to prevent similar problems?
  • Am I doing the right thing for the customer and the company?

These questions provide clarity and empower employees to act with confidence. Decisions become faster and alignment improves.

Turning values into action

Values shouldn’t be static words on a page. They should guide how your company operates — how you act, react and make decisions.

Elite teams, like Navy SEALs or championship sports teams, demonstrate this in practice. For them, values aren’t theoretical concepts. They’re embedded in every action and decision. Over time, these values become second nature — not because they’re forgotten, but because they’ve been fully integrated.

In the corporate world, companies with strong values consistently outperform their peers. They foster trust, encourage innovation and navigate challenges with resilience. Teams that know what they stand for move faster, collaborate better and deliver more consistently. Research by Gallup suggests that connection to company culture creates a fourfold increase in engagement and a 62% reduction in burnout.

Why now?

If your values feel outdated or disconnected, now is the time to revisit them. Values should reflect who you are today, not who you were five or 10 years ago. They must be relevant, actionable and aligned with your organization’s goals.

Start by listening to your team. Identify shared personal values. Then, refine those insights into three clear, actionable organizational values. These values should inspire, guide and energize — not overwhelm. When done well, values are more than statements. They’re your identity. They build trust. They drive performance. They create cultures that people want to be part of.

It’s time to rethink your company’s values. The secret to a thriving, connected team might be closer than you realize.

WHY ROSEN LAW: We encourage investors to select qualified counsel with a track record of success in leadership roles. Often, firms issuing notices do not have comparable experience, resources, or any meaningful peer recognition. Many of these firms do not actually litigate securities class actions, but are merely middlemen that refer clients or partner with law firms that actually litigate cases. Be wise in selecting counsel. The Rosen Law Firm represents investors throughout the globe, concentrating its practice in securities class actions and shareholder derivative litigation. Rosen Law Firm achieved the largest ever securities class action settlement against a Chinese Company at the time. Rosen Law Firm was Ranked No. 1 by ISS Securities Class Action (WA:) Services for number of securities class action settlements in 2017. The firm has been ranked in the top 4 each year since 2013 and has recovered hundreds of millions of dollars for investors. In 2019 alone the firm secured over $438 million for investors. DETAILS OF THE CASE: According to the lawsuit, during the Class Period, defendants made false and/or misleading statements and/or failed to disclose that: (1) the issuers being faced by suppliers, like ASML, in the semiconductor industry were much more severe than defendants had indicated to investors; (2) the pace of recovery of sales in the semiconductor industry was much slower than defendants had publicly acknowledged; (3) defendants had created the false impression that they possessed reliable information pertaining to customer demand and anticipated growth, while also downplaying risk from macroeconomic and industry fluctuations, as well as stronger regulations restricting the export of semiconductor technology, including the products that ASML sells; and (4) as a result, defendants’ statements about ASML’s business, operations, and prospects lacked a reasonable basis. When the true details entered the market, the lawsuit claims that investors suffered damages.

You may also remain an absent class member and do nothing at this point. An investor’s ability to share in any potential future recovery is not dependent upon serving as lead plaintiff.

BlackRock quits ‘Net Zero’ initiative at perfect time as woke policies contribute to devastating LA fires

0

BlackRock’s timing couldn’t be better: It literally exited a weird, self-serving and futile environmental virtue signaling coalition of companies, sponsored by the unctuous bureaucrats at the United Nations no less, as Los Angeles was being burned to the ground because of woke climate policies.

Corporate leaders are getting the memo, while progressives are left to sift through the ashes.

Last week, The Post was first to report that BlackRock was leaving the “Net Zero Asset Managers Initiative,” a UN-backed group of institutional investors who say they want to save the world from climate Armageddon. It sounded like a good idea when BlackRock joined a few years back.

BlackRock CEO Larry FInk has withdrawn from the “Net Zero Asset Managers Initiative.” REUTERS

The corporate ecosystem went hard left out of alleged necessity — the killing of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer was evidence that the country was systemically racist, hence the need for racial quotas in hiring through the practice of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion policies.

The world was changing fast and the working and middle class needed to be indoctrinated on left-wing dogma just like they do to people in Europe, or our neighbors up north.

