This is a unique turn of events considering Kevin Sussman’s history with TBBT, and the actor was originally slated to play one of the main characters before being recast.

The existence of another Big Bang Theory spinoff was officially announced on April 12, 2023, just as Young Sheldon was approaching the end of its sixth season (via Screen Rant). Almost nothing was given away regarding the show’s story or cast, but the most important information was that Chuck Lorre would be returning to oversee the project. However, Lorre walked back the previous announcement in November 2023, when he made it clear that no plan was in the works. How the misinformation was spread is unclear, but the fate of the Big Bang Theory spinoff was unclear at that point.
Lorre would again contradict himself when, in July 2024, he mentioned that the spinoff of The Big Bang Theory was still in the earliest stages of development. Eventually, cast members began signing on for the spinoff in October 2024, but details still remain scant. In February 2025, John Ross Bowie signed on to reprise his role as Barry Kripke, Sheldon and Leonard’s colleague from CalTech.
