‘Don’t bite me’: Man heard screaming moments before fatal shark attack in Sydney | World News

0

A man was heard screaming in the water moments before he died after a shark attack in Sydney, witnesses have said.

Emergency services responded to reports that a man in his 50s had suffered critical injuries at Long Reef Beach shortly after 10am (1am in the UK) on Saturday.

The man, whose identity has yet to be confirmed, was brought to shore but died at the scene, authorities have said.

Two sections of a surfboard have been recovered and taken for examination, and beaches near the area are closed as drones search for the animal.

Police are liaising with wildlife experts to determine the species of shark involved.

Surfer screamed ‘don’t bite me’

Speaking to Sky News Australia, witness Mark Morgenthal said he saw the attack and that the shark was one of the biggest he had ever seen.

“There was a guy screaming, ‘I don’t want to get bitten, I don’t want to get bitten, don’t bite me,’ and I saw the dorsal fin of the shark come up, and it was huge,” Mr Morgenthal said.

“Then I saw the tail fin come up and start kicking, and the distance between the dorsal fin and the tail fin looked to be about four metres, so it actually looked like a six-metre shark.”

Victim was a father and experienced surfer

New South Wales Police Superintendent John Duncan said at a press conference that the victim was 57 years old, calling the incident a “terrible tragedy”.

“The gentleman had gone out about 9.30 this morning with some of his friends, about five or six of his mates,” he added. “He’s an experienced surfer that we understand.

“Unfortunately, it would appear that a large, what we believe to be a shark, has attacked him. And as a result of that, he lost a number of limbs.

“His colleagues managed to make it back to the beach safely, and a short time later, his body was found floating in the surf, and a couple of other people went out and recovered it.”

Mr Duncan added that officers “understand he leaves behind a wife and a young daughter… and obviously tomorrow being Father’s Day is particularly critical and particularly tragic”.

Surf Life Saving NSW has deployed a drone to search for further shark activity.

Its chief executive Steve Pearce said: “Our deepest condolences go to the family of the man involved in this terrible tragedy.”

Shark attacks are very rare, with this incident widely thought to be the first in New South Wales this year.

The last time a person in Sydney was killed in a shark attack was in February 2022 – the city’s first fatal shark attack since 1963.

Judge blocks Trump administration’s ending of protections for Venezuelans and Haitians : NPR

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem speaks to reporters before touring “Camp 57,” a facility to house immigration detainees at the Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola, La., Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2025.

SAN FRANCISCO — A federal judge on Friday blocked the Trump administration from ending temporary legal protections that have granted more than 1 million people from Haiti and Venezuela the right to live and work in the United States.

The ruling by U.S. District Judge Edward Chen of San Francisco for the plaintiffs means 600,000 Venezuelans whose temporary protections expired in April or whose protections were about to expire Sept. 10 have status to stay and work in the United States. It also keeps protections for about 500,000 Haitians.

Chen scolded Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem for revoking protections for Venezuelans and Haitians that the judge said would send them “back to conditions that are so dangerous that even the State Department advises against travel to their home countries.”

He said Noem’s actions were arbitrary and capricious, and she exceeded her authority in ending protections that were extended by the Biden administration.

Presidential administrations have executed the law for 35 years based on the best available information and in consultation with other agencies, “a process that involves careful study and analysis. Until now,” Chen wrote.

Plaintiffs and their attorneys welcomed the news Friday, although it’s unclear if it would help people who have already been deported.

“In recent months, people have suffered unspeakable harm — including deportation and family separation — due to the Supreme Court greenlighting Secretary Noem’s discriminatory and harmful agenda,” said Emi Maclean, senior staff attorney with the ACLU Foundation of Northern California. “That must end now.”

A DHS spokesperson said in an email that the program has been “abused, exploited, and politicized as a de facto amnesty program” and that “unelected activist judges” cannot stop the American people’s desire for a secure country.

“While this order delays justice, Secretary Noem will use every legal option at the Department’s disposal to end this chaos and prioritize the safety of Americans,” the email read.

The second Trump administration’s crackdown on immigration has resulted in ramped-up arrests of people in the country illegally, but also an end to programs that offer legal yet temporary authorization to live and work in the U.S. if conditions in immigrants’ homelands are deemed unsafe.