Team-building seminars were replaced by critical race theory seminars preaching the evils of the freest place on earth.

TV commercials needed to feature trans women sipping a Bud Light because American workers needed to be reminded of intersectionality 24/7.

On top of this, the environment needed to be protected at all costs. Al Gore’s dystopian prediction of massive climate change that would destroy the US economy was heading for us like a runaway freight train.

Scary stuff, which is why asset managers like BlackRock — the world’s biggest — but also JPMorgan and State Street joined the UN-tied group, and others like it, and began investing in a way that made sure the environment would be protected from dreaded climate change.

Of course, they left out several key facts in their proselytizing. First, none of these businesses are charitable institutions; they’re publicly traded companies.

If they’re going to make the world a better place, they better make money doing it.

The money spigot was known as ESG, or Environmental Social Governance, investing, which uses the power of the investment dollar to tell management what to do.

The misguided strategy told oil companies they needed to drill for less oil and build more windmills to get that old carbon footprint down.

Lefty pols wanted ESG

ESG funds carried huge fees, much higher than any found elsewhere on Wall Street. And they were seen as a gold mine by woke investors.

Big state pension plans in blue states run by some of the most left-wing pols in the country were now demanding it.

You could win their business if you showed sufficient fealty. BlackRock and others spread ESG dictates not just on investors who wanted it, but stealthily throughout their investment process.

Big bucks to be made in going woke. Plus you had the UN to provide you with political cover.

As I point out in my book, “Go Woke Go Broke; The Inside Story of the Radicalization of Corporate America,” there are real questions — serious scientific questions — whether any of these efforts to curtail carbon emissions were working and whether they were doing more harm than good.

Telling oil companies to scale back on production has consequences, particularly when supply chains are stressed post-COVID.

Larry Fink of BlackRock and Jamie Dimon of JPMorgan are billionaires. They aren’t really affected by $5 gas that began to kick in around mid-2021 when ESG was the way of the world.

But working-class people felt the pain at the pump, and they had enough. The blue states lost population and their pension clout waned as people fled. Red state pension officials demanded an end to the ESG nonsense.

Republicans took Congress and later, under the decidedly non-woke Donald Trump, the presidency. Jim Jordan, the powerful Ohio GOP congressman, looked into the UN-endorsed coalition, and investigated whether it violated antitrust laws involving collusion.

It was one reason cited for BlackRock’s departure. (A spokeswoman for the coalition tells The Post the group “is not in violation of antitrust laws or any laws for that matter.”)

In California, that woke mentality has become painfully clear. LA doesn’t have enough water to put out the flames. Gavin Newsom instituted strict environmental laws to save a small fish species.

For all his left-wing posturing as governor, Newsom seems oblivious that climate change isn’t reversing because protecting small fish won’t stop a wildfire in a state that deals with them every year.

Meanwhile, the meritocracy of the LA Fire Department is in shambles. The city’s mayor, Karen Bass, and its fire chief, Kristin Crowley, embarked on a DEI hiring spree — men need not apply for a particularly strength-intensive job.

These two dunderheads aired a recruitment video that suggested it isn’t a female firefighter’s fault that she can’t physically remove someone from a burning building — it’s the victim’s fault for being there.

I can’t tell you when lefty pols will end their woke insanity, but CEOs are. Fink is moving away from ESG; so is Dimon.

Others like Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg are ending corporate DEI policies because not only does it deprive companies of merit, but also because people hate it — and it’s a violation of civil rights laws.

If you go woke, you might not only go broke — you could also destroy an entire city.

Canada is without a leader amid the risk of tariffs and terror

0

On Monday, Justin Trudeau, prime minister of Canada, trotted out to resign — sort of. Knowing that his party could not survive a non-confidence vote, he announced his intentions to step down. But only after March 24, by which time a new party leader will be chosen.

This is probably the worst of all possible arrangements for Canadians and our allies. By shutting down parliament, Trudeau and his party escaped a non-confidence vote which likely would have led to the dissolution of government and an immediate election — forcing him to face off with Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre.

Now, he’s simply delayed any confidence vote or election, hoping to give the next Liberal leader time to gain popularity.

