Dangerous, widespread winds spark fire worries in Southern California

0

By January, Southern California usually has experienced enough rain that a major winter wind event does not bring fears of a major fire.

But not this year.

More than eight months without any measurable rainfall, Southland officials are gearing up for what is expected to be a “life-threatening and destructive” windstorm. The winds will last several days and occur in areas well beyond the region’s typical wind corridors — with the potential to drag the area’s fire season into January.

“This upcoming event is extreme,” said Capt. Erik Scott, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Fire Department. “Many people think that when the winter months come they might be out of fire danger and that’s simply not true, especially in Southern California.”

Gusty, dry winds — some that could reach up to 100 mph — are forecast across much of Los Angeles and Ventura counties beginning Tuesday, and are expected to elevate the threat for fast-moving wildfires and also cause damage to trees, powerlines and even high-profile vehicles.

A rare, late-season red flag warning describing “widespread, damaging … and long-duration” fire weather conditions has been issued for the region through at least Thursday, with a possibility that it could be extended to Friday. This is the first January since 2021 that the National Weather Service’s Los Angeles office has issued such an alert.

“It’s not a common occurrence,” said Rich Thompson, a weather service meteorologist, of the January red flag warning. But he said it does happen, particularly “at times in our drier winters.”

And so far, Southern California is experiencing one of its driest starts in years to what is supposed to be the rainy season. Downtown Los Angeles hasn’t seen recorded over a tenth of an inch of rain since May 5.

“We can’t let our guard down in Southern California,” said Brent Pascua, a battalion chief for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. “This year, we haven’t seen as much moisture… so the fuel is primed.”

Parched vegetation on its own isn’t a major concern during cooler months, typically, but when a strong Santa Ana winds pick up and humidity drops, a single spark can rapidly become dangerous, Pascua said.

“That is the perfect recipe for a large wildfire,” he said.

The upcoming windstorm hadn’t yet elevated the red flag warning to an even more unusual “particularly dangerous situation” as of Monday afternoon, but forecasters are warning conditions could worsen. Both the Mountain fire in November in Ventura County and the Franklin fire in December in Malibu erupted amid those dangerously dry, windy conditions.

“If fire ignition occurs, conditions are favorable for very rapid fire spread and extreme fire behavior, including long range spotting, which would threaten life and property,” this week’s red flag warning said. “Use extreme caution with anything that can spark a wildfire. Residents near wildland interfaces should be prepared to evacuate if a wildfire breaks out.”

While large wildfires in January remain rare for California — since 2016, there have only been a handful of January fires and most of them have been small, according to the CalFire database — they are not unheard of. In 2014, the Colby fire broke out in Glendora and Azusa in mid-January, destroying several homes and structures in the area.

Extra concerning is this wind event’s broad scope. Dangerously strong winds are expected in the mountains and along typical windy corridors, but also in regions that don’t typically see these strong Santa Anas: includng the Hollywood Hills, Beverly Hills and the Sepulveda Pass, and even into the Palos Verdes Penninsula and onto Catalina Island. Those areas are under a fire weather watch as of Monday.

“Given the widespread nature of the winds we’re expecting, it’s a very high level of concern everywhere,” Thompson said. “Anywhere in L.A. County outside of the Antelope Valley — from the mountains to the coast, … be ready to take action if a fire does break out during this event.”

Across the region, sustained north and northeast winds are expected around 35 to 55 mph, with widespread damaging gusts up 50 to 80 mph, the weather service warned. The strongest winds are expected in the mountains, foothills, and valleys, where isolated gusts from 80 to 100 mph are possible in some San Fernando and San Gabriel foothills, including Crescenta, Altadena, Monrovia, and Azusa.

There’s also a chance for “strong mountain wave wind conditions” late Tuesday into early Wednesday, which means the winds could orient in such a way that gusts will rapidly drop down the slopes of the San Gabriel mountains causing “brief bursts of very strong, dangerous winds,” Thompson said.

“If it does develop, it can cause very specific damage,” he said. “Imagine like a wave in the water … those winds kind of go down slope, then just hit the surface and get very strong.”

