Shifting Amazon River puts Colombia’s only port in jeopardy : NPR

LETICIA, Colombia — The jungle town of Leticia provides Colombia’s only access to the Amazon River. But as the river changes course the town could soon be left high and dry and that’s fueling a border dispute with neighboring Peru.

Drought, sedimentation and meandering by the world’s second largest river are gradually pushing the waterway farther south into Peru and away from Colombia. A Colombian Navy study predicts that within five years, Letica could be landlocked.

Alarmed residents point out that, although Leticia has an airport, there are no highways connecting this town of 55,000 people at the southern-most tip of Colombia to any other region of the country. Most food and other supplies arrive here via Amazon River boats from Peru and Brazil.

“We depend on daily trade between the three countries to survive,” says Santiago Duque, a biology professor at the Leticia branch of Colombia’s National University. “The river is essential.”

The area around Leticia is known as the “triple frontier” because the river forms the border with Peru while the Brazilian town of Tabatinga lies next door. Tourists, boat pilots, and shoppers from all three countries, speaking English, Spanish and Portuguese, come and go as they please.

A local adage holds that people here breakfast in Colombia, lunch in Peru and have dinner in Brazil.

But the good-neighbor vibe is starting to sour as Colombia frets about river access. As the water recedes, Leticia’s cargo wharf has been extended several times to reach the river. But during dry season it sits on dry land, rendering forklifts and other machinery useless.

On a recent morning, sweaty workers unloaded cargo boats by hand, carrying crates of beer, sacks of rice, and bags of flour on their shoulders 100 yards up the muddy riverbank to trucks waiting on the wharf. All this slows trade and drives up costs.

“It’s like going back to the 18th century,” says Sigifredo Beltrán, a Leticia businessman and hotel owner.

For decades, Colombian officials ignored the problem. But that changed in July amid a dispute with Peru over a tiny island called Santa Rosa that lies in the Amazon River a few hundred yards across the water from Leticia.
The Peru-Colombia border was fixed under a 1922 treaty. But Santa Rosa formed in 1974 and has never been formally allocated to either country. About 3,000 Peruvians live there yet Colombia also claims the island.

When Peru’s congress suddenly upgraded Santa Rosa’s status from village to town, giving it a larger government presence, Colombia President Gustavo Petro flew to Leticia to protest. In a speech, Petro insisted: “Colombia does not recognize Peruvian sovereignty over Santa Rosa.”

Then, in a bizarre stunt, Daniel Quintero, a Colombian presidential candidate, posted a video of himself sneaking onto Santa Rosa and raising a yellow-blue-and-red Colombian flag, and declaring: “This is Colombian territory.” With 15 minutes, Peruvian authorities took it down.

Whipping up nationalist sentiment is a common practice for politicians who know that territorial disputes remain a sore spot for Colombians. The most infamous case was Panama, which used to be a Colombian province. Then, in 1903. the U.S. government fomented a revolution so it could build the Panama Canal.

Colombia and Peru have often wrangled over their frontier. In fact, Leticia was established by the Peruvian military in the 1800s and takes its name from the girlfriend of one of its founding fathers. The town then switched hands to give Colombia access to the Amazon River, but Peruvians protested and in 1932 the two sides fought a brief border war.

As for Santa Rosa, experts say that both nations have legitimate claims to the island.

The 1922 border treaty states that the deepest channel of the Amazon River is the frontier, with Colombia to the north and Peru to the south. When Santa Rosa formed, the deepest channel ran north of the island making it Peruvian.

But the river has shifted and divided and now a smaller branch of the Amazon flows past Leticia. Its deepest channel runs south of Santa Rosa, which would back up Colombia’s claim to the island, says Walter Arévalo, an international law professor at Rosario University in Bogotá.

He says disputes over riverine borders are common. For example, Belgium and the Netherlands hold talks every few years about newly formed islands and changes in course the Meuse River that forms part of their border. He said Colombia and Peru should follow their example.

“The ideal situation would be for both countries to take full advantage of the river,” Arévalo said.

In the 1980s, Colombia and Peru formed a bilateral border commission. It had been dormant but amid the current dispute, the commission has scheduled meetings for Lima, the Peruvian capital, on Sept. 11 and 12.

Colombia could have avoided the specter of a landlocked Leticia had dredged the smaller branch of the Amazon River that now flows past the town. But dredging is expensive and Duque, the university professor, says Colombian politicians pay little attention to this region because of its sparse populated.