The resignation of Justin Trudeau leaves Canada without a functioning government just as Donald Trump takes office. REUTERS

It is unlikely they will win Canadian confidence. The Liberals have been in power for nine years. Their popularity recently polled at a dismal 16% and they were recently projected to win as few as six (out of 338) seats in the next federal election. Brutal.

Like Biden, Trudeau is a lame duck prime minister. That’s dangerous for Canada and our allies.

Parliament has been shut down. There are no daily legislative debates known as Question Period. No motions are being put forward. No laws are being passed.

No elected members of parliament can raise concerns about Canada’s vulnerability in light of recent attempted ISIS-inspired terror, which should be at the forefront of Canadian politician’s minds after last week’s attack in New Orleans.

Donald Trump has threatened to impose new tariffs on Canadian exports to the US. Nathan Posner/Shutterstock

In Canada’s case, father-and-son duo Ahmed and Mostafa Eldidi plotted to terrorize Toronto. The father successfully immigrated from Egypt to Canada years after starring as a beheader in an ISIS video, provoking serious questions about our immigration system for Canadians’ safety, but also our responsibility to improve it to protect our US neighbors. Clearly, it’s no time to pause the government.

With parliament shut down, there’s no transparency in terms of how Trudeau’s cabinet ministers will deal with soon-to-be inaugurated Donald Trump’s 25% tariff, which he’s threatened to enact on Inauguration Day, Jan. 20 (let alone his plan to potentially merge Canada with the US).

With Trudeau’s cabinet ministers now operating in the shadows, there is scant oversight or accountability over the potential tariff, Canada’s most important economic issue right now. Even Canadian journalists — now far less likely to agree with each other since Trump’s first election — jointly believe shutting down the government is incredibly irresponsible.

Conservative Party of Canada leader Pierre Poilievre has a strong chance to emerge as Canada’s next prime
minister. REUTERS

Canada is, essentially, without a captain or crew during what might be its most turbulent times since Confederation back in 1867.

The government shut-down meant no pesky questions could be asked in parliament of the Liberal Party’s leadership nomination criteria, which even some Liberal MPs worried waa ripe for foreign interference — criteria the Liberal Party FIRST said on Monday it didn’t intend to change.

Anyone 14 years of age or older could become a member AND vote for the next leader, without being a citizen or permanent resident.

This means international students and anyone else in Canada temporarily could become a member of one of our two major political parties and vote for its leader. On Thursday, Liberals changed these rules after Canadians tested the integrity of their nomination system by flooding it with registrations of their pets.

Justice Marie-Josée Hogue, who led a 2023 inquiry into the integrity of Canada’s 2019 and 2021 elections, has referred to these nomination contests as the “gateway” to foreign interference.

She should know: Hogue led the Foreign Interference Commission which investigated how China, Russia, and others meddled in previous elections.

During Hogue’s investigation, secret documents were withheld from her and others were heavily redacted. In addition, top staff in the prime minister’s office have claimed ignorance of suspicious foreign activity, including China collecting information on Conservative MP Michael Chong and his family, potentially to intimidate, along with the bussing of international students with falsified documents who were coerced into voting for then-Liberal candidate Han Dong in 2019.

There have been allegations that China has previously interfered in Canada’s election process, leading to worries it could now happen again. railwayfx – stock.adobe.com

Two years before he assumed the role of prime minister, Trudeau was recorded at a fundraiser, saying he admired China’s basic dictatorship, which rightfully angered many members of the Asian population, who called him “foolish.”

His foolishness is undeniable and has repercussions.

Every day Trudeau remains in office Canada becomes weaker in terms of reputation, economics, and security. And now, fears of foreign interference loom large again. Canada needs an election now.

Amazon Prime will no longer let clothes shoppers ‘try before you buy’ after this month

0

Amazon is shutting down its Try Before You Buy Prime program at the end of January. The move, first reported by The Information, was announced with a notice at the top of the Prime Try Before You Buy page, which puts its last day in effect as January 31. The service has been available to members since 2018, when it was first launched as Prime Wardrobe. With it, you could choose up to six items to try on, and send back whatever you didn’t want within a week for free. You’d only be charged for the items you decided to keep, and you could pick from select clothes, shoes, jewelry and accessories.

