Last year, we learned that Elden Ring, a popular third-person action role-playing game developed by FromSoftware, was being adapted into a movie by A24. Per Variety, another of FromSoftware’s hits — the gothic horror adventure Bloodborne — is getting the same treatment, this time from Sony Pictures. Unlike the Elden Ring movie, the Bloodborne film will be animated.
In Bloodborne, players take on the role of a Hunter who must make their way through the haunted city of Yharnam, battling many dangerous beasts along the way. Eventually, they discover more about what happened to the city, which involves ancient cosmic gods called Great Ones. At CinemaCon, Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group president Sanford Panitch promised that the Bloodborne movie will stay “very true” to the gory spirit of the game.
Like a lot of FromSoftware games, the story in Bloodborne is parceled out in item descriptions and bits of environmental context, which could make producing a narrative film based on it difficult. To that end, Sony will have help from the YouTuber Jacksepticeye (real name Seán McLoughlin), who often professes his love for Bloodborne and who has played it on his channel, which currently has over 31 million subscribers.
A ‘Bloodborne’ Movie Was Inevitable, and the Right Choice for Hollywood
A lot of trends are meeting with this movie. Years ago, video game adaptations were largely seen as groan-worthy cash grabs, with films like Street Fighter (1996), Bloodrayne (2005), and Far Cry (2008) teaming up to give the genre a bad reputation. But they’ve gotten much better over time, not to mention far more successful; The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is on its way to becoming the biggest hit of 2026, and that’s to say nothing of high-profile TV adaptations like Arcane and The Last of Us. Nowadays, the announcements of movie adaptations of prestigious games like Elden Ring and Bloodborne are greeted with excitement, not fear.
Jacksepticeye’s involvement is also interesting. It recalls the recent success of Iron Lung, a movie adaptation of an independent video game. The Iron Lung movie was written, directed, and starred the YouTuber Markiplier (Mark Edward Fischbach), who also became popular on YouTube making gaming content (he currently has over 38 million subscribers). Iron Lung was an independent production while the Bloodborne movie has Sony Pictures behind it, but both movies highlight the growing importance of home-grown influencers like Markiplier and Jacksepticeye on the entertainment industry.
There’s no release date set as of yet for the Bloodborne movie, nor do we know anything about the cast. While we wait, there are lots of new video game adaptations coming our way. The live-action Legend of Zelda movie, which is being distributed by Sony, is due out in theaters on May 7, 2027. Also, Prime Video recently revealed the first look at its upcoming God of War series, and HBO is working on a TV show that will continue the story from Baldur’s Gate 3.
