What to know about temporary housing, rents, price gouging during fire storm

0

The Palisades and Eaton fires have burned thousands of homes in Los Angeles County, in the process creating refugees in a region with a persistent housing shortage.

For now, many of the displaced are staying in hotels, shelters or with friends and family. Others may be searching for a more permanent home in a rental. Many more will join them soon.

If you are looking to place to stay, here are some things you should know.

TEMPORARY HOUSING

AirBnB.org, a nonprofit that works with AirBnB hosts, is providing free, temporary housing for those displaced by the fires.

Those in need of housing can fill out an application here with 211 LA, an organization partnering with AirBnB.org on the effort.

Local hotels are also offering discounted rates, with more information available here and here.

PRICE GOUGING

Earlier this week, Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in Los Angeles County, a declaration that establishes protections against price gouging.

That means landlords can generally not charge more than 10% above what they were charging or advertising before the state of emergency, which took effect on January 7, according to the California Attorney General’s office. These price gouging protections also apply beyond the housing market to items like food, gas and medical supplies.

If a home was not rented or advertised before the state of emergency, there are protections as well. In such a case, the attorney general’s office says landlords can’t charge more than 160% of fair market value as determined by the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development.

California Atty. General Rob Bonta has encouraged the public to report price gouging to his office by using an online form available here.

Price gouging protections generally are in place for 30 days following the declaration of a state of emergency, but can be extended.

The tenant advocacy group Coalition for Economic Survival is also holding Saturday workshops for existing renters and those now in need of a rental to learn more about their rights.

INSURANCE CLAIMS

If your home was completely destroyed, your insurance company must immediately pay you a minimum of four months’ worth of rent for the local area in which you live.

You should contact your insurer and start the process as soon as you are in a safe place. More information on dealing with your insurance company, including on issues of rebuilding, can be found here.

An Apple TV+ teaser image for the second season of ‘Severance’

Apple has made the Apple TV+ show “Severance” available on the Roku Channel for a limited time to promote the second season.

The Apple TV+ workplace thriller “Severance” is arriving back on the service on January 17. As part of its promotion of the show, Apple is giving Roku owners an opportunity to catch up.

The entire first season of the show will be available on the Roku Channel as part of an “exclusive fan experience,” from now until January 19. Included with the season, the channel will also preview the second season of the show and offer behind-the-scenes content, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Viewers will also be able to claim a three-month trial of Apple TV+.

The effort is a highly promotional one for Apple, as it will be directly accessible from the Roku home screen. With approximately 90 million users, it’s a massive opportunity for subscriber outreach for Apple.

“Partnering with Apple ahead of the highly anticipated Severance season 2 and being able to create an exclusive fan experience that is available to millions of U.S. households, including offering Apple TV+ content outside of the Apple ecosystem, on the Roku Channel for the first time ever, is incredibly exciting for us,” according to Roku VP of growth marketing and merchandising, Sweta Patel.

“Part of the magic of the Roku platform is that we can work with our brand partners to create bespoke experiences that our viewers love and achieve our partner’s goals.”

The free period and three-month trial offer follows after a free weekend for the service overall. Apple has also been expanding the reach of Apple TV, making a deal to offer content through Amazon Prime Video Channels.

Sorry haters, but UFC champ Jon Jones beats Tom Aspinall at his own game — ‘He’s a master at this’

0

UFC CEO, Dana White, said the heavyweight title fight between reigning division champion, Jon Jones, and current interim titleholder, Tom Aspinall, is 100-percent guaranteed to happen in 2025, while batting down rumors of “f—k you money” and potential retirement.

So please, stop whining.

Despite his emphatic victory over former 265-pound kingpin, Stipe Miocic, the 37 year-old Jones is no longer the favorite to defeat Aspinall, several years younger than Jones at 31. But don’t count Cain Velasquez among the many insiders picking against “Bones.”

