Even in winter, there’s no place like the seaside and this pretty village is a must-visit. Located along the Scottish coast, it’s a beautiful place known for looking like a film set.
The village is home to cobbled streets and a peaceful atmosphere. Hello! Magazine has named Culross in Scotland as one of the top villages to visit in the UK in winter.
It says: “Famed for its remarkable preservation of the village’s 17th-century features, Culross is well known by locals and visitors for its rich history as a coal and salt trading port and its importance during the Scottish witch trials, where women were tried for witchcraft in what is now the square’s Town House.”
To explore the area, you will need as little as a day or even a night or two if you’re hoping to take a slower paced trip.
Scotland’s Stories says you can’t miss out on a trip to Culross Palace while you’re there.
It says: “The ochre-coloured Culross Palace is the town’s most eye-catching landmark and the perfect starting point.”
The building is a historic and notable part of the village which can be spotted by its bright yellow exterior – a focal point in the town. Inside, you can explore its charming tiny rooms, connecting passageways and painted ceilings.
Culross is often visited by fans of the hit US TV series Outlander which was filmed partly on the village’s streets.
“It’s little wonder that Culross is acknowledged as one of the most picturesque villages in Scotland – or that it’s so often used as a film and television location,” says National Trust for Scotland.
For walkers, Culross offers a great starting point for a coastal or woodland walk. From the village, you can take a stroll along footpaths towards the seaside.
You should head towards Valleyfield and if you’re looking to increase your walk, you can also add in Preston Island.
One new and popular route is the West Fife Woodlands Way which is a 10-mile marked route around west Fife starting and ending in Culross.
If you’re looking for a quaint place to visit for a quiet break, Culross could be the perfect spot for you this winter.