According to court documents, the administration has terminated Temporary Protected Status, or TPS, and Humanitarian Parole designations for about 1.5 million people, prompting lawsuits across the country from immigrant advocates.

Temporary Protected Status is a designation that can be granted by the Homeland Security secretary to people in the United States, if conditions in their homelands are deemed unsafe for return due to a natural disaster, political instability or other dangerous conditions.

Millions of Venezuelans have fled political unrest, mass unemployment and hunger. The country is mired in a prolonged crisis brought on by years of hyperinflation, political corruption, economic mismanagement and an ineffectual government.

Haiti was first designated for TPS in 2010 after a catastrophic magnitude 7.0 earthquake killed and wounded hundreds of thousands of people, and left more than 1 million homeless. Haitians face widespread hunger and gang violence.

Their designations were to expire in September but later extended until February, due to a separate court order out of New York.

Noem said that conditions in both Haiti and Venezuela had improved and that it was not in the national interest to allow migrants from the countries to stay on for what is a temporary program. Attorneys for the government have said the secretary’s clear and broad authority to make determinations related to the TPS program are not subject to judicial review.

Designations are granted for terms of six, twelve or 18 months, and extensions can be granted so long as conditions remain dire. The status prevents holders from being deported and allows them to work.

The secretary’s action in revoking TPS was not only unprecedented in the manner and speed in which it was taken but also violated the law, Chen wrote.

The case has had numerous legal twists, including an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.

In March, Chen temporarily paused the administration’s plans to end TPS for people from Venezuela. An estimated 350,000 Venezuelans were set to lose protections the following month.

But the U.S. Supreme Court in May reversed his order while the lawsuit played out. The justices provided no rationale, which is common in emergency appeals, and did not rule on the merits of the case.

Venezuelans with expired protections were fired from jobs, separated from children, detained by officers and even deported, lawyers for TPS holders said.

A court declaration provided by plaintiffs showed the turmoil caused by the Trump administration and the Supreme Court decision.

After appearing for her annual immigration check-in, a restaurant hostess living in Indiana was deported back to Venezuela in July. Her husband, a construction company supervisor, cannot work and care for their baby daughter at the same time.

In June, a FedEx employee appeared in uniform at his required immigration check-in only to be detained, the court declaration states. He slept for about two weeks on a floor, terrified he would be sent to El Salvador’s notorious CECOT prison. His wife cannot maintain the household on her earnings.

“I am not a criminal,” he said in the declaration, adding that “immigrants like myself come to the United States to work hard and contribute, and instead our families and lives are being torn apart.”

The Supreme Court’s reversal does not apply to Friday’s ruling. The government is expected to appeal.

Last week, a three-judge appeals panel also sided with plaintiffs, saying the Republican administration did not have the authority to vacate protection extensions granted by the previous administration.

Sabrina Carpenter Drops Surprise Digital Single ‘Such A Funny Way’ For Devoted Listeners

0

Instagram/@sabrinacarpenter

Unpredictability is the forte that has been blessed upon the audience by Sabrina Carpenter herself by way of the encore track. An available exclusive digital single, the song “Such A Funny Way” is one which she holds dearly and regards as an alternate universe ending to the album ‘Mans Best Friend’. What unfolds in reaction to the surprise release has been nothing short of hysteria, with some rushing to purchase the song whereas others are begging for it to be made available on streaming services.

Plot twist! The more Sabrina goes off the deep end, the more intriguing it all gets. Just when you thought the ‘Mans Best Friend’ story was wrapped up, she closes the chapter and then opens it back up with an additional explanation. In her latest Instagram post, Sabrina perches on a vintage-styled bed, her hand holding a beam-white telephone to her ear-looking just like the nostalgic dreamer her songs translate to.

Yet she terms it as “a little surprise,” which evergreen fans would consider akin to Christmas morning. The track is deeply meaningful to her and one that could’ve been the sentiment to close the album in a parallel universe. And really, it is that kind of creative insight that keeps people glued to her every move.

And this is where she spices it up: she released it as a digital download-only for now. So, if you want to get your ears on the track ASAP, you’ve got to get out and buy it. No waiting for any streaming service to pick it up; no skipping through commercial advertisements. It’s all a direct artist support.