“No, I don’t think he [beats Jon Jones],” the former UFC heavyweight champion told Ariel Helwani. “Me, just watching him, I kind of see his pattern a little bit in his striking, the way he comes in and strikes. I think Jon sees it too. So, I think with that — Jon studies. He does his homework. He’s a master at this. He analyzes things, he studies you over and over again. I think just for that reason, he’s going to know what to do. So I don’t think [Aspinall] beats Jon. Everybody has a fight pattern. Some people disguise it better than others. The simple fact is the way Tom, the way that he comes in and fights, he has a pattern that’s somewhat easier to find.”

Jones, certified evil genius, appears to have revived his mystique at UFC 309.

“When he comes in and strikes, a lot of things come with that,” Velasquez continued. “It’s disguising the pattern, it’s throwing fakes before. But when he comes in and attacks, he comes in and attacks. It’s 100 percent, full go. He comes in and glides in, lunges in, and does his attack. Not that it’s not effective, it is. He’s done great things with it. Look where he’s at now. I’m not taking anything away from him. But I think that the type of guy that Jon Jones is, I think he studies him and he beats him because of that.”

Negotiations for Jones vs. Aspinall are currently underway.

Will ‘biggest ever Christmas’ help keep the Tesco share price climbing in 2025?

0

The Tesco (LSE: TSCO) share price didn’t do much on Thursday morning (9 January), after the supermarket giant posted a strong trading update for the festive season.

That’s despite CEO Ken Murphy telling us that “we delivered our biggest ever Christmas, with continued market share growth and switching gains.”

He went on to describe Tesco as “the UK’s cheapest full-line grocer for over two years.”

Market share

The third quarter to 23 November, saw a 2.8% rise in total like-for-like sales. And then a bumper 3.8% Christmas lift pushed sales up 3.1% overall for the combined 19-week period.

Perhaps more importantly for the long term, the company said it hit its highest market share since 2016.

Kantar Worldpanel gives Tesco 28.5% of British market share as of 29 December. It’s edged up 1.2 percentage points in the past five years. Aldi and Lidl also gained over the same period, with Asda and Morrisons losing out.

The threat from the cheapies isn’t over. But they haven’t made the inroads that Tesco shareholders might have feared. And we’ve had a tough inflationary time for shoppers too, when the ‘pile it high, sell it cheap’ retailers should have enjoyed an advantage.

Cracking two years

Is the subdued market reaction on the day a surprise or a disappointment? No, I don’t think so, not looking at the recent past. The Tesco share price is already up 19% in the past 12 months, and 47% over two years.

It looks like the 2024-25 year is going in line with forecasts. So this healthy trading was largely expected. Much of the optimism will have already been built in to the share price. And it’s likely that some investors will have been taking some profit off the table.

For the full year, Tesco expects to see around £2.9bn in retail adjusted operating profit. And retail free cash flow should be within the range of £1.4bn to £1.8bn.

Finest

Tesco’s success in the past couple of years has to be down to its two-pronged attack on its rivals.

At one end of the scale, the latest update spoke of a “traditional Christmas dinner available at a 12% lower price year on year.” And that’s got to be the way to lure customers away from Aldi and Lidl.

And the company also reported a 15.5% rise in sales of Finest brand products, taking the challenge to its traditionally more upmarket rivals like Waitrose and J Sainsbury.

What it means

Forecasts put Tesco shares on a full-year price-to-earnings ratio of close to 14. For my money, I think that would probably price the stock about right, with a modest forecast dividend yield of 3.4%.

I might buy Tesco some day. But this year, I’ll be aiming for bigger FTSE 100 dividends.

Still, looking at the Tesco share price history of the past two years, buying sector leaders when their prices are down has to be a strategy worth considering for long-term investors, doesn’t it?

5 investment trusts to consider for a new 2025 ISA

0

Are investment trusts the best thing ever? They might be.

Here are five I think anyone starting a Stocks and Shares ISA in 2025 could do well to consider. I already bought two of them myself.

The key attractions for me? An investment trust can provide diversification in just a single purchase. And we have a whole range of investing strategies to choose from.

Five top trusts

Stock Strategy 5-year price
change
Forecast
dividend yield
Dividend rises
(years)
Premium/
discount
City of London
Investment Trust
UK equity income -2.4% 4.9% 58 -1.1%

Bankers
Investment Trust
Global +17% 2.4% 57 -13%
Scottish Mortgage
Investment Trust

Global +68% 1.8% 42 -12%
Schroder
Oriental Income
Asia Pacific

+11% 4.3% 18 -6.5%
Source: Association of Investment Companies

I’d challenge anyone to pick five stocks for a new ISA that can equal this lot for diversification — in both industries and global spread.