In Santa Rosa, where a huge red-and-white Peruvian flag greets visitors, residents are proudly Peruvian. But they’re not spoiling for a fight. Hotel manager Iván Yovera says islanders often shop, send their kids to school and get medical care in the much larger Leticia.

“We’ve never had problems” with Colombia,” adds fisherwoman Flor Gómez, as she leans over the wooden balcony of her house. “We are like brothers.

Max Ortiz, the acting mayor of Santa Rosa, predicts border disputes will keep cropping up due to the ever-changing flow of the Amazon River. He quips: “That’s Mother Nature.”

Rams vs. Houston Texans: How to watch, prediction and odds

p]:text-cms-story-body-color-text clearfix”>

If the Rams pass rush wants to christen itself as the NFL’s most ferocious, the Houston Texans could offer a prime chance to showcase its “dangerous” capabilities.

The offensive line has been a significant concern for the Texans, to the point where coach DeMeco Ryans is tired of talking about it. Despite quarterback CJ Stroud being sacked 52 times last season (third most in the NFL), Houston wasn’t necessarily able to improve the unit, especially after trading blindside protector Laremy Tunsil to Washington.

The mostly fresh-faced starting five will be tasked with staying in front of a Rams pass rush contingent that enters the season ranked sixth in the NFL by Pro Football Focus.

Jared Verse, Kobie Turner, Braden Fiske and Byron Young could create significant issues for Stroud, and Poona Ford could be the missing ingredient the Rams need to shore up their defensive front to create even more problems for opposing offenses.

Stroud isn’t the only one facing a tough pass rush. Matthew Stafford and his recovering back will be tested against a Houston defense that racked up 49 sacks (fourth in NFL) and 19 interceptions (second) last season.

The 37-year-old quarterback didn’t practice until late into training camp, but Stafford and coach Sean McVay have said they are confident everything will be normal.

Haley Kalil Confirms Breakup And Closes Chapter On Past Relationship

Instagram/@haleyybaylee

Haley Kalil has offi- cially confirmed the termination of a relationship while shutting down casting speculations about infidelity and asking for some kindness from the followers. This social media celeb and content creator went on Instagram to quell the rumors while maintaining some level of privacy. Another major personal transition for Kalil, who has garnered a huge following with the help of her very own codes of candid content and standout collaborations.

In her post, Kalil wrote; “…and the chapter of that book is officially closed. No he didn’t cheat. Do not be unkind, do not say mean things, let’s just move on and forget any of that ever happened.” Until these words, a video followed of Haley Kalil where she oozed confidence about moving on, her current state regarding closure and moving forward being almost eerily represented by some of the lyrics.

Kalil’s short statement put her followers into shock, and many had been surprised at the thought that she might have actually been in a relationship. One of them wrote, “Wait…. there was a MAN? WHAT HAVE I MISSED?” Another lamented, “I didn’t even know his name.” The absence of any vivid recollection of the ex-partner by most of her followers is a testament to how much Kalil has maintained her private life as far as this issue is concerned.

“Yes, let´s normalize that cheating is NOT the only way of wronging someone. If she says he didn´t, then let be it. She has the right to keep the details to herself.” This particular statement was echoed by other fans who lauded the dignity Kalil maintained while dealing with the breakup.

The discussion got distracted for a moment while one comment went, “how dating a pieces man inevitably ends,” sparking a mini-debate about zodiac signs and patterns in their relationships. Other comments, though, were themed on Kalil in the video, a fan noted, “My favorite part about being a woman is getting hotter the more you’re wronged.” Kalil never replied to that one but very well embodied it in the presentation of her video.

Several comments harkened back to prior warning signs about the ex-boyfriend’s behavior, with one user even questioning, “Girl, didn’t his ex already warn you that he’s the biggest red flag, and you still went for it?” suggesting that some followers may well have been suspicious of trouble in the relationship gleaned from her content.

Kalil responded to some comments herself: to one she said, “He can post me I don’t care. No reason to attack or be unkind to him. It’s on me to set boundaries and know that chapter is done to protect my heart.” In many ways, Lang interpreted the way she handled this as mature with no ill feelings toward her former partner.

The breakup subsequently catalyzed protectiveness from fans claiming Kalil deserved better: “Hayley he wasn’t even good looking 😂 You can do better ✨,” one follower opined, followed by another: “Ariana grande said you’re the most stunning woman she’d ever seen, why tf are u settling for a man fr.” It is a testament to how much of a following Kalil has built for herself throughout her career.