The comments? Total chaos, and I mean it in a great way. One excited fan quietly screamed, “SHE STAYS FEEDING US OMG”-capturing those moments of being constantly spoiled by an artist who genuinely cares about her audience. Another simply adds, “I love a good Sabrina surprise!!!” Me too.

On the other hand, not every person was thrilled with this way of distributing. Demands for streaming began to skyrocket: “Okay funny now put it on streaming :)”, said one commenter. This sparked a whole thread about supporting artists vs. ease of access.

Some people got real passionate about the digital download battle. One user shot back angrily to the critics: “You do realize Spotify pays artists .005 cents per stream. Which means you would have to listen to a song 200 times for them to make even a dollar! Supporting your fav artists shouldn’t be considered a burden.” OK, those are some pretty darn good points!

Then the inevitable Taylor Swift comparison. Because apparently, you cannot utter the phrase “clever females” without also mentioning the silver-haired, platinum blonde chanteuse. “She really is Taylor Swift’s goddaughter. She taught her well!!!” one comment read, referring to the similar strategy of releasing additional content post-albums. Then, others jumped in, proclaiming that Sabrina deserves her own spotlight.

Amidst the chaos, one fan confesses to everyone: “I bought this in a heartbeat. I am a firm believer in Such a Funny Way being the best song on this album. Only you could make me do it lol.” Now that’s what artists want to hear!

The digital download vs streaming discussion showed how much the path to success has evolved in this industry. One user expresses confusion asking, “What the hell is a digital download”— there is a glimpse of how young listeners have grown in a streaming era. Others even offered practical solutions, claiming, “download it somewhere from someone and add it to your local file” if they want to incorporate it into their streaming library.

International fans also felt the need to get on the platform—one says, “mother pls make it available outside US too,” showcasing the internationalism of fandom and the complications attached to regional release.

What spells clear amidst the noise is that Sabrina Carpenter knows her crowd and knows how to create moments that feel personal and special. Whether you’re buying the digital download or waiting for it to hit the streaming platforms, the buzz around this release really proves how her relationship with her listeners goes beyond just the music — it is about the entire experience.

And all in all, this surprise drop is a special occasion. Sabrina Carpenter has created such a release by going against the tide. She has given the fans a bit of head start while promoting direct support, and the mixed reactions have gotten people talking —which is, in this day and age, half the battle.

Here’s how a 1-year-old could enjoy a £50,000 second income at 32 years old

0

Ok, I’m going to use the example of my one-year-old. She has a Junior Stocks & Shares ISA, which we opened at her birth, and it’s going well. She currently has around £16,000 in there — not enough for a second income — which has built up over the last 20 months or so, driven in part by US-tech exposure.

So, how does this all work? Well, my family elects to put £500 a month into her ISA, and this is typically invested in one or two stocks a month. As the above suggests, we’ve done a little better than the standard 10%, however, that’s my aim over the long run.

If this process were kept up for 30 years, and assuming 10% annualised returns over the period, well, the portfolio would reach £1.18m before her 32nd birthday. That’s enough to generate a second income worth around £50,000. That’s assuming a yield below 5%.

Starting from scratch

Starting from scratch, anyone could achieve something similar for their children, even with more modest assumptions. Historically, global stock markets have averaged around 8% per year, which makes a useful baseline.

With consistent monthly contributions and the power of compounding, relatively small sums can grow into life-changing amounts over time. For instance, investing £250 a month at 8% annualised returns would build a pot of around £370,000 after 30 years. Double that to £500 a month, and the total could exceed £740,000.

Crucially, the earlier the account is opened, the more compounding works in the investor’s favour — gains begin to generate their own gains, snowballing over decades.

What’s more, parents don’t need to be stock-pickers to achieve this, either — a low-cost global tracker fund would likely suffice. The key is discipline and time.

Investing to beat the market

Of course, investors may want to try and beat the market for their little ones. This could mean investing in one or two stocks a month in an effort to outperform indexes like the FTSE 100.

Jet2 (LSE:JET2) is, in my view, a company well worth considering for investors seeking value in the travel sector. Analysts are bullish, and a core reason is its exceptionally strong balance sheet. The airline holds net cash of around £2.2bn. This figure, which includes customers’ deposits, is expected to rise close to £2.5bn by 2027.

