Apologetic Sean O’Malley releases statement following UFC 316 submission loss: ‘We’ll be back’

It was a tough night at the office for Sean O’Malley, who lost his second fight to Merab Dvalishvili via third round submission (re-watch that here).

O’Malley completely turned around the way he was living in preparation for his title rematch against “The Machine,” giving up social media, clubbing weed, vaping and even, “j-ing the peen” in an attempt to live a life that would led him back to the Bantamweight belt.

Unfortunately, it’ll take more than sober living and anti-fap to solve the wrestling grind of Dvalishvili.

After some early success fending off takedown attempts, O’Malley spent nearly all of round three trapped under Merab. In the final 20 seconds of the round, Dvalishvili locked up a rare north-south choke — Merab called it the “Machine Choke” — forcing “Suga” to tap.

“Merab’s a motherf—er,” a clearly stunned and frustrated O’Malley told Joe Rogan after the defeat.

And then “Suga” went straight home to Arizona with no partying or anything. He posted a short video on his Instagram at 6:42 a.m. outside his house … and he was clearly still processing.

“All right fellas, we’re back home,” O’Malley said. “Appreciate you guys. Sorry we didn’t get the job done. We’ll be back. Love you guys.”

O’Malley was humble following the first loss to Dvalishvili, only to return to cocky form a few days later and declaring he should have won on the judges’ scorecards. There’s no way to spin this loss. Yes, Sean defended Merab’s takedowns well early on and got his fair share of shots in on the champion. But, Dvalishvili was never affected by anything and just kept shifting into higher gears as the fight went on.

Numerous mixed martial arts (MMA) fans are taking shots at O’Malley over the loss, but it’s the likely fate for any contender set to face Dvalishvili right now. We’ll see how all that clean living and peen denial pays off when “Suga” isn’t in there against the most dominant grapplers in the sport today.