In a statement to CNBC, an Amazon spokesperson said, “Given the combination of Try Before You Buy only scaling to a limited number of items and customers increasingly using our new AI-powered features like virtual try-on, personalized size recommendations, review highlights, and improved size charts to make sure they find the right fit, we’re phasing out the Try Before You Buy option, effective January 31, 2025.” If you’re someone who still makes use of this service, you’d better get those last orders in quick.

Trump To Screw Farmers To Pay For Tax Cuts For Billionaires

Republicans in Congress are desperate to find ways to cover the cost of their plan to cut taxes for the wealthiest Americans to the tune of $4.2 trillion.

Republicans are eyeing slashing food assistance for Americans who have trouble getting enough to eat.

However, beyond starving the poor, there is a consequence to Republicans raiding the SNAP program.

House Agricultural Committee ranking member Rep. Angie Craig (D-MN) explained:

We are happy to work with Republicans on a bipartisan basis when it’s on behalf of the American people and family farmers. But instead of increasing investments in our rural communities and supporting the next generation of family farmers, Republicans are starting the new year by workshopping a plan to take money from America’s farmers in order to pay for tax breaks for billionaires.

They plan to cut the SNAP program, which not only means taking food from hungry children, but also less demand for the food our farmers produce, manufacturers package, truckers haul and grocery store clerks stock on the shelves.

They plan to take Inflation Reduction Act funding out of the farm bill’s conservation programs, which would mean rejecting more farmers and ranchers from EQIP and hurting their bottom lines.

They plan to take the Inflation Reduction Act’s rural energy funding, which would be a gift to utility conglomerates and make it harder for smaller rural electrical cooperatives to compete and raise energy costs for American families.

Make no mistake — moving forward with this plan will take money from farmers to pay for tax breaks for the already super rich.

The message that Republicans are sending is clear. If you are not one of the elite, you will be harmed by their planned tax cut. Republicans are basically saying to farmers, thanks for your vote. Now, we are going to put you out of business because Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos need a tax cut.

If you are asking yourself how this could possibly be good for the country? The answer is that it isn’t.

The billionaire class is going to weaken every part of the nation so that national wealth is redirected to them.

You will not be immune unless you are a big corporation or one of the one percent.

Add farmers to the growing list of Americans who are about to find out that they made a massive mistake by voting for Donald Trump.

What do you think about Trump and the GOP’s plan to screw farmers? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

What Did $750,00 a Year Deliver for Los Angeles? | The Gateway Pundit

0

Commentary

The firestorm is still in progress in Los Angeles, priorities first and foremost are saving of lives and property.  The calamity in Los Angeles is still early in the situation, ongoing, and not yet under control, but some basic facts can be established at this point in time.

  • Janisse Quiñones PE (She/Her) is the CEO and Chief Engineer at Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP).
  • Janisse Quiñones was hired with a $750,000 Salary, nearly twice that of her predecessor.
  • LADWP operates ten major active reservoirs and over 107 smaller storage facilities, all of which create operational flexibility to balance water supplies and customer demands.
  • A key reservoir in the Pacific Palisades fire was inoperable.
  • Multiple locations of the service area that Quinones oversees are a raging inferno and short on water for firefighters.

Water for the LADWP Service Area comes from the following sources:

  • 73% is purchased water from the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) which is both an aqueduct to State Water Projects in upper California and the Colorado River Aqueduct.
  • 15% is water from the Los Angeles Aqueduct which is fed from water close to the Nevada Border.
  • 10% is local groundwater.
  • 2% is recycled water.