The first thing I note is that Premium/discount column. A negative number means a stock is selling for less than the net asset value (NAV) of the things it invests in.

On that score, these look cheap. But a discount also reflects the risk that the market sees in an investment trust.

Cheap vs risky

Look at Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust. The risk comes from the stocks it puts its shareholders’ money in. We’re talking high-flying Nasdaq stocks here — the so-called Magnificent 7 of artificial intelligence (AI), and the rest.

Scottish Mortgage holds Amazon, Nvidia, Tesla… and a few analysts are calling an AI bubble right now.

The Nasdaq has even been easing a bit after hitting an all-time high in September. But I think it’s way too early to give up on world-leading tech stocks, at least with my investing horizon of at least five years.

With that outlook in mind, I think the 12% discount has to make Scottish Mortgage a worthwhile consideration for those who want a more diversified tech growth investment.

Better bargain

Bankers Investment Trust is on a similar discount, with investments in some of the same Nasdaq stocks. But its also holds stocks like Visa and Chevron. It looks less exposed to tech stock risk to me. And I wonder if it might be an underpriced anomaly. I need to dig deeper.

I’m also surprised by the difference in discounts between City of London and Murray Income Trust. They’re very similar in their strategies, dividends, and holdings. Both include Unilever, AstraZeneca, and RELX in their top 10, plus other top FTSE 100 shares.

I wonder if the fact that Murray Income is managed by abrdn might have anything to do with it? That company is out of favour with investors, down 20% in the past 12 months. Again, more research needed.

Good mix

These trusts I’ve looked at have all raised their annual dividends for many years. If any should falter one year, that’s a share price risk (on top of any specific strategy risk).

But looking at the current discounts, there’s a very good chance I’ll add another of these five to my 2025 ISA.

Hargreaves Lansdown’s clients are buying loads of this US growth stock. Should I?

0

MicroStrategy (NASDAQ:MSTR) is a growth stock with an unusual history. It started life as a software company but in late 2020, it began buying cryptocurrency as a means of shoring up its balance sheet. It now claims to be the “largest corporate holder of Bitcoin in the world”.

And it appears to have caught the attention of many investors on both sides of the Atlantic.

Of the 11 US analysts covering the company, 10 consider it a Buy.

Closer to home, during the week ended 3 January, it was the most popular stock with Hargreaves Lansdown’s clients. Of all that week’s purchases on the platform, MicroStrategy saw the most activity, both in terms of trades (3.21%) and the value of deals placed (5.04%).

An extended bull run

Not surprisingly, this interest has helped drive its price higher.

Since January 2024, it’s increased by 470%.

And this impressive performance shows no signs of slowing down. Helped by the prospect of a second Trump presidency (he’s seen as being more pro-crypto than Joe Biden) during the first eight days of 2025, the stock’s up 18%. Past performance is not an indicator of future performance though, of course.

But a closer look at the statistics is revealing.

Although it was the post-Christmas number one with Hargreaves Lansdown’s buyers, it was also popular with sellers, accounting for 4.55% of all trades.

This could be a sign that the stock’s being bought with a view to making a quick profit, rather than for its long-term growth prospects.

It might also explain why it’s the most volatile stock on the S&P 500. Although its done well in 2025, I think it’s worth noting that it’s fallen 28% from its November 2024 peak.

Looking to the future

But the company does have a growth strategy, albeit a simple one. It plans to buy more Bitcoin, and lots of it.

Over the next three years, it hopes to purchase $42bn of the digital asset.

However, given that MicroStrategy’s software business isn’t cash generative — during the nine months ended 30 September 2024, it reported a post-tax loss of $48m — all of the funds will have to come from a combination of debt ($21bn) and equity ($21bn).

And as long as Bitcoin doesn’t crash, I’m sure everything will be okay. Otherwise, I fear it’ll be catastrophic for the company and its shareholders.