Such a “mountain wave” event wouldn’t last long, but it has the potential to cause destruction similar to what occurred in 2011 in Pasadena, Altadena and other San Gabriel Valley neighborhoods, when blasts of wind caused serious damage, including knocking out power for days for more than 400,000 people.

“Stay indoors and away from windows,” the weather service warned in its latest alert, focused on that region. “Expect power outages.”

Officials said they are coordinating with the weather service to best prepare for both wind damage and possible fires. CalFire has been pre-positioning resources and increasing staffing across Southern California ahead of the winds, Pascua said. In Los Angeles, crews are setting up additional resources near high-fire zones and making contingency plans for what to do if an emergency does arise, Scott said.

Utility providers have warned that along with unplanned outages, they may initiate planned shutoffs to limit fire starts. Southern California Edison has warned 294,000 customers, primarily across Los Angeles, Ventura, Riverside and San Bernardino counties, may see shutoffs Tuesday and Wednesday “due to heightened wildfire risk.” San Diego Gas & Electric is considering cutting off power to almost 60,000 customers beginning Tuesday across mostly inland San Diego County.

The current red flag warning is only focused on Los Angeles and Ventura counties, but weather service officials said it could be extended into Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties.

Many parts of Southern California that are not included in the fire weather warnings are still under a high wind watches, with damaging winds expected to cause disruptions to power or travel Tuesday and Wednesday, including across inland Orange County, the Inland Empire and the San Bernardino, Riverside and San Diego mountains and valleys.

Apple’s fix for AI notification summaries won’t improve results

0

AI summaries don’t always get the details right

In a response to BBC concerns over incorrect Apple Intelligence notification summaries, Apple has promised to make it more clear when AI is used.

Apple Intelligence rolled out to the public in October 2024 in a very early state. One of the primary features, notification summaries, often stumbles over the nuances in language that result in incorrect or outlandish results.

Rather than promise to make notification summaries better, Apple has shared, through a statement to the BBC that it will make it more clear when AI is used to generate a notification summary. The fix is meant to ensure users know that what they see may not be 100% accurate.

Apple’s response comes after repeated complaints from the publication. Summaries have shown people being murdered, coming out as gay, or other shocking combinations that stun users and content publishers.

The fix will likely help reduce some of the concerns, as the current UI shows a tiny symbol of two lines and a curved arrow when a summary is performed. If users know a summary is AI-generated before they read it, it may help reduce confusion.

Apple could have promised to “fix” Apple Intelligence summaries, but it isn’t as simple as that. The company is always working to improve the model, but there will always be a chance that different notifications coming in could create disastrous results.

A recent example being shared to social media is a summary suggesting Nikki Glaser was killed at the Golden Globes. The real headline read “Nikki Glaser killed as host of the Golden Globes.”

As many non-native English speakers will tell you, there are way too many idioms and alternative meanings in the language. An artificial language generation tool looking for keywords to use in a summary can’t pick up on subtleties or sarcasm.

It seems doubtful that Apple’s fix will satisfy the complainers, but there is another option for users. Go to Settings -> Notifications -> Summarize Notifications to turn off the feature or at least toggle which apps use it.

‘No question’ Merab is ‘bantamweight GOAT’ with Umar victory at UFC 311 — ‘He feels a little disrespected’

0

MMA logic is sorta like MMA math.

UFC bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili’s head coach, John Wood, claims “there’s a lot of debate on whether Umar deserves the title shot” in the UFC 311 pay-per-view (PPV) co-main event on Jan. 18 in Los Angeles. That supports the argument that Nurmagomedov’s rise to the top has more to do with his last name than his in-cage accomplishments.

Wood also claims that beating Umar makes Merab the greatest bantamweight in history.

“Merab goes out and beats Umar, which I believe he will, I think there’s no question that he’s the bantamweight GOAT,” Wood told Inside Fighting. “And had all those guys that he beat been title defenses, I think that question is … it’s not even a question now. So I think we’re looking at the next bantamweight GOAT here shortly.”

Expect Dvalishvili to be both “motivated” and “emotional” on fight night.

“That is part of the process that we get into,” Wood continued. “This one, there’s been a little more emotion to it as far as he feels a little disrespected that he is the champion and that this guy … there’s a lot of debate on whether Umar deserves the title shot, Umar deserves jumping up and taking it.”