And despite the addition of customer deposits to that figure, it still leaves Jet2 trading on unusually low cash-adjusted valuations. For 2025, the EV-to-EBITDA ratio is around 0.9, that’s far beneath sector norms.

Added to this, Jet2 is refreshing its fleet without excessive borrowing, enjoying the support of lower fuel prices, and benefitting from strong brand positioning. However, investors should certainly be wary of the impact of higher national insurance contributions and wages. These are already pushing costs upwards.

Nonetheless, I certainly believe it’s well worth considering, especially when we consider that analysts believe it’s undervalued by around 34%.

A brush fire ignited Friday evening near Jurupa Valley, prompting evacuation orders in the nearby communities of Jurupa Hills and Sunnyslope.

Dubbed the Pyrite fire, it was reported at 5:19 p.m. as a 15-acre vegetation fire burning in “light flashy fuels” near Pyrite Street and Granite Hills Drive, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Riverside Unit.

The blaze had grown to 200 acres by 8 p.m., leading authorities to expand evacuation warnings as hand crews and a firefighting helicopter worked to combat the flames. A map of affected areas can be viewed here.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker Says ‘Real Reason’ Trump Wants to Send the National Guard to Chicago is to Interfere With Elections (VIDEO) | The Gateway Pundit

0

Screencap of Twitter/X video.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker recently appeared on MSNBC with Jen Psaki, the former White House press secretary for Joe Biden and pushed conspiracy theories about President Trump with zero pushback from the host.

Pritzker claimed that Trump does not want to send National Guard troops to Chicago to help deal with crime or even to help ICE arrest illegal aliens, but because he wants to ‘set the stage to interfere in future elections.’

Watch:

In another segment from the same interview, Pritzker pats himself on the back for the supposedly great job he and other leaders have done in reducing crime, despite the bloodbath that happened in Chicago just last weekend. Not how Jen Psaki nods along, offering no pushback whatsoever.

Pritzker is putting his political ambitions ahead of the safety of the people of Chicago. He knows that if he isn’t perceived as fighting everything Trump does, the base of the Democrat party will turn on him instantly.

In this way, Democrats are being held hostage by the base of their own party, and outlets like MSNBC are making the problem worse.

Parents are embracing the latest ‘school gate glow up’ trend

0

With the new school term having commenced on September 1, parents across the nation are experiencing a new phenomenon. This latest positive transformation is about more than just appearance — it’s a step forward in fostering community and building stronger connections. It also reflects that back-to-school isn’t just for the children — it’s a fresh start for parents too.

Dubbed the “school gate glow up” — this latest trend is for those parents who are on weight loss journeys. Fresh findings from Chemist4U show that a staggering 91 per cent of parents undertaking weight loss injection programmes now feel prepared to strike up conversations with other  parents during drop-off and pick-ups.

This burgeoning self-assurance isn’t merely facilitating easier connections amongst parents but is simultaneously cultivating fresh friendships and more robust school communities. Spearheading this movement are parents from London (95%), the North East (94%), and Scotland (94%), claiming the top spots as the most self-assured regions.

For numerous parents pursuing weight loss goals, confidence can present a significant obstacle. Indeed, almost a quarter of parents (19%) seldom started conversations with others, a statistic climbing higher amongst younger parents aged 16-24 (29%) and older parents beyond 55 (45%).

The explanations differed by gender with 41% of mothers highlighting self-consciousness, whilst fathers frequently identified lack of confidence (35%) or fear of judgement (32%). Today, a significant 60% of mothers and 57% of fathers on their weight loss injection journey report a noticeable difference in their appearance.

For nearly one-third (31%), the transformation is so dramatic that they feel entirely unrecognisable compared to last term, particularly among parents aged 35-44 (34%).

This surge in self-confidence is permeating into social interactions, with a whopping 93% of parents now feeling more self-assured when engaging in conversations during school drop-offs and pick-ups. The outcome? A friendlier, more inviting environment where parents feel at ease connecting with each other.

James Murphy, Head of Pharmacy and weight loss injection expert at Chemist4U, remarks: “The ‘school gate glow up’ shows that back-to-school isn’t just about the kids, it’s a fresh start for parents too. Many are celebrating weight loss wins but it goes far beyond that as they are experiencing boosted energy and a renewed confidence that’s spilling over into every part of life.

