‘Miami Vice ’85’ Delayed to Summer 2028

Universal Pictures has shifted its release dates, delaying its previously announced Miami Vice reboot, Miami Vice ’85, to 2028.

Miami Vice ’85 is set to star Academy Award-winner Michael B. Jordan and Academy Award-nominee Austin Butler as Richard “Rico” Tubbs and James “Sunny” Crocket, respectively, in an adaptation of the hit television show. Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski will helm the film, with a screenplay by Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler) and Eric Warren Singer (Only the Brave).

Deadline reports that Miami Vice ’85 has been delayed from an Aug. 6, 2027, release date to May 19, 2028. It takes the release date originally reserved for The Mummy 4, which has since been bumped up to Oct. 15, 2027. Universal is still holding onto that aforementioned Aug. 6 release date for an Untitled Event film.

Miami Vice ’85 marks the second big-screen outing for the hit television series Miami Vice. In 2006, original series executive producer and pilot director Michael Mann helmed a feature film adaptation starring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx as Crockett and Tubbs, respectively. 2006’s Miami Vice set the story in the present day. While originally perceived as a box office and critical disappointment, it’s since gained a cult following. As suggested by the title, Miami Vice ’85 will return to the time period of the television series.

Miami Vice ’85 is just one of three high-profile adaptations of popular television shows that Universal Pictures is currently developing. Jamie Lee Curtis is set to star in Murder, She Wrote, which Universal also delayed from its Dec. 22, 2027, release date to Feb. 4, 2028, three months before Miami Vice ’85. Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald have been brought on to develop a feature-film reboot of Knight Rider, with no release date set.

Miami Vice ’85 taking the May 19, 2028 release date now puts it in the middle of the summer movie season. While no film is currently set to open the same weekend as Miami Vice ’85, May 2028 is already beginning to fill up. Miami Vice ’85 will open two weeks after an Untitled Marvel Movie that many suspect could be the MCU’s X-Men reboot. A week prior to that, Final Destination 7 will open on May 12. Then, a week after Miami Vice ’85 opens, Disney will release Lilo & Stitch 2 on May 26 before the Memorial Day weekend. It’s a gamble, but the star power of Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler, coupled with Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski at the helm, makes Miami Vice ’85 a movie to watch out for in the summer of 2028.
