A beloved UK seaside pier has been crowned the best in the country. Travellers may find themselves inclined to make the most of the sun at home this year, with the Bank Holiday weekend set to bring about warmer than usual weather. Those who decide to make holiday plans in the UK or take advantage of the warmer weather are spoilt for choice.
One pier may stand out above all though as the Pier of the Year awarded location has a rich history worth exploring. Given out annually by the National Piers Society, founded by Sir John Betjeman, the Pier of the Year award has been handed to a pier less than two hours from London by train.
The pier was cut in half during World War 2 but now, after a £2million refurbishment, the historic Great Yarmouth spot is back in top form and has received rave reviews from those visiting.
One person took to TripAdvisor and described the pier as a must-go attraction. They wrote: “The staff were incredibly friendly, welcoming and helpful throughout our stay.
“The place itself is stunning, really fresh, modern and well looked after. The quality of everything stood out, from the pool tables and darts facilities to the new gaming machines. There was also karaoke in the PierTavern which created such a brilliant atmosphere when we visited.
“In the two days we were staying nearby, we ended up visiting around six times because it quickly became our go to place. Great vibe, great people and a really decent venue all round.”
Another person hailed the pier and area around it but did note how crowded it could be. They wrote: “Gets very busy with many amusement arcade slot machines with direct access down a few steps on the beautiful golden sandy beach of Great Yarmouth. Well worth a stroll around the Pier for the lovely views of the sea and beach.”
The amusements were also singled out by pier attendees, who say it is a perfect day out for the family.
The person wrote: “Enjoyed the pier amusements with grandchildren. There’s plenty of affordable 2p machines which do give out prizes and the attendant even gave us some ‘lucky’ 2ps very happy kids thank you.”
