With several former Marvel/Netflix stars joining the MCU in Daredevil: Born Again, Krysten Ritter is throwing her hat in the ring for Jessica Jones to get her own Disney+ series in the future. Ritter played Jessica Jones in her eponymous Marvel series, which ran for three seasons on Netflix between 2015 and 2019, with the character also joining her fellow Marvel Netflix stars, Iron Fist, Daredevil, and Luke Cage, in The Defenders in 2017. Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) leads Born Again, and has been joined by The Punisher (Jon Bernthal), Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson), Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll), Bullseye (Wilson Bethel), and many more already. Here’s hoping there’s room for one more in Season 2.
During an appearance on CBS Morning to promote her new novel, Retreat, Krysten Ritter was asked about joining the ranks of the MCU as Jessica Jones, either in Daredevil: Born Again or in her own series. When asked about returning, Ritter went cautiously quiet, before saying “Listen, I love Jessica Jones and I think it’s so exciting that there seems to be such an appetite to see her again.” As you’d expect, the hosts of CBS Mornings are far from the first people to ask the actress about returning, and her answer still hasn’t changed. She continued:
“I get asked about it almost every day and, you know, we remain cautiously optimistic. And I hope I get to join it.”
The hosts responded to her answer by asking how eager she is to join the frey in Daredevil: Born Again. Ritter seems incredibly enthusiastic about returning as Jessica Jones, going so far as to say, “Of course, if they asked me I would be there, ready.” It would be easy for Krysten Ritter to get back into character to play the complex private detective, Jesica Jones, especially as she took a few mementos from the original series. The actress continued:
“I may or may not have the jacket that I stole from set the first time.”
The MCU Needs Characters Like ‘Jessica Jones’
Season 1 of Jessica Jones was another hit for Marvel Television when it debuted in 2015. Despite Seasons 2 and 3 of the show not being anywhere near as strong, fans still loved Ritter’s performance as the titular “hero.” Of course, Jessica Jones joining the MCU would build off the success of Daredevil: Born Again. But, she is exactly the type of character the franchise needs right now.
One of the biggest complaints currently levelled against the MCU by fans is that, because of the Multiverse Saga and the endless different timelines, it feels like nothing has consequences. Daredevil: Born Again has been such a hit so far partly because it brought the franchise back down to Earth. Bringing characters like Jessica Jones, who are far less powerful than The Hulk or Thor, but far more grounded and realistic would help the MCU recover the stakes and depth that it has lost. Daredevil: Born Again is currently streaming on Disney+. New episodes are released weekly.