Bye-bye’s and ‘aw’s were issued out in lamentation from some fans with one saying: “‘wtf is this a joke NOOOOO😭,’” an indicator of how personally some of them have taken Kalil’s story. Others cheered the newly single status: “ANOTHER MOMMY IS SINGLE NOWWWW YEAHHHH.”

Throughout the comments section, she kept on refusing to air dirty laundry while still encouraging positive vibes. Her handling of the breakup is in keeping with a growing trend in which celebrities choose to handle their private affairs quietly yet acknowledge the corresponding major life changes to their fanbase. Her community has rallied around her out of concern, with many respecting her desire to keep some parts of her life private.

Kalil’s handling of the personal transition seems to be emblematic of how social media personalities negotiate the landing on a complicated issue between their public and private lives. The emphasis on dealing with the issue straight, while at the same time maintaining boundaries, has allowed her to gain control of the breakup narrative, which has been embraced by the community with great support. Chapter closed or not, the viewership remains engaged and rooting for whatever comes next.

In one of her viral videos, Kalil mocks reality TV stars, which also contributed to her online persona that fans adore. Additionally, her viral video collaboration with Kang Daniel showcases her engaging content creation style. Furthermore, she perfectly captured the essence of universal experiences in another clip reflecting on partying, as seen in this video.

  1. Prepare & Water Bath: Preheat the oven to 300°F with the rack placed in the center. Place a second rack just beneath it and add an empty baking sheet. Fill the empty baking sheet with water to create steam in the oven. Spray a muffin pan well with nonstick cooking spray and set aside. In a blender, add the eggs, cottage cheese, salt, pepper, and dried basil.
  2. Blend: Blend for 15-20 seconds until smooth.
  3. Combine: Transfer the egg mixture to a large bowl and stir in the shredded cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, and the cooked and crumbled Italian sausage. Use a measuring cup to scoop the egg mixture into the wells of the muffin tin, filling them no more than ⅔ of the way full. Try to disperse the sausage evenly throughout the muffin wells.
  4. Bake: Place the muffin tin on the middle rack of the oven and bake for 30-35 minutes or until the center of the egg bites is set. Remove Starbucks egg bites from the oven and let them cool completely before removing from the pan.

The Android moving migraine

First things first, credit where credit’s due: Moving to a new Android phone has gotten a lot easier over the years.

‘Twas a time when setting up a new Android device required all manners of hoop-jumping, with virtually no systems in place to help with any of the heavy lifting. These days, Google’s got all sorts of systems in place to make the act of backing up and restoring important stuff relatively simple and painless, and for the most part, there isn’t a heck of a lot you have to do.

There is, however, one exception — and that’s messaging. For whatever reason, migrating your messages from one Android device to another often seems to go akimbo and fail to properly bring all of your conversations over intact. Or, sometimes, even when it does work right off the bat, a situation arises where you need to repeat the migration a little later — maybe, say, if you set up a new device but don’t actually switch your SIM over to it and start using it right away, so then you want to move your messages over anew some days later when you are ready to fully make the change.

Porsche and Audi’s EVs can now recharge on any Tesla Supercharger in North America

0

Starting September 9, Porsche and Audi will be the latest non-Tesla brands to utilize the Supercharger network. The two automakers announced that some of their owners will get adapters that allow them to charge via the NACS port, which Tesla developed and opened up to other automakers. The rollout comes after the Volkswagen Group, which owns both Porsche and Audi, announced that it would implement NACS compatibility for Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche and Scout Motors in December 2023.

Porsche is kicking off its NACS adoption with a “soft launch,” where existing owners of Taycan and Macan Electric models have to reserve a free NACS to DC adapter with the My Porsche app to connect to the Tesla Supercharger network. During this initial phase, drivers of compatible Porsche EVs have to use the Tesla app at Superchargers, but will eventually be able to charge with the My Porsche app in “the coming months,” according to Porsche. Like Porsche, Audi is getting its own branded adapter that will arrive with newer 2025 model year options, including its Q6 e-tron, A6 Sportback e-tron and e-tron GT. Notably, Audi said its Q4 e-tron won’t currently have access to Tesla Superchargers.

For Porsche, any Taycan and Macan Electric from model year 2026 onward will include a free NACS adapter. However, Porsche EVs from model year 2024 or older will have to buy the adapter from Porsche’s online shop or dealerships, which will go for $185. Porsche and Audi are also working on software updates to show Tesla Superchargers on their navigation systems. Despite Porsche and Audi now gaining access to the Supercharger network, Volkswagen Group’s other subsidiaries, including Lamborghini and Bentley, still haven’t committed to adopting NACS.