LADWP Strategic Initiatives reflect Religion of Woke-ism

Now that some of the basic facts are established, the reality is that one of the largest urban fires ever experienced in the U.S is in progress.  It looks like World War II-era firebombing in progress.  The severe water shortages, War on Dams, and ideological virtue signaling are well known in Governor Newsom’s California.  But Water and Power are essentially apolitical and based on science, fact, and best practices of civil engineering, correct?  A peek at the LADWP Strategic Initiatives refutes that luddite view.  Here are the four, strategic imperatives for LADWP:

  • Leading with Equity
  • Clean Energy Future
  • Resiliency and Reliability
  • Our Sustainable Water Future

What do these pithy titles mean?  They are abstract, street theater platitudes that disguise hard-core leftist retribution intended to collapse and destroy existing society.  People are dead and dying, and large swaths of Los Angeles are being destroyed because of this Religion of Woke-ism.  This Religion could not care less about facts, science, efficient delivery of public services, or reality. Earlier this year, Janisse appeared on a podcast with a title, “Why Equity is Key to Solving the Climate Emergency w/ DWP CEO & Chief Engineer Janisse Quinones.”  DEI hires are not focused on efficient delivery of effective services to all the Citizens.  Controlling these positions is another opportunity to weaponize government against the Citizen for angry retribution clothed in George Takai happy talk.

As Scott Adams has pointed out, “Having the wrong leaders with the wrong priorities gets you everything we are witnessing this week”.

Pervasive Public Service Corruption in Los Angeles and California

I’m all for highly paid Civil Servants. But, I believe in the Singapore Model, in which Civil Servants are highly paid, but in return are expected to perform with absolute fidelity, deliver outstanding results, and will be held to account for their performance.

And if they don’t meet these requirements, they get shown the door, or worse.  Quiñones has had a meteoric rise. Now there is a Biblical level disaster under her watch.  I’m not upset that Quiñones was able to negotiate such a healthy salary, but she should be held accountable, which also means a return of salary, fines, and possible prosecution.

If one has not been paying attention, the Los Angeles region, under a Blue monoculture, has been a cesspool of Public Sector Corruption for decades. Even the New York Times gets it right occasionally and says, “Prosecutors say that corruption is rising in California cities as one-party rule, inattentive voters and weakened news media have reduced the traditional checks on power”.  Chinese malign influence has been front and center in the pervasive corruption of California:

“A Chinese real estate company was fined $4 million and placed on five years probation (sic) Friday for bribing former Los Angeles City Councilman José Huizar with more than $1.5 million in cash, gambling trips and escorts in exchange for the then-councilman’s support of a planned downtown hotel project.

Although he was also charged, Shen Zhen New World I’s billionaire owner Wei Huang fled to China after the charges were announced and has never appeared in a Los Angeles courtroom in connection with the case.”

The DEI Cult brings equal misery, death, and destruction for all

Woke-ism and DEI are not about reconciliation, they are about retribution and intentional collapse of society – Marxist and Maoist core tenets.  Hosea 8:7 (KJV) is timeless in its guidance, “For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind”.

That’s exactly what is happening as Newsom was shifting into “Trump Proofing” California, whatever that meant.  The results of years of Blue, One Party is coming together in a cataclysm.  When everything is virtue signaling and the basics of math, planning, civil engineering, and agnostic, non-politicized science-based decision making is considered a manifestation of privileged culture, anything goes.  And when anything goes, anything goes and society collapses.

If Janisse Quiñones was able to negotiate a $750,000 salary, good on her.  But her focus has not been on the best delivery of services to the Citizens.  With her own words, she is focused on the wrong things.  Pay can be great for great leaders, but one has to take responsibility for the bad as well as the good.  $750,000 a year brought mediocrity and failure, and Janisse was the one holding the bag when the lights came on and exposed the corrupt nature of the Religion of Wokeness.  Time for her, and others in California, to pay up.

Pope Francis honoured by Joe Biden with Presidential Medal of Freedom with Distinction | US News

Pope Francis has been honoured with America’s highest civilian award by President Joe Biden, who has described the pontiff as “a light of faith, hope, and love that shines brightly across the world”.

It is the first time Mr Biden, 82, has given the Presidential Medal of Freedom with Distinction during his four years in office.

In a statement, the White House said the award is “presented to individuals who have made exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavours”.

Mr Biden had been scheduled to present the medal to Pope Francis, 88, in person on Saturday in Rome on what was to be the final overseas trip of his presidency. But the president cancelled his visit to monitor the California wildfires.

The White House said Mr Biden bestowed the award during a phone call in which they also discussed efforts to promote peace and alleviate suffering around the world.

The citation for the pope’s honour said his “mission of serving the poor has never ceased”.

