Even the biggest isekai-haters can’t deny the success the genre has seen over the past decade. Over the past ten years, there might not be another genre quite as dominant as isekai, but 2026 has shown that its reign as one of the kings of anime might be coming to an end.
Isekai was a relatively niche genre until, almost out of nowhere, the opposite was closer to the truth. A decade ago, Sword Art Online showed the world just how good the genre could be, and it has only exploded since then.
Between 2015-2025, isekai’s rise has been incomparable. There are more isekai series than we can count, but that quantity might have been a bad thing for the genre, as fewer and fewer isekai series are able to see the dominance they once achieved.
Isekai Has Dominated Anime for Nearly a Decade
Isekai is easily one of the most popular anime genres across the globe. At its core, isekai is an incredibly straightforward genre. An isekai series features a single character or a cast of characters transported to a new world where they usually encounter magic, monsters, and everything in between. From there, the series can take free-reign as it approaches other interesting elements.
Series like Lord of Mysteries, one of the best isekai series of the modern day, take the isekai premise and run with it. Lord of Mysteries stars Klein Moretti as he explores his new world filled with mystery, gains absurd new powers, and becomes one of the strongest characters around.
Crunchyroll’s Best Isekai of 2025 Proves Japan Is in Big, Big Trouble
No other country has been able to replicate Japan’s success in anime, but this new Crunchyroll hit proves that Japan might not be king for long.
Series like Overlord do the opposite, taking the main plot points of a traditional isekai series and spinning them on their heads. While most isekai protagonists are brought to a new world and are tasked with saving it, Ainz Ooal Gown becomes the titular Overlord. He dominates the world he finds himself in, breathing life into the genre.
There are a ton of isekai series out there, and plenty of good picks in 2026. This year hasn’t been the best for isekai, however, and there’s been a massive resurgence in a lot of other genres, at least partly because of how bloated the isekai genre has become.
Fantasy Anime Is Stronger Than Ever
Out of every anime genre gaining momentum over the past decade, fantasy might be number one. There are a ton of great new series across the board, but the fantasy genre in particular might be home to some of the greatest anime series of all time, hands down.
Witch Hat Atelier, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, and Delicious in Dungeon are three series that comprise the “Big Three” of fantasy anime. Each brings something new to the table, reinvigorating the genre and acting as three separate culminations of everything that the genre has worked to achieve over the past few years.
Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End is unquestionably one of the best to ever do it, and there’s a good argument to be made that it is, in fact, the single greatest anime series ever made. Watching Frieren feels like drinking a cold glass of water on a hot day. It’s refreshing, calming, and exciting all at once, and there really isn’t a good series that can call itself its equal.
Witch Hat Atelier and Delicious in Dungeon are two great franchises in their own right. They both have monstrously good animation sequences, amazingly lovable characters, and reliable premises that only get better the longer the series runs. While great fantasy franchises have certainly swayed the tide of popularity, bad isekai series haven’t made it any easier for the genre.
There Are Too Many Bad Isekai Series
Isekai’s overwhelming success inevitably became its downfall. Because isekai is so popular, scores of isekai series were animated. To a lot of production companies, isekai seemed like a winning formula. It’s a formula that is so simple it’s easy to see why a company would want to rely on it, as it only takes a person reincarnating into a magical world to get the ball rolling.
Unfortunately, it’s this basic nature that brought isekai down as a whole. Too many below-average series were produced, and fans grew tired of what isekai came to represent. What was once a genre that encapsulated joy, wonder, and amazement became home to stale, overdone premises and characters that lacked any originality whatsoever.
Prediction: Isekai Will Lose Its Crown in 2027
Isekai is losing a lot of momentum in 2026, and it won’t get better in 2027. There are a handful of amazing isekai series that are still in production, like The Saga of Tanya the Evil and The Eminence in Shadow, but these will be the outliers. For the most part, isekai as a whole will see a major dip in popularity for the first time since its rise to fame.
This isn’t necessarily a bad thing — isekai’s ebb of popularity will give stronger series a chance to shine while it will thin weaker series out simultaneously. Series like Overlord and Re:Zero will still be popular, as they’re some of the strongest anime around, regardless of genre, but weaker series that rely on the isekai premise too much won’t last.
Isekai has become one of the most entertaining realms of anime over the past decade, and while we’re sad to see it lose its edge, we’re more than happy to check out what’s next for both the genre and the medium as a whole.