The content in this article is provided for information purposes only. It is not intended to be, neither does it constitute, any form of investment advice. Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies are highly speculative and volatile assets, which carry several risks, including the total loss of any monies invested. Readers are responsible for carrying out their own due diligence and for obtaining professional advice before making any investment decisions.

Leverage

Latest reports suggest that the company currently owns 447,470 Bitcoin, worth approximately $43bn. Its market cap is $84bn — 95% higher.

In other words, investors are happy to pay more for the Bitcoin held by MicroStrategy than if they bought it directly themselves.

To my surprise, this means its share price has outperformed the value of the cryptocurrency over the past 12 months by a factor of four.

This doesn’t appear sustainable to me.

And it suggests that if the value of Bitcoin falls, the stock market valuation of MicroStrategy will crash by a lot more.

Personally, I don’t want to add this level of risk (or volatility) to my share portfolio. I’m therefore going to steer clear of MicroStrategy, despite the hype surrounding the stock.

Sock It To Me Cake

This website may contain affiliate links and advertising so that we can provide recipes to you. Read my disclosure policy.

This Sock It to Me Cake is a moist, buttery Southern bundt cake with a delicious cinnamonsugar pecan layer swirled through the middle. It became popular because of Duncan Hines in the 1960s and 1970s, and you’ll understand why once you try it!

Side shot of a slice of sock it to me cake on a plate. Side shot of a slice of sock it to me cake on a plate.

Reasons You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Easy to Make: This cake recipe is quite simple to put together. It does take some time to bake. Make sure you follow my tips so your cake comes out of the pan easily!
  • Fantastic Flavor: The soft buttery cake with the ooey, gooey, crunchy, cinnamon, and sugar pecan layer is to die for.

Just Like My Grandma Made It

As a kid, I never understood why adults loved nuts in their desserts. Now that I have a more adult taste, I get it! Pecans mixed with butter, sugar, and cinnamon are one of my favorites! Take that and swirl it through a buttery cake, ‘sock it to me’! If you love recipes with this flavor profile as much as I do, you could try my 1 hour caramel sticky buns, cinnamon french toast bake, or my pecan pie cobbler.

How to Make Sock It To Me Cake

This cake comes together quickly but takes a while to bake. Just make sure you take the time to prep your bundt pan so your cake comes out clean!

  1. Prep: Preheat the oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Prepare a bundt pan by coating the inside with melted shortening and a light dusting of flour. Tap out any excess. Or you can use a baking spray that has flour in it. Sift the flour, baking soda, and salt in a medium bowl and set aside. In a stand mixer, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed.
  2. Beat: Add the eggs one at a time. Beat well after each addition. Add the sour cream and vanilla. Scrape down the bottom and sides of the bowl.
  3. Combine: At low speed, gradually add the flour mixture and combine it fully.
  4. Sock is to me Cake Streusel Filling: Combine the pecans, brown sugar, and cinnamon in a small bowl.
  5. Spread: Pour half of the batter into the prepared pan and spread it out evenly. Sprinkle the pecan mixture evenly over the batter.
  6. Bake: Top with the remaining cake batter and smooth it over the top. Bake for about 80 minutes or until a toothpick comes out nearly completely clean from the center of the cake. It Should only have a few crumbs clinging to it. Let the cake cool in the pan for only 5 minutes before inverting it onto a cooling rack and removing the pan to let it cool completely.
  7. Glaze: Once the cake has cooled, make the glaze. Whisk the powdered sugar and milk in a small bowl until smooth. Drizzle over the top of the cake.

Cake Release Tips:

  • Make sure to coat the pan! To release a bundt cake easily, coat the pan with a flour-based baking spray like Baker’s Joy. Or a regular spray with a dusting of flour and tapping out excess. Blot pooled spray with a paper towel before flouring, or use melted shortening instead. Avoid butter, as it can cause sticking. Some bakers dust with sugar, but I prefer flour.
  • Only let the cake cool in the pan for only 5 minutes before flipping it over. If bundt cakes cool too long in the pan, they can stick and fall apart.
  • Loosen it Up! If you find your cake is still sticking to the pan, try sliding a dull knife or spatula down around the edges. I like using small metal frosting spatulas to loosen it from the pan.
Side shot of sock it to me cake on a cooling rack. Side shot of sock it to me cake on a cooling rack.