About Andrew Cabot, Andy Byron Rumors – Hollywood Life

0

Kristin Cabot, (whose maiden name is Stanek) the former chief people officer of Astronomer, was thrown into the spotlight in July 2025 after she was seen in a viral kiss cam moment at a Coldplay concert with her ex-boss, former Astronomer CEO Andy Byron. A concertgoer’s TikTok captured the Jumbotron shot of Andy embracing Kristin before realizing they were on camera. They immediately let go of each other and were visibly embarrassed. Social media blew up as a result when it was discovered that Andy was married. So, does Kristin have a husband, or is she single?

Below, we’re breaking down what happened at the Coldplay concert and more about Andy and Kristin.

Who Is Kristin Cabot?

Kristin worked as the “chief people officer” at Astronomer. She was hired at the end of 2024, according to her LinkedIn profile, which describes her as a “passionate people leader known for building award-winning cultures from the ground up for fast-growing startups and multi-national corporations.”

Elsewhere in her LinkedIn profile, Kristin wrote that she is “an influential leader and fearless change-agent” who leads “by example and [wins] trust with employees of all levels, from CEOs to managers to assistants.”

According to Newsweek, Andy once praised Kristin after she was hired to work at Astronomer. He credited her “exceptional leadership and deep expertise in talent management, employee engagement, and scaling people strategies” as being “critical” for the team.

Who Is Kristin Cabot’s Husband?

Kristin is married to husband Andrew Cabot, the CEO of Privateer Rum, according to the New York Post. The outlet reported that the Cabot’s bought a home with him just five months before the kiss cam debacle in July.

After the dust settled from the Coldplay concert, Andrew’s ex-wife, Julia, told the Daily Mail in September that she “texted Andrew right after it happened, and he said: ‘Her life has nothing to do with me,’ and said they were separating.”

Who Is Kristin Cabot’s Former Husband?

Kristin was previously married to her ex-husband, Kenneth Thornby. They separated in 2018 and finalized their divorce in 2022, according to the New York Post.

Who Is Andy Byron’s Wife?

Andy’s wife is Megan Kerrigan Byron. Andy reportedly shares children with Megan.

Is Andy Byron Still Married to His Wife?

Not much is known about Megan, except that the Astronomer CEO is still legally married to her.

Are Andy Byron & Kristin Cabot Having an Affair?

It’s unclear whether or not the affair rumors between Andy and Kristin are true. Neither Andy, Kristin nor Megan has publicly commented on the speculation.

However, the viral on-camera moment between Andy and Kristin ignited unwanted attention. After they were seen in a seemingly romantic embrace, then quickly separating, Coldplay’s Chris Martin made a cheeky joke that may have fueled the affair rumors.

“All right, come on, you’re OK,” Chris said to Kristin and Andy, according to Newsweek, before jokingly adding, “Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy.”

Astronomer broke its silence in an official LinkedIn statement on July 18, 2025, which read, “Astronomer is committed to the values and culture that have guided us since our founding. Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability. The Board of Directors has initiated a formal investigation into this matter and we will have additional details to share very shortly. … Andy Byron has not put out any statement, reports saying otherwise are all incorrect.”

‘Hidden gem’ UK beach with ‘crystal clear water’ is ‘slice of paradise | UK | Travel

0

Travel lovers have fallen for a “breathtaking” UK beach with “crystal clear water” that “looks like Mauritius.” Described as a “slice of heaven,” Lantic Bay in Cornwall is a “must visit,” according to fans.

Photographer Jason Sturgess amazed beach lovers after sharing his footage of the “hidden gem” on TikTok @jason_sturgess. In his viral video, which earned over 220,000 views, Jason told his followers: “Welcome to Lantic Bay, right here in Cornwall. Join me as we cruise along the absolutely crystal clear waters of this amazing beach on the Cornish coastline.”

In his caption, he added that Lantic Bay is a “must visit beach”. Replying to the video, a fan praised: “Wow, beautiful.” Another viewer commented: “A slice of heaven,” and someone suggested: “Water looks like Mauritius.”

Accessed by steep and uneven paths, the beach is lesser-known to many tourists. However, for people who can safely visit it, the National Trust says the “beautiful bay” is a ” great spot for paddling and picnicking” and “well worth the climb back up.”

Found near Polruan, it could be the perfect spot for anyone looking for a clifftop walk. Some of the walk to the bay can be viewed in another TikTok video shared by Lisa Fernandez (@lfern788).