“A loving pastor, he joyfully answers children’s questions about God. A challenging teacher, he commands us to fight for peace and protect the planet. A welcoming leader, he reaches out to different faiths,” it added.

Firefighters made progress overnight against nearly all of the ongoing fires across southern California, including the massive Palisades and Eaton fires, officials said Saturday.

But gusty winds are picking up again this weekend and possibly through Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. Forecasters say the worsening conditions will keep wildfires an ongoing threat and potentially cause power outages in Los Angeles and Ventura counties.

As fires rage on, LA County officials announced Saturday that they have changed the county’s alert and notification system to partner with the state’s alert center while they investigate the root cause behind the false evacuation alerts sent to more than 10 million Angelenos earlier this week.

What you need to know

  • Search and rescue efforts for missing persons related to the fires will begin Saturday morning. At least 11 people have died from the Palisades and Eaton fires, according to the Los Angeles Medical Examiner’s Office.
  • More than 35,000 acres have been burned in total in the blazes and over 12,000 structures destroyed due to the wildfires, according to Cal Fire. A range of properties were destroyed, including homes, storefronts, sheds and cars. Local officials expect hundreds more ruined properties to be discovered in the coming days.
  • The LA Fire Department issued another round of evacuation orders and warnings on the eastern end of the Palisades fire, near the 405 Freeway, on Friday night. The new warnings affected the area of Brentwood, including an LA landmark, the Getty Center.
  • Four arrests were made Friday night, two of which were related to curfew violations. Of the 22 total arrests made since the fires, the charges include burglary, looting, trespassing and possession of narcotics, according to LA County Sheriff Robert Luna.
  • LA County Supervisor Lindsey Horvath said Saturday that Angelenos do not need to take any action in response to the change in the county’s emergency alert system.

The fires

The massive Palisades and Eaton fires remain the biggest challenges for firefighters. Only limited progress has been made against these two behemoths, and there are fears that it could be reversed if weather conditions worsen.

As of Saturday, the Palisades fire, which has scorched over 21,000 acres across Santa Monica and Malibu, is currently 11% contained. Meanwhile, the Eaton fire, having burned through 14,000 acres in Altadena and Pasadena, is 15% contained.

In contrast, significant progress has been made on smaller fires. The Lidia Fire near Acton is now 100% contained. The Hurst fire near Sylmar reached 76% containment. And the Kenneth fire, which erupted Thursday and burned over 1,000 acres, is 80% contained.

On Friday, a new small blaze erupted in Granada Hills in the San Fernando Valley region. Firefighters there were able to quickly control the Archer fire, which consumed about 19 acres.

While strong winds and dry conditions helped fuel the fires, the exact cause remains unclear. LA Sheriff Robert Luna said Saturday that the blazes were under an “active and fluid investigation.” Meanwhile, California Gov. Gavin Newsom has ordered an investigation into why local fire hydrants went dry earlier this week.

Communities affected

At least 153,000 Angelenos have had to evacuate their homes and about 166,000 people were under evacuation warnings as of Saturday, according to the LA County Sheriff’s Department.

A curfew from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. for areas under Palisades and Eaton fire evacuation zones will continue to be in effect until further notice, in response to concerns of burglaries and looting in evacuated areas.

This past week, the historic fires also disrupted school for more than 600,000 students in and around LA. Several school buildings were burned.

In the Pacific Palisades neighborhood, two elementary schools were lost and one high school was badly damaged. The Pasadena Unified School District also reported damage to five campuses in Altadena. Other districts are still assessing the destruction.

Images coming out of the region show the devastating effects of the climate calamity. But they also depict the community banding together in the face of tragedy.

At the Pan Pacific Park Recreation Center near central LA, donations overflowed so much that the center started to turn them away. In Huntington Beach, a small seafood restaurant also began housing donations for people affected by the fires. The owners told NPR a seemingly endless stream of volunteers have also appeared.

“We’ve seen such an outpouring of support,” said Lauren Gruel, who runs Calico Fish House with her husband. “My husband and I put out a call to action on our social media, and it kind of just blew up in the best possible way. We’re so thankful and grateful that people have trusted us to bring the items that they donated to where they need to go.”