“Parents are not only feeling healthier and happier but also building new friendships and stronger community bonds. It’s amazing to see how small changes in wellbeing can lead to gains like these.”

Daily routines are also undergoing a change. Last term, over two-thirds (69%) of parents drove and dropped their children off outside the school gates, with 35% of those remaining in the car while their children entered the school.

This term, a quarter of parents (25%) who previously drove are planning to switch to walking, or at least park nearby and walk the rest of the way to the school gates. The trend is even more pronounced among younger parents, with 30% of those aged 16–24 and 28% of those aged 25–34 making the change.

These minor changes are creating more opportunities for parents to engage, initiate chats, and forge stronger friendships.

‘Volnado’ spins skyward as Hawaii’s Kīlauea volcano erupts

0

A live camera at Hawaiʻi’s Kīlauea volcano captured a rare sight this week — a swirling “volnado” forming next to a fountain of lava, the latest dramatic reminder of the mountain’s restless nature.

The video released by the US Geological Survey (USGS) shows a column of ash sucked into a whirling vortex as molten rock bursts skyward.

The spinning cloud resembled a tornado — but with volcanic heat fueling its rise.

“We know you’ve heard of a volcano … but how about a volnado?” the USGS joked in a social media post that quickly spread across science and nature forums.

A live USGS camera captured a rare “volnado” swirling beside a lava fountain at Hawaiʻi’s Kīlauea volcano.
USGS Volcanoes/X

According to scientists, these whirlwinds appear when scorching air from erupting lava collides with cooler air above the crater. The turbulent mix can twist into a visible vortex, sometimes carrying ash and gas hundreds of feet into the sky.

Ash and gas twist skyward in a fiery vortex during Kīlauea’s 32nd eruption since December. USGS Volcanoes/X

This week’s activity marked the 32nd eruptive episode at Kīlauea since December, underscoring the volcano’s reputation as one of the most active on Earth. The eruption ended abruptly overnight, and officials said no homes or communities were threatened.

Kīlauea, located on Hawaiʻi’s Big Island about 200 miles south of Honolulu, sits within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.

Scientists say “volnados” form when scorching volcanic air collides with cooler currents above the crater. USGS Volcanoes/X

Its Halemaʻumaʻu crater — long considered in Hawaiian tradition the home of the volcano goddess Pele — has been dramatically reshaped in recent years.

A massive 2018 collapse carved out new landscapes, while more recent eruptions have built fresh lava lakes and gas vents.

The Halemaʻumaʻu crater, long tied to the goddess Pele in Hawaiian tradition, erupted with both lava and a swirling ash cloud. USGS Volcanoes/X

The USGS maintains several livestream cameras trained on the crater, offering the public a rare real-time look at volcanic activity.

Volcanologists frequently track the feeds because they provide valuable data on eruption dynamics.

For visitors and residents, they are a mesmerizing window into the forces shaping the island.

Scientists stress that while “volnados” may look unusual, they are not entirely unexpected. Similar whirlwinds have been documented during past Kīlauea eruptions, as well as at volcanoes in Alaska and Iceland.

They rarely pose additional hazards beyond the eruption itself.

The DOJ’s trans gun ban is a terrible idea — but it’s exposing the hypocrisy of the Dems

0

Was floating a ban on trans people owning guns just some basement-level idiot’s idea for “owning the libs”?

In the wake of Robin Westman’s deadly Minneapolis rampage, some troll in the bowels of the Trump Justice Department reportedly proposed blocking trans people from buying firearms by declaring them all “mentally ill.”

This, of course, is absurd as a simple matter of law: No rule that strips a (dubiously-defined) group of their Second Amendment rights has any chance of holding up in court.

And if it did somehow survive, that’s an open invitation for future progs to create their own “mentally ill by definition” categories — deployable to limit lots of other rights.

Something even the lowliest staffer at Justice should be capable of realizing.

The giggles, we’d guess, are supposed to come from making lefties choose between sacred cows — gun control or trans rights.

Or maybe, hah hah hah, embarrass progressives by making them side with the NRA.

We hope it turns out to just be gossip among summer interns on their way back to college.

Because if any permanent employees are involved, Attorney General Pam Bondi should give them the same heave-ho as the Subway-sandwich tosser.