In her video, she suggested the route is “not for the faint hearted.” However, she loved her visit to the bay. Her caption praised: “Beautiful beach, unspoilt and quiet hidden gem in Cornwall.”

Lantic Bay has received glowing reviews on TripAdvisor. One visitor commented: “Lantic Bay is absolutely stunning – one of the most beautiful spots I’ve visited in Cornwall. The walk down is definitely long and steep, so good footwear is a must, but once you reach the bay, it’s completely worth it. Crystal-clear water, peaceful surroundings, and incredible views. It felt like a little slice of paradise. I would definitely do it again!”

Another fan wrote: “Gorgeous grand expansive clean dog friendly beach. However the path is quite a walk, especially the return ascent. Nearby NT car park available. No toilet or eating facilities. I flew a drone here, and the pictures are awesome. One of the many Cornish jewels.”

Someone else commented: “A real hidden gem, completely off the beaten track (literally, a good mile walk down steep & rocky path), but well worth it because the beach is unspoilt and picturesque. It’s a mixture of sand & shingles, with almost clear water (you’d almost think you were in the Med, if it wasn’t for the freezing water!) It’s a great for snorkelling too, but try to plan for a sunny day if possible! Can highly recommend.”

Meanwhile, a reviewer who visited in September a few years ago loved the spot for an autumn walk. They said: “We spent a lovely couple of hours on the beach here. We were lucky to have warm sunshine and the water was crystal clear. The beach is shingle and sand. Felt like we were in the Mediterranean.

“We visited as part of a 5 mile circular walk and didn’t factor in the 1/4 mile steep walk down and back up the cliff but it was well worth the effort. Travel light though as it isnt an easy path, more a climb! The nearest car park in only a short walk across a field once at the top of the cliff. Would highly recommend this beach!”

The postcode for Lantic Bay is PL23 1NP. Daytime parking is available, but access to the beach is via a very steep slope and steps.

As Burberry prepares to rejoin the FTSE 100, could the stock be the next Rolls-Royce?

0

Rolls-Royce has been the top-performing FTSE 100 stock of the last five years. Its success has been driven by a combination of a better trading environment and internal improvements.

By contrast, it’s been a tough few years for Burberry (LSE:BRBY). But the company could be set to benefit from a similar combination of positive forces to the ones that propelled Rolls-Royce.

Internal improvements

Burberry has made a number of key strategic and operational changes over the last year. And these are a major reason why the share price has more than doubled.

The firm has shifted its marketing focus and looked to concentrate on its core outerwear, scarves and leather goods. And newish Chief Creative Officer Daniel Lee’s latest collections have been well-received.

Operationally, Burberry went from losing money during the first half of 2024 to profitability in the second. A lot of this was due to cutting costs, where the company is aiming to save £60m.

I think this is encouraging, but the firm will only be able to boost profits with cost reductions for so long. Sooner or later, the ongoing decline in revenues is going to have to reverse.

Trading environment

There are, however, good signs on this front. Over the last few years, weak demand from China – one of the company’s largest markets – has been weighing on overall sales.

But the economic backdrop could be starting to improve. Earlier this week, Erwan Rambourg at HSBC upgraded LVMH and Kering to Buy, citing accelerating demand from China.

The bank also has a Buy rating on Burberry shares and raised its price target in May from £8.80 to £12.50. That’s roughly where the stock is now.

Without sales growth, I think the rally in the Burberry share price is going to prove unsustainable. But improving demand from China could be just what’s needed to get revenues growing again.

Combined forces

When an improved business meets with a favourable trading environment, the results can be spectacular. But investors need to make sure they’re not getting ahead of themselves.

Companies like Burberry are naturally prone to ups and downs that are beyond their control. The impact of weak consumer confidence in China is a good illustration of this.

This is an important risk to pay attention to, especially from a long-term perspective. But it can also create opportunities for investors to buy the stock at bargain prices.

Burberry’s share price has doubled in the last 12 months, but it’s still 50% below where it was in 2203. So there might still be an opportunity to benefit from a rebound in the company’s fortunes.

FTSE 100 readmission

Burberry is set to rejoin the FTSE 100 later this month. And this news might well be causing some unusual amounts of interest in the stock as index funds prepare to buy it for their portfolios.

As a result, I’m looking to wait until the dust settles a bit before thinking about it in the context of my own investing. And the firm’s next update in November will be crucial.

The most recent update indicated that sales declines have all but stopped. So if the company can get back to growth, I think the stock could react very positively and may be worth considering.