Sock It To Me Cake Tips and Variations

  • Is your Glaze Tinted Brown? You can add 1-3 teaspoons of vanilla extract to the glaze. Regular vanilla will tint the glaze brown. You can use clear vanilla if you want to keep it white! Be sure to reduce the milk by one tablespoon if you do.
  • Save time and ingredients. Use a cake mix! You can replace the cake portion of this cake with a boxed cake mix! Prepare the batter according to the directions on the box and use it in place of the cake batter in the recipe card.
  • Don’t have a bundt pan? I’ve got you covered! You can bake this cake in a 9 × 13 x 2-inch pan or two 8-inch round cake pans. Adjust the baking time to 45 minutes before checking the center for doneness with a toothpick. Continue to bake as needed. I would flip the round cakes onto a cooling rack when finished baking, but I would keep the sheet cake in the pan.

How to Store Leftover Sock it To Me Cake

  • Room Temperature: This cake can be stored in a large airtight container at room temperature for 3-4 days.
  • Fridge: You can keep it a few days longer in the fridge, but bring it to room temperature before serving. Be aware that the glaze will weep and become very sticky if you choose to chill the cake in the fridge.
  • Freeze: You can also freeze Sock It To Me Cake for up to 3 months. Tightly wrap it in a couple of layers of plastic wrap. Then, cover it in heavy-duty aluminum foil and place it in a freezer-safe bag. I suggest keeping the glaze off until after you decide to thaw and serve. The glaze will weep and melt into the cake as it thaws.

‘It’ Director Confirms Stephen King’s Involvement in ‘Welcome to Derry’

0

Andy Muschietti, the director of the horror adaptation It (both chapters) and the terribly underrated Mama, is the showrunner of the upcoming Stephen King miniseries It: Welcome to Derry. Even though it’s edgy to say that it’s a Stephen King show (it’s not exactly based on one of his books), per Muschietti’s comments, we could be on the right track.

Muschietti, who’s also working as a producer and director of four of the series’ nine episodes, spoke to Radio TU about Welcome to Derry and expanded on which stories will be told in the series. The series takes place in 1962, 27 years before the events of Muschietti’s movie It (a variation from part one of the original story in the book, which takes place between 1957 and 1958), and it follows several residents of the town of Derry being terrorized by the evil entity that comes out every 27 years to feed itself.

While It: Welcome to Derry is clearly inspired by the source material and will even feature the return of Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise, it is not entirely based on King’s book. Well, at least the storylines, because, per Muschietti: “the series also focuses on the interludes that are being investigated by Mike Hanlon in the book.” He says that the show takes place in the middle of the Cold War and the nuclear panic:

“There’s fear of a nuclear crisis and problems associated with genetic and radioactive malformations. All the kids fear the atomic bomb, and It’s manifestations also have to do with that.”

How Involved Is Stephen King in ‘It: Welcome to Derry’?

The showrunner also commented on how involved Stephen King was during the production of the show. The writer usually works as an advisor on his adaptations, and he simply likes some better than others. He was heavily involved in It, even having a cameo in It: Chapter Two. Muschietti confirmed he was also a part of the creative process for It: Welcome to Derry:

“Stephen King has to approve everything. But it was really informal this time. I’ve had a close relationship with Stephen King since I made the movies. He writes to me, and I write him back. It’s an honor for me, and I consider him a friend.

One day, I wrote to him and said, ‘We have this idea, which is to develop the interludes in a miniseries that will take place before the events of the movie,’ and he loved it. He said, ‘Let’s do it!’

Obviously, as we progressed, we kept showing him the work, and he approved the first draft of the script. Then we showed him where we would take the future seasons of the show. He trusts us because of what we did with the movies, which he loved as much as audiences did.”

It will just be a younger version of the salesman at the second-hand store. Meanwhile, the director also said HBO is “pretty happy with Season 1 of the show, and they want Season 2 to start shooting right away.”
