Today (Weds., March 12, 2025), sitting United States President, Donald Trump, met with Ireland’s Taoiseach (also known as Ireland’s prime minister), Micheal Martin, inside the Oval Office as part of his St. Patrick’s Day engagements.
After discussing a wide array of political topics, Trump and Martin began answering questions from reporters in attendance. When Trump was asked who his favorite Irish person is (hint: it’s not Cillian Murphy), the 47th President named former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) double champion, Conor McGregor?
“Oh, there’s so many—are you kidding me? Well, I do happen to like your fighter; he’s got the best tattoos I’ve ever seen,” Trump said. “Conor’s great, right? I’m talking about Conor, but you have a lot of great Irish fighters, actually. Great fighters.”
“I don’t know what that is, but Ireland’s always had a lot of really good fighters. You know why? Because they’re tough people,” Trump concluded. “They’re smart people, and they’re passionate people.”
It’s somewhat unsurprising that Trump would immediately mention a mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter as his favorite Irish person, given that he has been a massive fan of the sport for over two decades at this point.
But, there is stuff like this.
Nevertheless, the feeling is mutual for McGregor, as the Irish superstar has long been a supporter of Trump and even attended his inauguration earlier this year in Washington, D.C.— despite the President of the United States calling Khabib Nurmagomedov his favorite fighter.
Perhaps Trump will be the one to push McGregor back into the Octagon, as “Notorious” has not competed since breaking his leg (see it here) against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 (almost four years ago).
