A new production update about an Apple TV+ science fiction masterpiece has been made. The Apple TV+ sci-fi show in question has an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 95% after two seasons, but its new update raises concerns surrounding its next installment.
With every new sci-fi addition to its catalog and renewal of existing shows of the genre, Apple TV+ is only cementing its reputation as the streaming home for some of the most ambitious and compelling science fiction series. Given how shows like Silo and Foundation are set to return to the streamer in 2026, and new ones like Neuromancer are about to join its line-up, Apple TV+ is expected to continue its sci-fi domination.
However, in all of these exciting updates about Apple TV+’s sci-fi future, there is a note of disappointment and concern. News surrounding one of the best sci-fi shows on the streamer suggests that it will continue a trend that previously weighed it down.
Ben Stiller’s Severance Season 3 Production Update Suggests The Show May Continue A Worrying Trend
In a recent episode of The Severance Podcast with Ben Stiller & Adam Scott, Ben Stiller revealed that Severance season 3 is currently being written and is still in pre-production. While it is good that the flywheels of the next installment’s production are moving forward, things seem to be a little on the slower end.
Apple TV+ sci-fi shows like Silo, so far, have had an incredible turnaround time. After premiering in 2023, Silo is already two seasons in, and its next installment is expected to come out in 2026. Since seasons 3 and 4 of Silo have reportedly been filmed back-to-back, season 4 will likely premiere in 2027 and mark the end of the series.
Severance, in contrast, landed on Apple TV+ in February 2022. Despite being a hit and earning almost unanimous acclaim, it did not return with season 2 until early 2025. The fact that Severance season 3 is still in pre-production makes it unlikely that it will be released on Apple TV+ before 2027.
The production update suggests that Severance will continue following its trend of leaving massive gaps between each season, which could significantly hurt its reputation. Although the show is a brilliant addition to the sci-fi genre, it risks diminishing audience interest with its slow turnaround time.
The Long Wait For Severance Season 3 Will Still Be Worth It
Given how Severance is one of the most complex and layered sci-fi shows on air right now and also heavily relies on attention to detail, it could end up in serious trouble if it makes audiences wait too long between seasons. Even if it maintains its storytelling quality with each new season, viewers would struggle to keep up with its narrative beats and might even lose the sense of continuity that makes it compelling.
Britt Lower and Tramell Tillman won their first Emmys at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards for their performances in Apple TV+’s Severance.
However, since Severance season 2 brilliantly managed to make up for the long gap after season 1, it is hard not to believe that season 3, too, will manage to achieve the same. If Severance season 3 manages to get an early 2027 release, there will only be a gap of two years between seasons 2 and 3, which is quite acceptable for a show with such a massive storytelling scale.
The Apple TV+ series will still have to find creative ways to help audiences recall everything that happened in the previous seasons before unfolding season 3 because a lot has unfolded in its story so far.
