Marvin Vettori will return to the Octagon for a main event clash against fellow middleweight contender, Roman Dolidze, at UFC Vegas 104 on March 15 from inside UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada, but “Italian Dream” thought he was fighting Roman Kopylov all along.
On Friday, news leaked that Vettori will return to action for the first time in nearly two years when the Italian contender fights Dolidze in two months. Fight fans were excited to see the news because Vettori has been a staple of the UFC middleweight division over the past five years and even fought Israel Adesanya for the 185-pound title back in 2021. Vettori already defeated Dolidze by way of unanimous decision back in early 2023, but most were unbothered by the booked rematch.
After seeing the announcement of his UFC Vegas 104 main event spot, Vettori took to X to reveal that he thought he was fighting someone else the entire time. Instead of Roman Dolidze, Vettori was under the impression he was signing on to fight Roman Kopylov, who is coming off a spectacular knockout finish over Chris Curtis at UFC Vegas 101 earlier this month. Vettori’s post seemed to be a real reaction rather than a poor attempt at trolling Dolidze, but we’ll let you be the judge.
lol this whole time I thought it’s Roman kopylov but it’s actually Roman dolidze
All good different last name same result— Marvin Vettori (@MarvinVettori) January 24, 2025
“lol this whole time I thought it’s Roman kopylov but it’s actually Roman Dolidze,” wrote Vettori. “All good different last name same result.”
While fighters are always being randomly linked to fights that actually never materialize, it’s rare to see a top-ranked contender sign the dotted line for a main event showcase and not know exactly who he’s fighting. After all, Dolidze and Kopylov are two completely different fighters with major differences in their skillsets and strengths.
Good thing Vettori eventually came to his senses so he can properly train for the right opponent.