Umar is currently the odds-on betting favorite.

The 28 year-old Nurmagomedov improved to 18-0 by defeating Cory Sandhagen atop the UFC Abu Dhabi fight card last August. As for Dvalishvili, 33, he bumped his record to 18-4 — and captured the 135-pound crown — with a dominant performance over Sean O’Malley at UFC 306 inside Sphere last fall.

The Reason Why Jennifer Lawrence And Cooke Maroney Almost Didn’t Get Married

Pagesix

Jennifer Lawrence has expressed her extreme contentment with the decision not to postpone her nuptials with Cooke Maroney, now her husband. In 2019, while Lawrence was filming her newest film, Causeway, she had the epiphany that she began to identify with her character’s anxiety with long-term commitments.

She elaborated on this concept in an interview with the New York Times published on Wednesday. The discussion was titled “When You Don’t Fully Know Yourself, You Have No Idea Where to Put Yourself.” After that, I met my future husband, who told me to “put myself here.” I thought That seemed reasonable, but what if it isn’t?

Later on, the actress from “Silver Linings Playbook” concluded that she had been suffering from commitment anxiety the entire time she was working on the movie, but she hadn’t been aware of it at the time. Later, she explained, she returned, and now that she is settling down with her husband to have a family, she is glad she stayed.

I’m relieved that I didn’t have a nervous breakdown, call off the wedding, and flee the country since I’ll never be defeated!

In October 2019, Lawrence, who is 32 years old, wed Maroney in a ceremony attended by many famous people in Newport, Rhode Island. Her wedding to the art gallery director took place in the historic mansion at Belcourt of Newport, which was attended by many famous people, including Adele, Kris Jenner, and Emma Stone.

The sequined neckline of the actress’s wedding dress by Dior, which had its hotel room in the days preceding the big day, was only seen in paparazzi images. The Joy actress never publicly published photos of her wedding dress. Maroney, on the other hand, decided to wear a traditional tuxedo.

A little boy named Cy was born to Lawrence and her husband early this year. The fact that Lawrence and Maroney were an item was first reported by Page Six in June of 2018.

The African city and safari hotspot where flight searches have doubled | World | News

0

An African city has been named one of the most trending destinations for 2025 as searches skyrocket.

Interest in the area has nearly doubled, with travel experts at KAYAK stating that there’s been a 93% increase in flight searches for 2025 versus 2024.

Harare is the capital of Zimbabwe and home to landscaped gardens, the country’s National Gallery, and the unusual granite formation Epworth Balancing Rocks located just outside the city.

The region is also a popular safari destination, as around the city lives a plethora of wildlife, such as zebras and giraffes that roam through the Mukuvisi Woodlands. The area also has bike paths and a bird park.

Sarafi Frank reports that Harare’s most affluent neighbourhoods are to the north, including Borrowdale, where there are new shopping centres.

The site adds that, while it’s tempting to rush off to your safari, it is well worth hanging around in the city to sample its dining, museums, craft markets and varied bars.

It comes as KAYAK says that safaris in Zimbabwe, alongside surfing in South Africa, and spiritual retreats in India, are examples of adventures that Brits are longing for, according to new data from its search engine.

The figures analysed flight searches on the site, and revealed that eight of the top ten trending travel destinations for summer 2025 are located outside of Europe.

Zimbabwe took the top spot.

Further underscoring this trend, KAYAK surveyed British travellers on their summer holiday plans this and found that almost one-third (28%) of Brits have already explored Europe and are now wanting to head further afield, and 9% even saying that they find European holidays “boring”.

Rachel Mumford, KAYAK UK Travel Expert, said: “Going long-haul is always exciting.

“Whether you’re heading to Australia for the beautiful long beaches, or going off the beaten track in South East Asia, experiencing something new and different to home is the ultimate adventure

“2025 is shaping up to be an ideal time to tick long-haul dream destinations off your bucket list without breaking the bank, with airfare prices currently dropping to iconic destinations like Australia, Japan, and Indonesia.

“Coupled with favourable exchange rates, travellers could enjoy even greater value for their money while exploring these incredible locations.”
